Introduction
Boundary conditions can be set when the Fluid Domain has been
defined. Additional boundary conditions can be set at any stage prior
to generating the Definition File.

See Applying Boundary Conditions (p. 1117) for details of how to

set boundary conditions.

You create boundary conditions using the Boundary Conditions form in

CFX-Build, available when you select the Boundary Conditions radio
button in the Top Window. You specify the boundary condition name,
type, values and location.

Available Boundary Condition Types In CFX-5

The type of Boundary Conditions that can be set depends upon what
sort of boundary or interface the Boundary Condition is placed on.

A Fluid Boundary is the external surface of the Fluid Domain

excluding surfaces where a Solid Sub-domain meets the edge of the
Fluid Domain.

A Solid Boundary is where a Solid Sub-domain meets the edge of

the Fluid Domain.

A Fluid-Solid Interface is the interface between a Solid Sub-

domain and the region of the Fluid Domain in which fluid flows.

A Solid-Solid Interface is the interface between two different Solid

Sub-domains

CFX-5 provides you with six different types of boundary condition:

Inlet

Outlet
Opening

Wall
Symmetry Plane

Periodic Pair - translational or rotational (single phase only)

However, the type of boundary condition that you can apply to a given
boundary depends upon its type. See Available Boundary
Conditions (p. 1113 in CFX-Build: Chapter 6) for more details.

For details on the physical meaning of these boundary condition types

refer to Boundary Conditions (p. 230 in CFX-5 Solver and Solver
Manager).

For details on the mathematical implementation of these boundary

conditions see Boundary Conditions (p. 309 in CFX-5 Solver and
Solver Manager).

Symmetry Plane
Specify a boundary where symmetry exists. You should specify a
planar face on which to locate a Symmetry Plane boundary condition.
No values are required for a Symmetry Plane. The form applies to both
Fluid Boundaries and Solid Boundaries.

Only available if a Rotating Frame of Reference is used.

Periodic Pair
Specify a Periodic Pair boundary condition for a translational or
rotational transformation. This form is relevant for both Fluid and Solid
Boundaries. However, you may not create a Periodic Pair boundary
condition which connects a Solid Boundary to a Fluid Boundary; the
surfaces selected must either both be Fluid Boundaries or both Solid
Boundaries, as appropriate to the form.

Set the Transformation for the Periodic Pair. Options

are:
Translation
Rotation.

If the transformation is rotational, specify the axis of

rotation. Please see Coordinate Frame Definitions
(p. 264 in CFX-Build: Chapter 1) for more information
.
This section is only visible when running CFX-Build in
Generate Mesh mode. Specify the lists of surfaces for
both boundaries in the Periodic Pair. Each boundary
surface in the first surface list must map to the equivalent
boundary surface in the second surface list through a
translation or rotation as specified. When the mesh
topology, type and density are different on each surface
you can specify a GGI Periodic pair. Please see
Periodic Interfaces (p. 1174 in CFX-Build: Chapter 7)
for more information.

Setting Boundary Condition Values

Boundary condition options and values are set on the Boundary
Condition Values form. The available options change to reflect the
Domain characteristics, the boundary condition type and the subset
currently being defined. For example, you can only set the temperature
at a Wall boundary if heat transfer is being modelled.

The Boundary Condition Values form is divided into sections which

relate to different aspects of the boundary condition. Some sections
only appear if the relevant options have been set on the Domains
Models form.

You can set values on the form in any dimensionally consistent units
(see Units (p. 117 in Introduction to CFX-Build)).

The following sections describe the options and required specifications

on the Values form for each type of boundary condition.

Inlet: Values for Multiphase

For a multiphase simulation using the Interfluid Transfer model, the

fluid-independent information for an Inlet is entered on the Boundary
Conditions Values form shown below. The purpose of this form is to
specify Flow Regime and Flow Specification. When the
Homogeneous model is used, the Mass and Momentum, Heat Transfer
and Turbulence information is also set on this form. The options are
available as the same as those shown on the Fluid Values... form
when using the Interfluid Transfer model, but cannot be set on a per-
fluid basis.

For a multiphase simulation, the

Flow Regime must be Subsonic.

The options for Flow Specification

are:
Static Pressure: set a Relative
Pressure then a Flow Direction
on the Fluid Values form.
Velocity: options are set on a
per fluid basis on the Fluid
Values form.
See Mass and Momentum (p. 231
in CFX-5 Solver and Solver
Manager) for more details on each
option.

information.

This section applies when Static
Pressure is set on the Boundary
Conditions Values form. Select from:
Normal to Boundary

Values form. Select from:
Normal Speed
Cartesian Velocity Components
Mass Flow Rate
See Mass and Momentum (p. 231 in

Inlet: Values for Combustion and Radiation

No specific inlet values need to be set for combustion modelling.

However, since combustion utilises multicomponent fluids, you will
need to set a mass fraction for each component at the inlet. The
Thermal Radiation options shown only apply to the P1 model.

Set the options for Flow Regime,

Mass and Momentum, Turbulence
and Heat Transfer. See Inlet
(p. 1148), Inlet: Supersonic
(p. 1149) or Inlet: Subsonic
Rotating Domain (p. 1150). Note
the multiphase is not supported
with combustion / radiation.

If you are using the P1 radiation

model, set either:
Radiative Heat Flux: set an
inlet flux in [W m^-2].
Radiation Intensity: the
direction components of X,Y
and Z must be specified.
External Blackbody
Temperature: specify a
temperature.
See Thermal Radiation (p. 235
in CFX-5 Solver and Solver
Manager).

The Components... button will

only be available if you have a
multicomponent fluid (e.g.
reacting mixture).
Set the value of any additional
variables at the inlet (if applicable).

Outlet: Values for Multiphase

For a multiphase simulation the Outlet boundary values are set on the
form below. The form shown is for multiphase flow using the Interfluid
Transfer model. If the Homogeneous model is used, the Mass and
Momentum option replaces the Flow Specification option and the Fluid
Values... form is not available..

For a multiphase simulation, the Flow

Regime must be Subsonic.

Set the Flow Specification or Mass and

Momentum to be one of:

with a rotating domain, a Pressure
Averaging option must be set in the
same way as for a single phase
case (see Outlet (p. 1154)).

Multiphase. Mass and Momentum is
set on a per fluid basis for this
option.
Degassing Condition: Only for
Interfluid Transfer Multiphase.
Normal Speed: Only for
Homogeneous Multiphase. Set a

type. However, the options are extended to include Average Static
Pressure, and Degassing Condition.

If Static Pressure or Average Static Pressure are specified, the user

is prompted for a value of Relative Pressure.

Component Models
The Component Models form is available if a selected fluid consists
of more than a single component. This form allows you to edit the Mass
Fraction of each component in a multicomponent fluid at an Inlet,
Outlet or Opening boundary. Note that you may not set the Mass
Fraction of the component which is set to use the Constraint
equation; the Mass Fraction of this component on the Boundary will be
calculated to ensure that the total Mass Fractions add up to 1. It should
also be noted that Mass Fractions cannot be set at Walls.

Use either a value or an
expression to represent the
mass fraction of a fluid
component at the boundary.

Use the expression editor to

If the selected fluid consists of more than one component, the

Component Mass Fraction section appears on the form, with a
separate section for each component. The section for the component
specified with type Constrained on the Fluid Models form appears
greyed out. The contents of this section change to accommodate the
entries in the remaining component sections. If these are Values, then
the Value is updated to be:

surfaces are required for a single boundary condition.
