Selfsuggestion

Couidentifiedtwotypesofselfsuggestion:(i)theintentional,"reflectivesuggestion"madebydeliberateand
consciouseffort,and(ii)theinvoluntary"spontaneoussuggestion",thatisanaturalphenomenonofourmental
lifewhichtakesplacewithoutconsciouseffort[andhasitseffect]withanintensityproportionaltothekeenness
of[our]attention(Baudouin,1920,pp.3334).Baudouinidentifiedthreedifferentsourcesofspontaneous
suggestion:

A.Instancesbelongingtotherepresentativedomain(sensations,mentalimages,dreams,visions,
memories,opinions,andallintellectualphenomena)
B.Instancesbelongingtotheaffectivedomain(joyorsorrow,emotions,sentiments,tendencies,
passions)
C.Instancesbelongingtotheactiveormotordomain(actions,volitions,desires,gestures,movements
attheperipheryorintheinteriorofthebody,functionalororganicmodifications).[18]

Twominds

AccordingtoYeates(2016b,p.42),CousharedthetheoreticalpositionthatHudsonhadexpressedinhisLawof
PsychicPhenomena(1893):namely,thatour"mentalorganization"wassuchthatitseemedasifwehad"two
minds,eachendowedwithseparateanddistinctattributesandpowers[with]eachcapable,undercertain
conditions,ofindependentaction"(p.25).

Further,arguedHudson,itwasentirelyirrelevant,forexplanatorypurposes,whetherweactuallyhad"twodistinct
minds",whetherweonlyseemedtobeendowedwithadualmentalorganization,orwhetherweactuallyhad
onemind[possessedof]certainattributesandpowersundersomeconditions,andcertainotherattributesand

Underlyingprinciples

Couthusdevelopedamethodwhichreliedontheprinciplethatanyideaexclusivelyoccupyingthemindturns
intoreality,althoughonlytotheextentthattheideaiswithintherealmofpossibility.Forinstance,aperson

"Icanrememberclearly").

Willpower

Couobservedthatthemainobstacletoautosuggestionwaswillpower.Forthemethodtowork,thepatientmust
refrainfrommakinganyindependentjudgment,meaningthathemustnotlethiswillimposeitsownviewson
positiveideas.Everythingmustthusbedonetoensurethatthepositive"autosuggestive"ideaisconsciously

obscured.However,ifthisnegativethoughtisreplacedwithamorepositiveone("Noneedtoworry,itwillcome

Counotedthatyoungchildrenalwaysappliedhismethodperfectly,astheylackedthewillpowerthatremained
presentamongadults.Whenheinstructedachildbysaying"claspyourhandsandyoucan'topenthem",thechild
wouldthusimmediatelyfollow.

Selfconflict

Apatient'sproblemsarelikelytoincreasewhenhiswillpowerandimagination(ormentalideas)areopposingeach
other,somethingCouwouldrefertoas"selfconflict".Inthestudent'scase,thewilltosucceedisclearly
incompatiblewithhisthoughtofbeingincapableofrememberinghisanswers.Astheconflictintensifies,sodoes
theproblem:themorethepatienttriestosleep,themorehebecomesawake.Themoreapatienttriestostop
smoking,themorehesmokes.Thepatientmustthusabandonhiswillpowerandinsteadputmorefocusonhis
imaginativepowerinordertosucceedfullywithhiscure.

Effectiveness

Thankstohismethod,whichCouoncecalledhis"trick",[21]patientsofallsortswouldcometovisithim.Thelist
ofailmentsincludedkidneyproblems,diabetes,memoryloss,stammering,weakness,atrophyandallsortsof
physicalandmentalillnesses.Accordingtooneofhisjournalentries(1916),heapparentlycuredapatientofa

thosewhorefusedtorecognizeit.

Medicinesandautosuggestion

Theuseofautosuggestionisintendedtocomplementuseofmedicine,butnomedicationofCou'stimecouldsave
apatientfromdepressionortension.Courecommendedthatpatientstakemedicineswiththeconfidencethatthey
wouldbecompletelycuredverysoon,andhealingwouldbeoptimal.Conversely,hecontended,patientswhoare
