I am delighted that UNESCO Hong Kong association with the support of its associates
is organizing the 2.18 Peace Makers Cultural Celebration on the theme The SDGs as
building blocks for peace. This peace program launched in 2012 aims to sensitize and
catalyze the youths, and to build a Sustainable World.

This multi pronged program aims to ramp up efforts to involve all people in the
community, particularly the youths, for awareness and support to the Sustainable
Development Goals as set out by the United Nations to be achieved by 2030. The 17
SDGs with 169 targets are aimed to bring lasting peace and prosperity for all and to
protect our planets natural resources and climate for the present and future generation.

We recognize the fact that societies are becoming multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and
multi-religious. In addition, the world community faces many challenges, like the
climate change, wars and conflicts, religious and cultural intolerance, migration and
refugees, population explosion, poverty and health issues, to name a few. These
challenges are complex and compelling which calls for collective and concerted efforts
from all sections of the society. To transform words into practice, we need an
integrated approach and involvement of the people. Governments alone cannot do this
work without the active support of the people. As noted by the new Secretary General
of the United Nations, Mr. Antonio Guterres : Progress and prosperity depends on
peace but peace depends on us.

UNESCO Clubs and Associations, a peoples movement that is spread across about
100 countries, are committed to support the programs and actions of United Nations
and its specialized agencies, particularly UNESCO. The present initiative of the
UNESCO HK is a manifestation of commitment for building a peaceful, harmonious
and environmental friendly sustainable future by involving community members.
I am sure that this initiative of UNESCO HK will achieve the desired results. It will
spread the message of peace and international understanding among the participants
and direct people to build a peaceful and cohesive society.

My heartiest congratulations to UNESCO Hong Kong Association on the launching Peacemakers Cultural
Celebration yearly. Indeed, it is my honor to play a small part of promoting peaceful minds in the community.
The core mission of UNESCO in pursuing peace is important to-day as it was in 1945 after WWII. In to-days
world where world conflicts are prevalent, capacity for peace building is even more imperative.
The 2017 Peacemakers Cultural Celebration is an event presented by UNESCO Hong Kong Association in
conjunction with HK.WeCARE and The Rotary District 3450 to engage members of the community to discover the
linkages between peace and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) as part of this capacity building
effort.
This programme is now in the 5th year with support from stakeholders including both local and international
community, education institutions as partners. This is truly an exemplar of the 17th SDG 'Partnerships for the
Goal'!
Life is full of conflict, with mutual understanding, tolerance, respect and unwavering effort, I am sure we can build
up a genuine Utopia for our future generation.
Again, thanks to those who joined us all to heighten public awareness of building a sense of global community and
common humanity worldwide, especially under the leadership of my friend, Mitzi Leung who I have known for
many years.
If all countries work together, we could overcome all difficulties on the road ahead and the risk, in promoting
lasting peace and common prosperity.
Wishing you all the success on the occasion of Peacemakers Cultural Celebration on 18 February 2017.
With warmest regards

Rafael Aharoni
We couldnt have come this far without you

The 2017 Peacemakers' Cultural Celebration event marks the 5th anniversary of UNESCO HK
Association's staunch efforts to promote intercultural understanding and UNESCO's mission to
build peace. It also celebrates the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong's establishment as a Special
Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China.

For the first time, the role of culture has been recognized within the framework of UNESCO's
Sustainable Development Goals (2015), including those that focus on quality education,
sustainable cities, the environment, economic growth, sustainable consumption and production
patterns, peaceful and inclusive societies, gender equality and food security. Indeed peace and
Prof (Dr) Samuel Leong sustainability are vitally important to maintaining the quality of life and to the economic and

Academy for Performing Arts
The Celebration is a carnival-like market place that promotes intercultural dialogue, peace and
sustainable development. It will involve over 1000 young people engaging in "actions for peace"
such as calligraphy, planting and skipping for peace and to be recognized as 2017 Peacemakers.
Special thanks to the wide range of individuals and organizations for their support and
contributions to the multifarious activities, including music and cultural performances, country
booths, e-passport, peace parade and lucky draw.

I wish every visitor and participant a peace and fun-filled cultural experience that would
hopefully raise your awareness of and commitment to world peace and sustainability.

Message from the Acting Australian Consul-General
The embrace of peace and harmony is more than a simple desire; it is at the core of
human society. And nothing is more important to any community than the development
of its young people.
That is why Australia is pleased to support this Peacemakers Cultural Celebration and to
commend UNESCO Hong Kong and its commitment to global peace and sustainable
development goals.
These are also important to Australia, which is a signatory to the 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development. The 2030 Agenda helps Australia in advocating for a strong
focus on economic growth and development in our region and in promoting the Agendas
priorities. These include ending poverty and hunger, achieving gender equality, taking
action to combat climate change, promoting the sustainable use of ocean and land
resources and providing access to education and justice for all.
Congratulations to UNESCO Hong Kong and in particular I applaud the commitment of
students and their schools to upholding and promoting the important values of peace and
cultural understanding. Our future, after-all, will ultimately be in the hands of these
future leaders.

Congratulatory Message to 2017 Peacemakers Cultural

Celebration
It is my privilege to extend my best wishes to 2017 Peacemakers Cultural Celebration. I
congratulate The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and UNESCO Hong Kong
Association for taking this great initiative. I hope this noble endeavour would contribute
in promoting mutual understanding, tolerance and peace.
On the eve of kicking-off the Peacemakers Celebration, I fondly recall one very much
related important historic event. This is the resolution adopted by UNESCO on
November 17, 1999, proclaiming the observance of 21st February each year, as the
International Mother Language Day, in recognition of unprecedented sacrifice made
by Bangladesh for the cause of her mother tongue, Bangla (Bengali) on 21st February,
2952. It was adopted to commemorate the martyrs who sacrificed their lives on this date
in 1952. It may be relevant to mention here that on 21.02.1952, some heroic Bengali
sacrificed their lives while demonstrating for ensuring due recognition for their mother
tongue, Bengali, which was spoken by 56%, i.e the majority of the population, as one
of the state languages of the country. The above mentioned resolution not only
encouraged linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism, but also solidarity
based on understanding, tolerance and dialogue.
I wish every success of the 2017 Peacemakers Cultural Celebration.
Thank you all.

Message from the Rt. Revd Andrew Chan

May I convey my wish to the Peacemakers Celebration this year.

Chinese people have long promoted one world where there is a place for everyone and for each person. They dream of a world of one country
and race, where everyone can contribute his or her talents in their fullness, and where all resources are fully utilized. They hope that all people,
whether man or woman, old or young, sick or healthy, can receive the love and care they need throughout their entire lives. There would be no
deceit or treason, theft or robbery. It would truly be a world of security and perfection.( Utopia from The Book of Rites by
Confucius.)
In fact, not only Chinese people, in the bottom of everyones heart, Universal Brotherhood / sisterhood is an ethos we admire. When there are
such vast differences among people in outlook, in morality, how can such a dream come true?

Certainly, peace is not easily achieved, but we must work hard for it. Nevertheless, we must have hearts that are humble and full of love, and
try to create an environment that fosters all that is required for peace. We may not offer immediate solutions today, but we may remind us of
three reasons for peace: 1.We belong to a one single family of human being. 2. We share same resources (sun, moon, air) in the world. 3.We
live in a unique Village of the earth.
Is there anything in the world more important than these three points? Arguments over social structure? Disagreements over the political
The Rt. Revd Andrew Chan diversity? Differences of opinion? Differences in class, nation, culture? Argument about the meaning and content towards democracy,
freedom, human rights, and justice?

The programme today is very significant for all, particularly our young participants, as it tells us to build such an environment of peace. May
Bishop of Western Kowloon
all those who are participating in this event may bring peace and harmony to our communities.

Dear Prof Dr. Samuel Leong and Ms Mitzi Leung

Co-chairs Organizing committee of 2016 Peacemakers Cultural Celebration

Thank you very much for the invitation to be the Officiating Guest of Peacemakers Cultural Celebration Ceremony on 18 February 2017.

I appreciate the efforts for the promotion of peace and understanding, indeed it is a noble work, which is needed for the establishing of
peaceful, harmonious and developed society.

No society can be developed unless peace prevail, no peace can be achieved unless justice is ruled, no justice without equality and equality
required trust and recognition, to build a trust it is needed to sit together and understand each others.

Your platform indeed represents all ethnic and religious background people so we all must support it and promote its programme for the peace
and harmony.

I congratulate you and your team of UNESCO Hong Kong for the efforts to bring the people of different back grounds and cultures on one
platform.

I wish the best and pray for your success and world peace.

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the members of St Johns Anglican Cathedral, it is my great joy to offer my congratulations to the 2017 Peacemaker Cultural
Celebration. This is a meaningful gathering in which people from all walks of life gather to dialogue and build relationships with each other.
So much stigma, discrimination and assumptions in our world are caused by a lack of understanding and a refusal of getting to know one
another. Jesus Christ says, Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called children of God. Through this event, as peacemakers you
are blessing each other and the human family. May God bless you all as you take part in this day of Peacemakers Celebration!

and SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Thank You UNESCO for continuing the PEACEMAKERS CELEBRATION in 2017, more than ever today we need to uphold peace

Besides talking around tables we must also be doing as St James says in the New testament we must be Doers of the Word and not Hearers
Only It is only by listening doing and working together and sharing each others resources no matter how small we can bring about Peace
Reconciliation and sustain development in our world. It starts with usand what better way to celebrateour diversity and tell our storythan
having a culturalcelebration. CongratulationsUNESCOand may we work togethertoday and the future.
