GRADE 2
2 LESSONS
OBJECTIVES
To introduce the ways to generate renewable
energy and to teach students to evaluate its
benefits and drawbacks.
To introduce more interesting energy
generating ways and its efficiency in a
contemporary society.
INTERESTING FACTS
Probably, it was lightning and its effects what introduced
people to electricity. Initially, lightning appeared to a
human being as a punishment sent by God or it was
associated with a dragon. Only later its real origin was
established.
The rubbing of amber was already known in Greece
600BC, but the history of electrotechnics goes back to the
times of a Greek philosopher Talis who was the first to
describe this quality of amber.
Electric energy everywhere

The demand of electricity is increasing all over the world,

however traditional sources of electricity are decreasing. What is
more, impact of electricity generation is environmentally harmful.
NON-RENEWABLE
ENERGY SOURCES
RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES
Renewable energy sources
are natural resources the
collection and reproduction
of which depends on natural
processes.

The usage of such

energy resources is
environmentally
friendly and adds to
stabilisation of climate
change.
Electricity is produced from the sun using photo elements.
They generate electrical energy on a sunny or even cloudy day.
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

Wind Energy. Wind is a renewable energy source.
Nowadays, its energy is mainly used to generate
electricity.

The wind plant

consists of:
1. Turbine (generator)
2. Wings (blades)
3. Tower
WIND PARKS

ADVANTAGES
Wind energy is infinite;
The energy wind power produces does not cause green house
gases or other pollutants;
Wind power is cost-effective

DISADVANTAGES
Wind is fluctuating (intermittent) source of energy;
Noise is regularly reported as a problem by neighbouring homes.
The construction of wind power plants and connection to
electricity power grid are expensive.
WATER ENERGY
Hydropower is power derived from the energy of falling water.
Hydro-electric power plants convert the kinetic energy contained in falling
water into electricity. Falling water is channeled through a turbine which
converts the waters energy into mechanical power. The rotation of the
water turbines is transferred to a generator which produces electricity.
Hydro-electric power plants are usually built near the flowing water: clear
lakes, rivers and ponds.
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
Free renewable source of Water ecosystems can be impacted in a
energy; negative way;
The cost of electricity The creation of dams can create flooding of
production is less than land, which means natural environment and
electricity produced from the natural habitat of animals, and even
fossil fuels; people can be destroyed;

BIOFUEL ENERGY
Biofuel is a fuel that is produced through contemporary biological
processes, such as agriculture and anaerobic digestion. Biofuels can be
derived directly from plants, or indirectly from agricultural,
commercial, domestic, and/or industrial wastes.
Sources of biofuel are
wood waste;
agricultural waste;
energy plantations;
agricultural and food waste, manure
Everything may be used to get electricity
Advantages:
constant energy production;
biofuel is cheaper than
non-renewable ones;
local biofuel resources could
replace non-renewable
resources;
different types of organic
waste may be used for
producing biofuel.
Disadvantages:
some of resources are
seasonal;
biofuel gas production
requires a lot of energy
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
Geothermal energy is thermal energy
generated and stored in the Earth. Thermal
energy is the energy that determines the
temperature of matter. The geothermal
energy of the Earth's crust originates from the
original formation of the planet and from
radioactive decay of materials
Usage:
hitting systems
producing electricity
Heat generation for heat pumps
I have learnt that
the largest geothermal energy sources
are deep underground with no visible
signs of the earth's surface
Advantages:
resources are renewable and
inexhaustible
energy production doesnt pollute the
environment.
Disadvantages:
resources are not available everywhere;
producing such energy requires a lot of
investment into technology;
the number of technical problems
associated with the operation of power
plants limits this energy production.
Future -
harnesses wind power produced by the speed of vehicles
City Speed Turbine has
enormous wind blades
which collect extra wind
gusts of air and transform
it into mechanical energy.
This aggregated wind
turbine producing energy
from passing cars caused
by air gusts is mounted in
different urban
environments
