A fuzzy logic controller based indirect vector control of induction motor has
been presented. Fuzzy logic controller has been designed for speed control loop. The
simulation has been carried out using SIMULINK Fuzzy Logic toolbox user guide. In
order to minimize the real-time computational burden simple membership functions
and rules have been used. Since exact system parameters are not required in the
implementation of the proposed controller, the performance of the drive system is
robust, stable and sensitive to parameters and operating condition variations. In order
to prove the superiority of the FLC, a conventional PI controller based IM drive
system has also been simulated and the performance has been investigated at different
dynamic operating conditions. It is concluded that the proposed fuzzy logic controller
has shown superior performances over the PI controller and form the wave form of
the stator current, we can say that under all the conditions the fuzzy logic controller
optimize the stator current that is input to the motor drive and give considerable
saving in energy required. The simulation results demonstrate that significant
potential of conservation in Indian industries by choosing several possible ways of
implementing energy optimal control. The drive system has been maintained
satisfactory dynamic performance even when the motor operates at part load.

Energy optimization and operating cost minimization was applied to the
experimental set up and RO plant of Dairy Industry. 4000KWh, in terms of energy
cost of Rs. 17000 per annum can be saved for a 1 hp motor driven pumping system
used in experimental set-up with the payback period of 1.3 year and NPV of Rs.
87095 for the life span of 10 years against the total investment of Rs. 22000. For RO
plant pumping system in Dairy Industry with Induction motor of 37 KW, with optimal
control strategy suggested, annually electrical energy of 96000 KWh can be saved.
Rs. 41760 in MD charges and 408000 in energy charges with total savings of Rs.
449760 may be saved per annum with the payback period of 1.33 year and NPV of
Rs. 2286401 can be achieved against the investment of Rs. 600000.
The results show excellent performance of the VSD with the proposed control
strategy, in terms of, speed control, efficiency and operating cost.
Future Scope
1. The industrial loads considered in the present work are varying continuously
with respect to time. Hence the design of efficiency optimization controllers
with less convergence time will be useful to operate such drives with good
dynamic performances. Further work can be focused to minimize convergence
time in hybrid optimal energy controller.
