Part II Course Details

1. Abstract
(A 150-word description about the course)

This course aims to equip the students with the knowledge on the application of the principles of
thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer to the design and analysis of engineering systems
in an integrated manner. The main focuses of the course are on the integration of the topics through a
unified approach, and the application aspects of thermofluids in real-life practical problems.

2. Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs)

(CILOs state what the student is expected to be able to do at the end of the course according to a given standard
of performance.)

No. CILOs Weighting* Discovery-enriched

(if curriculum related
applicable) learning outcomes
(please tick where
appropriate)
A1 A2 A3
1. Describe the basic principles of thermodynamics, fluid
mechanics, and heat transfer.
2. Apply the principles of thermodynamics, fluid
mechanics, and heat transfer to thermofluid systems.
3. Apply the relevant techniques for analyzing and
simulating thermofluid systems.
4. Integrate the principles stated in CILOs-1, 2 and 3 to
solve real life engineering problems.
* If weighting is assigned to CILOs, they should add up to 100%. 100%
A1: Attitude
Develop an attitude of discovery/innovation/creativity, as demonstrated by students possessing a
strong sense of curiosity, asking questions actively, challenging assumptions or engaging in inquiry
together with teachers.
A2: Ability
Develop the ability/skill needed to discover/innovate/create, as demonstrated by students possessing
critical thinking skills to assess ideas, acquiring research skills, synthesizing knowledge across
disciplines or applying academic knowledge to self-life problems.
A3: Accomplishments
Demonstrate accomplishment of discovery/innovation/creativity through producing /constructing
creative works/new artefacts, effective solutions to real-life problems or new processes.

3. Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs)
(TLAs designed to facilitate students achievement of the CILOs.)

TLA Brief Description CILO No. Hours/week (if

applicable)
1 2 3 4
Lecture Explain key concepts, principles, 2 hrs/week
theories, and their applications to the
studies and analyses of thermofluid
systems.
Tutorial Typical thermofluids mini-project 1 hr/week
problem(s) will be given to students to
solve. The students are expected to work
in teams to tackle the given problems.
This learning activity will be mainly
student-led but with some structural
guidance from the teacher during the
tutorial. At the end of the learning
activity, the students need to have their
reports and/or presentations for their
solutions of the given problem.

4. Assessment Tasks/Activities (ATs)

(ATs are designed to assess how well the students achieve the CILOs.)

Assessment CILO No. Weighting* Remarks

Tasks/Activities 1 2 3 4
Continuous Assessment: 40%
Test 10%
Mini-project 30%
Examination: 60% (duration: 3 hours)
* The weightings should add up to 100%. 100%

For a student to pass the course, at least 30% of the maximum mark for both coursework and examination
should be obtained.
