Shauna brought

room that left you
changed forever

Indulge me for a moment. As we enter our 31st

year of Hometown Sports, I would like to think
we have gotten to know each other. However,
many of you did not know my wife, Shauna,
who went to be with the Lord on the 16th of
May. I will never be the same. I realize, through
Gods grace, I will laugh and smile again.
I have two grown children and a grandson to
live for as well, but Shauna brought a presence
into a room that left you changed forever. Ask
her friends from where she grew up in Wasco
or those she worked with at Broadway/Macys
or Loudon elementary or even the numerous
places she volunteered her time.

So what made Shauna special? Her personality?

Her beauty? I would say yes to both, but
the underlying reason was her unwavering,
unapologetic devotion to live her life for her Lord
and Savior, Jesus Christ. That may not go over
so well in some places of public education or
government, but it did in the Kerr household.

There were times in our marriage when I put

When she began her four-year battle with cancer

shared her faith in her most desperate of times.
She gave praise when most of us would have
asked, Why me? I will always remember three
moments in time during her long battle. The first
upon being initially diagnosed with breast cancer,
she cried, and I saw a fear in her eyes that went
straight to my soul. She survived that battle with
the help of 12 rounds of chemotherapy, but that
same chemotherapy prevented her from having
her regularly scheduled colonoscopy. Once
cleared, almost a year later, her colonoscopy
showed stage 4 colon cancer. Again, a second
time, the look on her face was like a punch to
the stomach. That look will live with me forever. I times, but it never seems adequate when you

Mountain
MAN By Greg Kerr
@GKerr29sports
July 3, 2016. It was the day Steve Denman knew his next
season as head football coach at Tehachapi high school
would be his last. It was on that day, Denman made
reservations to visit Yosemite National Park with his wife
Judy, such reservations require a one year notice. In other
words, Denman knew then, he would be free of the day
to day responsibilities as the face of Mountain Football
in the summer of 2017.

For 35 years his game day routine was the same, I would
arrive at school before 7AM, I would check my emails,
teach my classes and then meet Judy for a sandwich in
the afternoon. It was their own personal pregame huddle,
usually at the Apple Shed, or more recently, Kohnens
Bakery. His body of work by the numbers befitting of life on
a mountain, 17 league titles, seven CIF championships and
300 career wins. Denman would be the first to say he didnt

Retiring from the sideline has come with a few adjustments,

Tyler Schilhabel Turning
Tragedy into Opportunity

By Jon Doss @JonDossBAK

Tragedy and opportunity are not often spoken about

in the same breath, especially when that tragedy is
as breathtaking as in the case of Bakersfields Tyler
Schilhabel.

In September of 2010, Schilhabel, a promising

16-year-old quarterback at Independence High
Schoolwith dreams of playing college football
was paralyzed from the waist down following an ATV
accident at Oceano Dunes on Californias coast.

All of a sudden, the sport Schilhabel had dedicated

so much of his life to, no longer seemed like an
option.

Immediately after being hurt, I knew I wasnt going

to be playing anymore, but I didnt want to be without

develop a relationship with then-Cardinal head coach

I couldve said my life was still going to be fulfilling, but

given me more I dont know that I couldve imagined all these things
happening, Schilhabel said. Ive come to understand

couldve imagined otherwise.

I told (coach Whittingham) I was graduating in a
couple weeks and that I was interested in a career
in college football, Schilhabel said. He offered me
a job on the spot.

But the quick offer came with a caveat; Whittingham

wanted Tyler to get a full year of coaching under his
belt.

Without hesitation, Schilhabel went back to the

community that supported him most since that
weekend in 2010, Independence High School.

Under head coach Lucas Lucero last season, the

Falcons again for the first time since his accident. Tyler with former Centennial, now Carolina Panther

ABEHIND
FIELD OF HIS OWN
THE SCENES WITH JESUS PEREZ
By Greg Kerr @GKerr29sports

H ow many of us look at a football field and

see a canvas? Jesus Perez does. A graduate of
Centennial High School, Perez has an artistic
flair which has found its way onto many of our
local high school football fields. The first job for
this former Golden Hawk was naturally, Shafter.
Two years ago in Shafter I noticed their logo
and thought it would look cool on the field, I asked
about doing it and they were open to it. So Jesus,
who uses a grid paper to map out his designs, put
paint to the turf and the Shafter General came to life
in its new home at midfield.

Since then, Jesus, a grounds worker at South

High, has painted midfield logos and endzones at
Independence, Highland, East, Golden State, Mira
Monte, South, North and yes, Centennial. The C
with the claw around it is one of my favorites, the
Rebel head at South is another, I have to mix paints
to get the skin tone right.

A typical job can take as many as 21 hours of

labor, using 35 gallons of paint for the endzones
and anywhere from 15 to 40 gallons for the logo at
midfield. I enjoy doing some good, and to see the
finished product on the field is awesome.
Photos provided by Jesus Perez.
Jesus is already in demand for the upcoming
season with a number of homecoming dates on
his calendar already booked. A season of blank
canvasses awaits him.
