Team Introduction
Hello, we are a team of six containing three girls and three
boys, our names are Lucy Cooper, Luca Feldman, Michael
Friswell, Alana Grey, Rose Murray and Clayton Ryan.

We are from Belmont High School which is located an hour from

Melbourne we are in the western suburbs of Geelong and we are
about a ten minute drive from the city!

Belmont high has over twelve hundred students, we have year

7s to 12s. Our school was established in 1955 by
John.P.Foster. Our school motto is Strive for the highest!

We are six very lucky students to be able to attend the School

for leadership camp. We had 4 boys try and get into this camp,
only three boys were eligible and we had more than 20 girls
trying out for the positions and only three girls could go. What
we want to gain out of this leadership experience is being able
to improve our confidence, leadership skills, social awareness
(living with 40 other people our age), self-awareness and the
opportunity of being here at Snowy River Campus.

While we have been here at Snowy we have gained a lot of

knowledge about leadership. We have been able to work in
groups with different people, been able to do group activities
with our expo group which is East Doncaster. It has been such a
great opportunity here at Snowy, none of us want to go back
home!
About the Snowy River Campus

The Snowy River Campus of the School for Student Leadership (SSL) was built in
2006 after the success of the Alpine School Campus situated high up in the Victorian
Alps. It started operating in 2007. The school is now one of the three Residential
Campuses which makes up the School for Student Leadership and funded by the
Victorian Department of Education. The core curriculum focuses on Student
Leadership and Personal Growth. More than $3.0 Million was allocated to construct
the 45 Student, state of the art campus and buildings located 9km east of Marlo.
Marlo was chosen because of its close proximity to the beautiful East Gippsland coast
and the wonderfully diverse environments that surround the Campus. Marlo was
selected from over 50 other sites that were nominated by rural shires across Victoria.
The school occupies a beautiful location of approximately 15 hectares on the 400 ha
airfield reserve. The site is safe and secluded and has views of the distant Erinunderra
Plateau.
The unique surrounding environment caters for a range of unique outdoor activities
to take place, including surfing at Cape Conran, Canoeing at the Yeerung River and in
the Snowy River Estuary, caving at Buchan, mountain biking around the Marlo Plains
and hiking throughout the Cape Conran Coastal Park. The rich indigenous history of
the Gunai/Kurnai people and their connection to this area is a key learning focus, as
is our regular interaction with local community groups and schools.
Our School program runs 9-10 weeks and our diverse curriculum includes, Social and
Self Awareness, Metacognition, Cultural Diversity and Decision Making and Actions.
Students also obtain CPR/First Aid and Safe Food Handling qualifications. All students
experience being student leader and there are many opportunities to develop public
speaking skills. Students complete a Local Learning Project and develop a Community
Learning Project to be implemented in their home communities when they return
home. All students record their personal journeys in a document called a Portfolio and
which they publish along with daily reflections called IDEARR on a Website.
Project Overview

Our idea for the project came about after we discussed the issue
that is young peoples health. We felt having the opportunity to
be able to further educate children on good nutrition is an
effective program for our Community Learning Project (CLP).
This project will benefit the neighboring primary students within
our Belmont community.
We hope by conducting this Healthy Eating Program that the
knowledge the children gain will have a real impact on their
future and how they not only perceive a healthy lifestyle, but
how they will apply their knowledge throughout their life.
The project will include going into one or more primary schools
and educating the students on healthy eating by running
cooking sessions and take home booklets. These booklets will
include hygiene in the kitchen, safe kitchen practices and some
simple and healthy recipes. We hope that this program has a
positive effect on the students health and wellbeing.
