EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The project attempts to give an idea about the various Individual Social responsibilities (ISR)
and awareness about the requirement of how we as individuals can perform our social
responsibility. The social cause on which I have worked on in this project is child education.

A brief insight is given on NGO SAI DHAM, working on children education. The aim of SAI
DHAM is to provide child good education so that they could have a normal living and be
included in the society. The same is the subject of the project. Finally an attempt is made to
capture the doing of SaiDham in a video, highlighting their work.

INTRODUCTION
Social responsibility is an ethical framework and suggests that an entity, be it an organization or
individual, has an obligation to act for the benefit of society at large. Social responsibility is a
duty every individual has to perform so as to maintain a balance between the economy and the
ecosystems. A trade-off may exist between economic development, in the material sense, and the
welfare of the society and environment, though this has been challenged by many reports over
the past decade. Social responsibility means sustaining the equilibrium between the two. It
pertains not only to business organizations but also to everyone whose any action impacts the
environment. This responsibility can be passive, by avoiding engaging in socially harmful acts,
or active, by performing activities that directly advance social goals.

Businesses can use ethical decision making to secure their businesses by making decisions that
allow for government agencies to minimize their involvement with the corporation. For instance
if a company follows the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines for
emissions on dangerous pollutants and even goes an extra step to get involved in the community
and address those concerns that the public might have; they would be less likely to have the EPA
investigate them for environmental concerns "A significant element of current thinking about
privacy, however, stresses "self-regulation" rather than market or government mechanisms for
protecting personal information". According to some experts, most rules and regulations are
formed due to public outcry, which threatens profit maximization and therefore the well-being of
the shareholder, and that if there is not outcry there often will be limited regulation.

Some critics argue that corporate social responsibility (CSR) distracts from the fundamental
economic role of businesses; others argue that it is nothing more than superficial window-
dressing, or "greenwashing" others argue that it is an attempt to pre-empt the role of
governments as a watchdog over powerful corporations though there is no systematic evidence to
support these criticisms. A significant number of studies have shown no negative influence on
shareholder results from CSR but rather a slightly negative correlation with improved
shareholder returns

Student social responsibility

Student social responsibility is the responsibility of every student for their actions. It is morally
binding, and suggests that each individual act in such a way that minimizes the adverse effect on
those immediately around them.

Corporate social responsibility

Corporate social responsibility or CSR has been defined by Lord Holme and Richard Watts in
the World Business Council for Sustainable Development's publication "Making Good Business
Sense" as "the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to
economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as
well as the local community and society at large." CSR is one of the newest management
strategies where companies try to create a positive impact on society while doing business.
Evidence suggests that CSR taken on voluntarily by companies will be much more effective than
CSR mandated by governments. There is no clear-cut definition of what CSR comprises. Every
company has different CSR objectives though the main motive is the same. All companies have a
two-point agendato improve qualitatively (the management of people and processes) and
quantitatively (the impact on society). The second is as important as the first and stake holders of
every company are increasingly taking an interest in "the outer circle"-the activities of the

7
company and how these are impacting the environment and society. The other motive behind this
is that the companies should not be focused only on maximization of profits.

While many corporations include social responsibility in their operations, it is still important for
those procuring the goods and services to ensure the products are socially sustainable.
Verification tools are available from a multitude of entities internationally, such as the
Underwriters Laboratories environmental standards, BIFMA, Bio Preferred, and Green Seal.
These resources help corporations and their consumers identify potential risks associated with a
product's lifecycle and enable end users to confirm the corporation's practices adhere to social
responsibility ideals.

Scientists and engineers

One common view is that scientists and engineers are morally responsible for the negative
consequences which result from the various applications of their knowledge and inventions
.After all, if scientists and engineers take personal pride in the many positive achievements of
science and technology, why should they be allowed to escape responsibility for the negative
consequences related to the use or abuse of scientific knowledge and technological innovations?
Furthermore, scientists and engineers have a collective responsibility for the choice and conduct
of their work. Committees of scientists and engineers are often involved in the planning of
governmental and corporate research programs, including those devoted to the development of

8
military technologies and weaponry .Many professional societies and national organizations,
such as the National Academy of Science and the National Academy of Engineering in the
United States, have ethical guidelines (see Engineering ethics and Research ethics for the
conduct of scientific research and engineering)Clearly, there is recognition that scientists and
engineers, both individually and collectively, have a special and much greater responsibility than
average citizens with respect to the generation and use of scientific knowledge.

Unfortunately, it has been pointed out that the situation is not that simple and scientists and
engineers should not be blamed for all the evils created by new scientific knowledge and
technological innovations. First, there is the common problem of fragmentation and diffusion of
responsibility. Because of the intellectual and physical division of labor, the resulting
fragmentation of knowledge, the high degree of specialization, and the complex and hierarchical
decision-making process within corporations and government research laboratories, it is
exceedingly difficult for individual scientists and engineers to control the applications of their
innovations. This fragmentation of both work and decision-making results in fragmented moral
accountability, often to the point where "everybody involved was responsible but none could be
held responsible."

Another problem is ignorance. The scientists and engineers cannot predict how their newly
generated knowledge and technological innovations may be abused or misused for destructive
purposes in the near or distant future. While the excuse of ignorance is somewhat acceptable for
those scientists involved in very basic and fundamental research where potential applications
cannot be even envisioned, the excuse of ignorance is much weaker for scientists and engineers
involved in applied scientific research and technological innovation since the work objectives are
well known. For example, most corporations conduct research on specific products or services
that promise to yield the greatest possible profit for share-holders. Similarly, most of the research
funded by governments is mission-oriented, such as protecting the environment, developing new
drugs, or designing more lethal weapons. In all cases where the application of scientific
knowledge and technological innovation is well known a priori, it is impossible for a scientist or
engineer to escape responsibility for research and technological innovation that is morally

9
dubious .As John Forge writes in Moral Responsibility and the Ignorant Scientist: "Ignorance is
not an excuse precisely because scientists can be blamed for being ignorant."

Another point of view is that responsibility falls on those who provide the funding for the
research and technological developments, which in most cases are corporations and government
agencies. Furthermore, because taxpayers provide indirectly the funds for government-sponsored
research, they and the politicians that represent them, i.e., society at large, should be held
accountable for the uses and abuses of science. Compared to earlier times when scientists could
often conduct their own research independently, today's experimental research requires
expensive laboratories and instrumentation, making scientists dependent on those who pay for
their studies.

Quasi-legal instruments, or soft law principle has received some normative status in relation to
private and public corporations in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights developed by
the UNESCO International Bioethics Committee particularly in relation to child and maternal
welfare (Faunce and Nasu 2009) The International Organization for Standardization will
"encourage voluntary commitment to social responsibility and will lead to common guidance on
concepts, definitions and methods of evaluation.

PUBLIC SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY BILL:

Deduction From Salary And Profits/Turnover

Voluntarily To Be Practiced By Citizens Of India

The latest reports from various world organizations, researchers from India, states that there are
millions in India, in very poor living conditions. Also millions are not getting one full meal per
day, the millions dont have access to toilets, drinking water, schools, health, basic shelters,
hundreds died in Delhi because of extreme cold. But the good thing is some way thousands of
NGOs are helping the poor, needy in various ways.

10
On the other hand we have seen that some percentage of Indians, which includes central
government employees, state government employees, banks, financial institutions, mncs, etc.
Whose pay is being raised by huge percentage, corporate, businessmen are also making huge
money which is evident by such demand for apple i-phone, cities being flooded with luxury cars,
more gold sale, people buying houses costing more than 2 crores, very high luxury lifestyles, etc.
We are seeing how lakhs and crores are being spent in parties, marriages, etc.

The need of the hour is to involve heart, soul, mind of all those middle income, upper income,
rich people to work for the upliftment of the down trodden. Many of the fellow Indians want to
help and do charity but they are unaware and to whom to help, how to help. We can do it directly
through the thousands of NGOs, Trusts helping the humanity. Charity and Sharing is the greatest
good work which we can do, it will broaden our mind, increase our merit. An American Bill
Gates is a classic example of his high charitable mindset.

In India we have thousands of NGOs who are doing very great work for humanity ecology rural
development, orphans, etc. They are running because of donations and charity they receive from
the public, more amount if they get they can expand there activities, cover more people, areas
and provide a parallel development model and help the State and Central Government.

All salaried people in government, public, private whose total pay allowance is more than
`10,000.00 per month, henceforth they will have to pay minimum 1% to maximum their choice
% PSR fund contribution from their monthly salary, which will be deducted by the company. A
list of very good and noble organizations involved in various welfare schemes will be listed and
employees as per their choice can donate the money to their choice welfare organization.
Directly through online transfer from the company bank account the amount will go to the bank
account of the philanthropic organization. Hundreds of good organizations are doing very sound
social service, infact India is more stabilized and peaceful because of service of such great NGOs
who are doing great service to the needy, to boost their good work, they need further resources
and financial contribution which will come through this contribution by the public. The great

11
saints of all nations have said very high about charity and sharing, its immense benefit to the one
who give charity.

Option given to big companies with their own foundations like Infosys, Wipro and others having
their own CSR organizations giving choice to their employees to contribute the same to their
respective foundations. Government of India set up an committee of legal, financial and other
experts who will in-depth study the NGOs and give them a okay certificate, only then they can
be incorporated by organizations, this is a must to ensure and see fly by night NGOs dont crop
up to grab hard earned money and run away.

Like The TDS, Income Tax and other deductions this Public Social Responsibility Charity
introduced and money transferred directly to NGOs. Hope the citizens of Mother India known
for their broadmindedness positively contribute to this scheme and thus help the poor have a
better life. The Government of India alone cannot take care of all people, the NGOs are doing
very great work, and they need the support of the common man.

The citizens pay all kinds of taxes, buy shares, insurance, NSC, etc. just 1% of their
salary/earnings, if they contribute the NGOs can expand the work and give better life to the
millions of humans and also the flora, fauna.

EXAMPLES OF SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Social responsibility is a form of self-regulation that businesses adopt as a part of their corporate
conscience and citizenship. Often referred to as corporate social responsibility or CSR, this
policy spurs businesses to develop means to monitor the publics social perception of them as a
responsible business. The business goal of social responsibility is to encourage the companys
actions toward the positive impact of consumer, community and employee responsibility.
12
Voluntary Hazard Elimination

Companies involved with social responsibility often take action to voluntarily eliminate
production practices that could cause harm for the public, regardless of whether they are required
by law. For example, a business could institute a hazard control program that includes steps to
protect the public from exposure to hazardous substances through education and awareness. A
plant that uses chemicals could implement a safety inspection checklist to guide staff in best
practices when handling potentially dangerous substances and materials. A business that makes
excessive noise and vibration could analyze the effects its work has on the environment by
surveying local residents. The information received could be used to adjust activities and develop
soundproofing to lessen public exposure to noise pollution.

Community Development

Companies, businesses and corporations concerned with social responsibility align with
appropriate institutions to create a better environment to live and work. For example, a
corporation or business may set up a foundation to assist in learning or education for the public.
This action will be viewed as an asset to all of the communities that it serves, while developing a
positive public profile.

Philanthropy

Businesses involved in philanthropy make monetary contributions that provide aid to local
charitable, educational and health-related organizations to assist under-served or impoverished
communities. This action can assist people in acquiring marketable skills to reduce poverty,
provide education and help the environment. For example, the Bill and Melinda Gates
Foundation focuses on global initiatives for education, agriculture and health issues, donating
computers to schools and funding work on vaccines to prevent polio and HIV/AIDS.

Creating Shared Value

Corporate responsibility interests are often referred to as creating shared value or CSV, which is
based upon the connection between corporate success and social well-being. Since a business
13
needs a productive workforce to function, health and education are key components to that
equation. Profitable and successful businesses must thrive so that society may develop and
survive. An example of how CSV works could be a company-sponsored contest involving a
project to improve the management and access of water used by a farming community, to foster
public health.

Social Education and Awareness

Companies that engage in socially responsible investing use positioning to exert pressure on
businesses to adopt socially responsible behavior themselves. To do this, they use media and
Internet distribution to expose the potentially harmful activities of organizations. This creates an
educational dialogue for the public by developing social community awareness. This kind of
collective activism can be affective in reaching social education and awareness goals. Integrating
a social awareness strategy into the business model can also aid companies in monitoring active
compliance with ethical business standards and applicable laws.

14
The Importance of Social Responsibility

Although the activity of social responsibility is benefit for both social and business
organizational, the arguments for and against business social responsibility exist. There are
several reasons of agreement of the activity. The importance of social responsibility is state
below: -

1) Best Interest of Business to Promote and Improve the Communities

Organizations, as members of society, have a moral obligation to help society deal with its
problems and to contribute to its welfare. It is the ethical thing to do by the business
organizations. A measurement should be made of whether the organization is performing such
activities as producing goods and services that people need, creating jobs for society, paying fair
wages, and ensuring worker safety.

People and organizations need each other. Social responsibility to employees extend beyond
terms and conditions of the formal contract of employment and give recognition to the workers
as a human being. People today have wider expectations of the quality of working life, included
justice is treatment, opportunities for consultation and participation, training in new skill and
technologies, effective personal and industrial relations policies, and provision of social and
leisure facilities. Organization should be, for example, give due consideration to the design of
work organization and job satisfaction, make very reasonable effort to give security of
employment, and provide employment opportunities for minority groups.

A number of leading companies have taken steps to develop more ethical cultures and system by
involving individual employees in corporate affairs. To provide or support some benefits to the
workers will lead to a good communities in the business organizations. Good communication in
the internal business would be leads to avoid miss understanding of each other. The workers
15
would then enjoy their work and work out more efficiency. The quality of goods and services of
the organization therefore increase. This will lead to profitable to the organization's business.
Therefore, the social responsibility is important in internal environment of the business too.

2 )Improves Public Image of the Firm

To many people, responsibilities to consumers may be seen as no more than a natural outcome of
good business. There are, however, broader social responsibilities including providing good
value for money; the safety and durability of products or services; standard of after-sales service;
prompt and courteous attention to queries and complaints; long-term satisfaction, for example
serviceability, adequate supply of products or services, and spare and replacement parts; fair
standards of advertising and trading; full and unambiguous information to potential customers.
Increasing concern for social responsibilities to consumers can be seen by the activities of such
bodies as the Consumers Association, and the number of television and radio programmed
devoted to this subject.

As an example of degrading the quality of life, some people believe that cigarette companies,
because they produce goods that can harm the health of society overall, are socially
irresponsible. By doing that, the consumers would be loses of confidence on the organization's
products, and not buying their products. Then consumers will buy the goods from other
organizations that they are confidence to. Social initiatives taken by organizations tend to
promote goodwill, public favor, and corporate trust, and these may contribute to the long-run
success of the organizations and profit. Therefore, socially responsible would acts enhance an
organization's image and business in general.

Actually watch the aperture is a actual accepted thing, do not rolex replica anguish too much.
Just accessible the lid is not too good. Because the accessible awning is a tool, this is as well
about simple Single, abstruse point is if abbreviating the rear cover, to accept a assertive bulk of

analysis the waterproof, this is A accepted operating procedure. If these two are dealt with, the
16
accessible rolex replica awning is no problem. For archetype is agnate to the woman's hymen,
There is no problem, except for cerebral problems.

3) Improving Stock Price

To having the action of social responsibility of an organization would lead to their suppliers, and
business associates more confidence to the organization. The examples of social responsibility
might include: fair standards of trading, honoring terns and conditions of purchase or sale, and
settlement dates, for example payment of accounts, assistance to smaller organization;
engagement only in fair competition; respect for copyright and patents. By doing that, the other
organizations would view the company as less risky. This is in the stockholders best interest. It
will improve the price of stock in the long run because the stock market will views the company
as less risky and open to public attack. So, it would reduce the cost of the production of the
company. Therefore award it a high price-earnings ratio.

Some organizations extend the range of social responsibilities even future by, for example:
giving recognition to the needs of developing countries; limiting the extent of political
involvement or campaigning; donations to, or sponsorship of, the arts, educational or educational
or research institutions, sporting organizations or charities.

4) Solving Social Problems

Organizations have a responsibility not to misuse the scarce factors of production upon which the
wealth of the country depends. Organizations have a responsibility to society, to respect
environmental considerations and take care of amenities. For example, the effects and potential
dangers of pollution, noise, disposal of waste; the silting and appearance of new buildings;
transportation policies, such as the routing of heavy vehicles through narrow village roads; and
avoidance of excessive packaging and more use of biodegradable materials. All of that must be
think off since the decision making of the organizations to have their process of production. For

17
example, is the protest against aerosol sprays containing chloral fluorocarbons. These have been
blamed for damaging the ozone layer, which protects the earth from harmful ultraviolet rays
from sun. Organizations should, of course, respect and obey the law which is set up of
government even where they regard it as not in their best interests. But what is debatable is the
extent to which organizations should co-operate voluntarily with actions requested by the
government. Some examples are: restraint from trading with certain overseas countries, and the
acceptance of controls over imports or exports; actions designed to combat inflation.

By the side, some pollutions cannot be avoid, and sometime, our government is too busy to solve
the others problems, society should give business a chance to solve social problems, such as air
pollution and water pollution, that government has failed to solve. To solving those social
problems, the environment will be cleaner. This would lead to a good image of the companies to
their consumers or other companies. The confidence of consumer's increases, and favor to buy
the goods from the companies. The profit of the companies will increase eventually. Therefore,
acts of social responsibility is very important by organizations help correct the social problems
that the organizations create.

5) Resource given by the organizations to solve the social problem

The measurement of social investment deals with the degree to which the organization is
investing both money and human resources to solve community social problems. Here, the
organization could be involved in assisting community organizations dedicated to education,
charities, and the arts.

For example, Ben and Jerry's have a great reputation for being a socially responsible company.
Management seems to include social responsibility issues in everything that it does. As an
example, when recently looking for a site to build its new factory, the company was torn between
building a new factory in its native Vermont to support struggling farmers or closer to the West
Coast to avoid the pollution caused and energy expended by transporting the ice cream a couple
of thousand miles. The Vermont site was eventually chosen.

18
A lot of money would be used for solving the social problems. Most of the time, there is limited
money for that. Technical also been used to solving problems. So, in order to avoid the limited of
resources, most of the organizations will possess the resources (such as money and expertise)
needed to tackle social problems. A good image of the companies develops. It will lead to even
more consumers to have confidence on those companies and more consume on the goods of the
companies. These companies would be profitable in the long run period. Therefore, being social
responsibilities is very important to an organization in order to create a good image to the
company.

26
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

1.Child Education

Provide children living in slums and slum like conditions with an environment that is conducive
to expressing their true potential and making them rise above the limitations inherent in their
situation, so they can leap forth into bright future. And to provide complete education with food,
clothing, study material and health care to them.

With the objective of providing free education, Shirdi Sai Baba School has been running
successfully under the able guidance of Sh. Motilala Gupta.

Free Child Education

Touched by the plight of poor rural children from neighboring clusters, loitering aimlessly
around our campus, it occurred to us that these children needed an opportunity to be educated
along with some incentives to motivate them to do so. We, therefore, in April 2004, established

27
Shirdi Sai Baba School for providing free education with breakfast, mid-day meal, uniform,
study material and health care to these children. The efforts to motivate bore fruit and the
number of children has since risen to more than 1050, out of which over 40% are girls. It is
desired that large number of girls are brought forward to the field of education to achieve women
empowerment.

Means and methodology adopted in achieving the objective of motivating the kids

Initially when the school was started, absenteeism was very high and even the parents were
reluctant to send their wards to the school, instead expecting their wards to work and add to the
family income. This hurdle was overcome by employing a novel method of motivating the
parents by extending material help to the family by providing clothing, LIC cover, facilitating
marriage of their daughters, medical care, adult education and taking them on excursion tours
along with the children.

High Quality Computer Education

To make education of these children compatible with the modern technology, we liaised with Dr.
Nilima Sabharwal, founder & CEO of the Home of Hope Inc., a USA based non-profit
organization which provided new technology based computer lab consisting of 24 computers and
coaching through the famous NIIT Foundation, New Delhi for the overall development of these
children. Lately one computer lab has been added courtesy the Rotary Clubs of Faridabad.

Edu-Comp Smart Classes

For bringing a successful transformation to Digital Technology we have introduced Edu-Comp

Smart Classes where teachers now use videos, animations, live images and captivating graphics
while teaching subjects such as Math, Science, Social Studies and English right inside their
classrooms turning the learning more interesting and effective for students.

Educational & Recreation Tours

To motivate further a program of taking these children on educational and sightseeing tours from
time to time to Ranthambhore, Sariska, Agra, Mathura, Bharatpur, Vrindaban, Mughal Gardens,
Akshardham and other places in and around Delhi was introduced to provide them recreation and
to enrich knowledge at institutions expense.

Changes brought in

It has been observed that Nutritious food and regular health care have not only brought healthy
glow and cheer on the faces of these children but also brought in great improvement in the
interest that these children are now showing in their studies and in the regularity of attending the
school.

Other Facilities

A well furnished library, excellent chemistry and physics labs, meditation, cultural activities and
indoor/ outdoor Sports facilities are also provided to the students.

2.Vocational Training

To provide an opportunity to young girls hailing from under-privileged segment of the society
the institution is imparting free training in the trades of tailoring on industrial sewing machines
and arranging their placements in export houses

India suffers from a high unemployment rate, especially among young people. The International
Labour Organization estimated that unemployment among young people between the age of 15
and 24 is up to twice as high as among the general population. The young from the villages/
slums, who urgently need employment and opportunities to raise their income, for them
vocational training is an option to increase the chances of getting a job. Vocational training
serves as a valuable tool in reducing the mismatch between demand and supply, which is quite
noticeable today.

Sai Dham provides Vocational Training to the poor and under-privileged out of the realization,
that majority of these students cannot pursue a long academic career for various reasons. There
was, therefore, a great need to equip boys and girls in the slums and resettlement colonies, to
earn their livelihood.

Tailoring

To provide an opportunity to girls/women, hailing from under-privileged segment of the society,

the institution is imparting free training in the trade of tailoring on industrial sewing machines
and within 3 months of training arrange placements of the trainees in export houses at a monthly
salary of Rs. 5,000/- per month with ESI & PF benefits and free crche facilities for a child who
is below one year of age.

Computers

To make education compatible with the modern technology, in the year 2009, we decided to
introduce high quality computer education. In our attempt we successfully liaised with Dr.
31
Nilima Sabharwal, founder & CEO of the Home of Hope Inc a USA based non-profit
organization to provide new technology based computer lab consisting of 24 computers and
coaching through the famous NIIT Foundation, New Delhi for the overall development of these
children. Now one computer lab has been added courtesy the Rotary Clubs of Faridabad (India).
In the afternoon the labs have been opened for free training to young boys and girls.

3.Mass Marriages

To mitigate hardship poor people face in arranging funds for marriage of their daughters, Sai
Dham organizes mass marriages of poor girls four times in a year, irrespective of caste and creed
and without any expenditure to their parents. Besides rituals, breakfast and lunch, the couples are
given numerous items of daily use as gift, at the time of Bidai.

32
To mitigate hardship of poor parents, mass marriage of about 25 girls is performed four times in
a year i.e. about 100 marriages per year, irrespective of caste and creed and without any
expenditure to their parents.

This is being primarily done to solve the difficulties, poor people face in arranging funds for
marriage of their daughters for which often they are forced to borrow few thousands on interest
even at 5% per month. What to talk of principal many a times they are unable to repay the
interest throughout their lives.

After the girls parents have fixed the bridegroom, they are to approach us to register their request
for marrying their daughters on our subsequent mass marriage function.

On the scheduled marriage day, the bride and bride groom parties reach our place i.e. Sai Dham
at about 10.00 AM whence breakfast is served to them. Thereafter brides are given hairdo and
facial treatment by our volunteers and taken to the main hall where Jai Mala- a ritual is
performed followed by other rituals and Pheras conducted with recitation of hymns (Mantras) by
a couple of priests.

More than two thousand persons partake in each such function which includes brides and
bridegrooms friends and relations, Sai devotees and distinguished guests. The couples are given
numerous household items of daily use, including a cycle- a mode of transport, as gift at the time
of Bidai (departure).

This humanitarian service is being acclaimed by one and all and is performed with the support of
many dedicated philanthropists.

33
The Evils of Dowry

The dowry system in India has ancient roots. It was started for the purpose of achieving the noble
intention of providing a share in the family wealth to the girl child who was to be given away in
marriage to another family. The women in that era enjoyed a special position and were highly
respected in the Hindu Society.

Gradually with the advent of outer influences, this system took an ugly turn and today the dowry
system has become the bane of our society, so much so, that many a times the pregnancy is got
terminated when it is found that the child in the womb is a girl. As a result, the percentage of
women as compared to men in India is 80 to 85%. The main reason for this aversion towards the
female child is the incapacity of the parents in meeting the huge expenditure involved in
performing marriages of their daughters.

34
In most of the cases, parents are forced to spend huge amounts on providing dowry in the form
of cash, vehicle, ornaments, clothes, presents, over and above on feasts to a very large number of
guests as also on decoration causing a lot of worry and giving such parents sleepless nights. The
buck does not end here and they perforce are made to continue meeting the bridegrooms and
their families demands even afterwards throughout their life

4.Healthcare

To provide free healthcare, Sai Dham has set up 18 Homoeopathic dispensaries along with
Allopathic clinics for TB, Eyes, Dental, Gynecology and Medicines serving more than 1200
patients per day.

Though Education and Health are Central/State governments subjects, the Govts. have miserably
failed in both the directions. Although many speciality hospitals have come up in India but these
all are out of common mans reach. Moreover in villages there are basic treatments. For small
ailments, people have to rush to towns and cities to get the treatment.

After the founder, took to the devotion of Shri Sai Baba of Shirdi in 1986, a desire soon grew
within him that he should serve the cause of the poor and needy through health care and
established, one by one, 18 charitable homeopathic dispensaries and other medical services
serving today about 1500 patients daily, detailed as under:

35
1. Homeopathic treatment through a network of 18 charitable clinics
2. Dental Clinic
3. TB Clinic
4. Gynaecology Clinic
5. Allopathic Medicine Clinic
6. Eye Clinic
7. Cataract Eye Operations of about 100 patients every month
8. HIV-AIDS awareness
9. Family Planning awareness
10. Blood Donation Camps
11. Ayurvedic (Herbal) treatment for Diabetes
36
5.Orphanage

We are supporting three orphans which are being looked after by a teacher who happens to be
their relation.

6.Government Schools

Pleased with our service to humanity, particularly in the field of education to the rural poor and
the under-privileged, the Government of Haryana has handed over to us the management of eight
of their schools in Faridabad to improve hygiene, infrastructure and quality of education.

7.Temple

Shirdi Sai Baba Temple

Away from the din and noise of the city, in the lap of Mother Nature amongst lush green and
peaceful surroundings, stands an imposing edifice of the great Saint of Shirdi - Shri Sai Baba. It
vibrates peace and provides relief to a large number of persons, who throng the place. The
spiritual atmosphere of the place is soul stirring. As devotees approach the complex, they
experience bliss within and forget the worries of life.

Started in a thatched hut with just a small picture of Sri Sai Baba of Shirdi in 1988, the temple
situated in Faridabad and popularly known as Sai Dham, with the grace of Sri Sai Baba, has
grown into a premier Sai Institution. It stands on a three-acre piece of land, donated by its
founder Saisevak Motilal Gupta and is about 30km from the Capital of India - New Delhi.

It has a spacious hall of about 600 sq. meters floor area and a mezzanine floor of 300 sq. meters
with immaculately laid floors of white, green and yellow marble with a 5.25 feet life-like white
marble idol of Baba installed therein which looks compassionately on His devotees and sheds
His grace all around.

37

RECENT EVENTS OF SAI DHAM

1.SAI DHAM EDUCATIONIST AWARDS BY DR. HARSH VARDHAN

Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Honorable Union Minister for Science, Technology and Earth Sciences
present SaiDham Gyan Puruskar 2015 to thirty eminent educationists of Faridabad on Saturday
17th October 2015 in a grand function organised by renowned NGO, Shirdi Sai Baba Temple
Society, Faridabad.

Dr. Harsh Vardhan who was Chief Guest of the function acclaimed the unique social work being
done by SaiDham in the area of education, facilitating mass marriages, providing skill

39
development with placement to weaker section of the society under the dynamic leadership
of Motilal Gupta, whom he was glad to describe as Sant.

Dr. Vardhan emphasized on the need of quality education and called upon all educational
institutions and NGOs to ensure that no child in India remains uneducated. He also called
participation of one all in the progress of the country, particularly if we intend to see India as
VishwGuru again. The Founder Chairman of Sai Dham, Motilal Gupta while welcoming the
Chief Guest and Educationists called upon all educational institutions that all public schools may
kindly run two shifts, one for paid students as now and other absolutely free for weaker section
of the society since they have resources and could easily afford it to take India to greater heights,
to ensure that no child remains uneducated.

ML Bidani, Patron of SaiDham while introducing Dr. Harsh Vardhan described him as a great
patriot whose insight and dedicated efforts have made it possible for India to be Polio free four
years ago.

The initiative of SaiDham to honour thirty eminent educationists with Sai Dham Gyan Puruskar
2015 which included Prashant Bhalla, Kanta Sharma, Shashi Malik, Jai Prakash Gupta, Jyoti
Gupta, US Verma, Shashi Adlakha, SD Jain, S. Samra, Satish Ahuja, ML Gupta, SS Chaudhary,
Deviya Gupta, BD Sharma, Renu Sood, Vidhu Grover, DK Chugh, Anil Kumar, SS Gusain,
Suresh Chaander, Ritu Kohli, Subhash Sorayan, Venay Gupta, Bimla Verma, RK Bhatia, Rakesh
Mudgil, Satyavir Dagar, Anand Mehta, Mahesh Sharma And Deep Chand Sharma was greatly
appreciated.

40
2. SAI DHAM GYM PURASKAR

In its effort to promote and propagate the importance of education, SaiDham has instituted
SaiDham Gyan Puraskar 2015, for the first time in the history of Faridabad at such a massive
scale to 30 eminent educationists, which includes Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, Dean, Founder,
Managing Director, Presidents, CEOs and Principals who have made a mark in the field of
education through years of dedication and commitment, to be presented by none other but an
luminary Dr Harsh Vardhan, Honble Minister for Science, Technology and Earth Sciences,
Government of India.

Both educationist and the potter play almost a similar role in the sense of creating something
unique. Students are like clay in the hands of educationists who can shape them into independent
and confident individuals or into reclusive rebels. Though there are other external causes that can

41
influence a child choosing a particular path in life, an educationists role in moulding the child is
undeniable.

3.SHABANA AZMI VISIT TO SAI DHAM

Actress and ex-MP Shabana Azmi visited Sai Dham on 12-03-2014 and whole-heartedly
appreciated the zeal, effort and activities done at the NGO. She quoted -

"I was told by Nilima that if I had not visited Sai Dham at Faridabad, I would be missing
something in life. Today, after visiting Sai Dham, I find that there is much more to see here than
I had heard. My father, Kaifi Azmi, although physically not competent, yet he had passion to
work for womenfolk of the area Mijwan (Dist Azamgarh-UP). He started a Centre where
women of the village could learn sewing and stitching. Today, I am proud to say that the women
of the centre are doing the job of Manish Malhotra, renowned fashion designer. Namrata Goyal,
42
my God daughter, a dynamic youth has shown exemplary dedication and devotion in managing
Mijwan Society.

I would also like to say that India would not be able to achieve desired growth, unless we
empower the women. We need to work in the villages where 80% of our population lives, and
improve the lot of women by empowering them in practical terms and not on paper. We need to
improve their health majority of the women are anaemic resulting in death during pregnancy. A
shocking data is that the more than the number of women die in a year in Europe, die during
pregnancy in India. Right from childhood girl is taught that she has to look after the kitchen and
the children. This thinking needs to be changed and women must get equal rights and share in the
society. It is irony of fate, that on one hand there are several women who occupy prestigious
positions in India, and in the same country the girl child is often killed in womb. We cannot live
with double standards any more, and must change our attitude. Education to girls must be given
at par with the boys.

In India, several NGO are doing good job, and Sai Dham is doing an excellent job under the able
and dedicated leadership of dynamic Motilal Gupta ji, as I heard the previous speakers who
spoke great of him and today I have seen with my eyes. Guptaji is a visionary is certainly doing
great work trying to make life of the downtrodden people better. His work is humbling for me
and invigorating. I leave feeling inspired and look forward to an alliance with our NGO Mijwan
Welfare Society. I wish him good luck and pray for his long life.

Let us resolve that we shall make at least one person happier by providing him quality education
and development of skill."

51
Conclusion

Child education is really necessary as it builds their confidence and with the help of that they can
easily survive in the society. From the above study I can clearly say that SAI DHAM is doing a
really good job in this regard as they are helping lots of children. But there are certain issues as
well, they should create more awareness among the world and tell them the importance of childs
education and with the help of this they can help lots of poor families. SaiDham should conduct a
survey within the trust to know the problems of the children. SaiDham should also promote its
trust so that large number of people gets to know about the trust because of which they can give
donations or can come forward by becoming the volunteer.
