Chapter I- Introduction

A. Background of the Study

Water is one of the most important substances on earth. All plants and animals

must have water to survive. If there was no water there would be no life on earth. Apart

from drinking it to survive, people have many other uses for water. These include

cooking, washing their bodies, washing clothes, washing cooking utensils, keeping

houses and communities clean, recreation, keeping plants alive.Water is also essential

for the healthy growth of farm crops and farm stock and is used in the manufacture of

many products.

It is most important that the water which people drink and use for other

purposes is clean water. This means that the water must be free of germs and chemicals

and be clear (not cloudy). Disease-causing germs and chemicals can find their way into

water supplies. When this happens the water becomes polluted or contaminated and

when people drink it or come in contact with it in other ways they can become very sick.

Throughout history there have been many occasions when hundreds of thousands of

people have died because disease-causing germs have been spread through a

community by a polluted water supply. Water supplies are routinely checked for germs

and chemicals which can pollute water. If the water is not safe to drink it is treated. All

the action taken to make sure that drinking water is potable is called water

treatment. But with our study, we can purify and clean water with the use of charcoal.

Activated charcoal traps impurities in water including solvents, pesticides,

industrial waste and other chemicals. This is why its used in water filtration systems

1
throughout the world. However, it doesnt trap viruses, bacteria and hard-water

minerals. According to a study published in the Journal of the Canadian Dental

Association, activated carbon filters (activated charcoal), removes some fluoride.

Avoiding fluoride and detoxing from it is important for oral health, proper immune

system functioning, and healthy kidneys and liver. Drinking water is essential to good

health; however, typical tap water is toxic and laden with chemicals, toxins and

fluoride. Ingestion should be limited whenever possible.

B. Statement of the Problem

Here in the Philippines, people and children drink from their taps and faucets.

We cannot ensure how safe these waters are. We have water stations and water

gallons for a reason so there isnt a need for drinking tap waters. But in some dire

situations, people result to drinking tap water instead. We have come up with a

solution to this problem by proposing the homemade charcoal filter. This study is

already proven and we are here to identify the process of purifying unclean tap

water with the use of charcoal. With this filtration system, you can easily make one

in your own home, is proven to be safe, and has no side effects to humans.

Therefore, the homemade charcoal filter can be made and used without worries.

C. Hypothesis

If charcoal filter is used with filtering dirty and impure water, then the outcome

would be clean and potable water.

D. Objectives

2
Generally, our study aims to know the process of how the water is purified

through the use of a homemade charcoal purifier.

1. To know how the water gets purified by the charcoal filter.

2. To make clean drinking water with the use of the charcoal filter.

3. To successfully complete this experiment without complications.

E. Significance of the Study

This study helps the Filipino people have clean and impure drinking water when

they run out of water gallons or unable to purchase them. A filtration system that is easy

to make and use at home with no harmless chemicals used and is proven to have no side

effects to humans. This would also help those people who are in dire need of clean

water in their homes. The used charcoals from camp fires and grills can also be reused

for this experiment.

F. Scope and Limitation

In our investigatory project, instead of proving that purification of water

through a homemade charcoal is possible, we aim to focus on the process of

purifying water itself and how the process works. We had some difficulties in

making the investigation for we were having a hard time in gathering information

and to divide our time as we were also lacking in knowledge in making the project.

Chapter III- Methodology

A. Materials

The materials used in this project are the following: one liter plastic bottle,

gravel, activated charcoal, clean sand, dirt, and tap water.

B. Experimental Design

C. Procedures

Through the use of these materials of ours, we had to crush our charcoal into

small bits for it to be able to fit in our plastic bottle. Since we are in need of a

container, we used the plastic bottle of ours and made a it into a more cylindrical

container with open ends. We then filled the small opening of the bottle with a

piece of fabric to prevent the charcoal from falling out or letting the water run

through. We continued to
