1. INTRODUCTION
Mobile Internet is the internet, in your pocket. Your favorite websites, on your mobile.
Even if you're out and about you can browse Amazon, checks your emails, and visits your
online bank - all from your phone. And the pages look as good on your mobile as they do on
your desktop. It’s simple to get started and easy to use. Simply stated the mobile internet can be
thought of as the migration of standard internet application and service to a mobile environment.
The introduction of mobile internet however raises a number of new considerations. One
important clarification is in order here; the fact that today we can use our laptop or personal
digital assistance (PDA) along with a wireless device to establish access to our internet/intranet
or other internet protocol services does not really mean that the mobile internet is already
5
available. But day by day mobile internet is becoming familiar. The mobile internet refers to the
access to browser-based web services such as the World Wide Web, WAP, and I-Mode using a
mobile device such as cell phones, PDAs, and other portable gadgets connected to a public
network. Such access does not require a desktop computer, nor a fixed landline connection. In
reality, what is defined as the mobile internet is far more complex than that. By definition, the
protocols. Therefore, in the mobile internet we also need to support millions of always-
In Bangladesh, mobile internet introduces a new vision and challenge. Actually mobile
internet is known to the Bangladeshi people from last few years. But within a short time, it
becomes popular and useful technology for the people of Bangladesh. Almost all the mobile
company of Bangladesh gives the mobile internet service. They give different packages of
internet service for their valued customers. Grameenphone launched mobile internet system in
2002. Then other companies launched within a very short time. Customers are benefited and
enjoying the packages of internet service of various Bangladeshi mobile company. So the impact

2. Background
Mobile Internet is all about Internet access from mobile devices . Mobile internet is
mobile web service which can use in mobile or cellular phone. Mobile internet standards or
generations are GPRS, EDGE, and GPS etc. General packet radio service (GPRS) is a packet
oriented mobile data service available to users of the 2G cellular communication systems global
system for mobile communications (GSM), as well as in the 3G systems. Enhanced Data rates
for GSM Evolution (EDGE), Enhanced GPRS (EGPRS) are backward-compatible digital
mobile phone technology that allows improved data transmission rates, as an extension on top of
standard GSM. EDGE is considered a 3G radio technology and is part of ITU's 3G definition.
WAP version is another type of mobile internet service. WAP (Wireless Application
Protocol) bridges the gap between internet and mobile and brings Internet content
and advanced value added service at your Mobile Phone. You will be able browse
all popular WAP sites which have been customized for mobile phone without the
need of a computer. The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) is the de-facto world standard
for the presentation and delivery of wireless information and telephony services on mobile
7
History of Mobile Internet:
The first access to the mobile web was commercially offered in Finland in 1996 on
the Nokia Communicator 9000 phone on the Sonera and Radiolinja networks. This was access
to the real internet. The first commercial launch of a mobile-specific browser based mobile web
service was in 1999 in Japan when i-Mode was launched by NTT DoCoMo. Data services
provided by the mobile networks are fast becoming popular and in some countries in Europe
people are spending more on mobile data access compared to voice services. This presents a
huge opportunity for the mobile data service developers. It was back in '98 that I got wind of the
first mobile data capabilities available on analog cell phones: the new Motorola phones could be
tethered by cable and used like a land line. In those days, it was BC Tel (before it merged with
Telus in 1999) that made them available. The WAP standards suite is maintained by an industry
consortium called the WAP Forum. Founded by Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, and Openwave
(then known as Unwired Planet) in June 1997, the WAP Forum now includes hundreds of
member companies that are infrastructure providers, software companies, and content providers.
The goal of the WAP Forum is to address the problems of wireless Internet access, ensuring that
access is not limited by vendor or underlying network technology. Since its creation, the
Wireless Application Protocol has passed through minor revisions (from 1.0 to 1.1, 1.2, and
1.2.1). WAP 2 is the first major revision since 1998. The first pre-commercial 3G network was
8
launched by NTT DoCoMo in Japan branded FOMA, in May 2001 on a pre-release of W-
CDMA technology. The first commercial launch of 3G was also by NTT DoCoMo in Japan on
October 1, 2001, although it was initially somewhat limited in scope; broader availability was
delayed by apparent concerns over reliability. The second network to go commercially live was
by SK Telecom in South Korea on the 1xEV-DO technology in January 2002. By May 2002 the
second South Korean 3G network was by KTF on EV-DO and thus the Koreans were the first to
see competition among 3G operators. The first European pre-commercial network was at the Isle
of Man by Manx Telecom, the operator then owned by British Telecom, and the first
commercial network in Europe was opened for business by Telenor in December 2001 with no
commercial handsets and thus no paying customers. These were both on the W-CDMA
technology. The first commercial United States 3G network was by Monet Mobile Networks, on
CDMA2000 1x EV-DO technology, but this network provider later shut down operations. The
second 3G network operator in the USA was Verizon Wireless in October 2003 also on
CDMA2000 1x EV-DO and this network has grown strongly since then. Basically after 2000

The mobile Internet came late to Bangladesh with connectivity in 2003. In the last few years it
has grown dramatically, although obviously from a very low base. Grameenphone's network
today covers about 95 per cent of the Bangladeshi population. The entire network has EDGE or
GPRS connectivity allowing mobile Internet access to customers with no alternative Internet
facilities. AKTEL Internet saves you from wasting time in dialing up or spending money for
each minute. GPRS/ EDGE coverage throughout the country ensures you to get high speed
connectivity with the information super highway. Norwegian Internet browsers developer Opera
Software ASA announced on Thursday (16 March), 2005 that GrameenPhone, a mobile phone
operator in Bangladesh, has selected Opera Mini to provide Internet to its mobile phone
localized version of Opera Mini as a free download to its 5.5m subscribers. This how various
mobile company of Bangladesh gives the internet service in their valued customer’s mobile.

of mobile internet to the Bangladeshi people is very positive. It is usually used as alternative
of dial-up, broadband and other internet connection due to emergency need and available.
In my view, Bangladesh people are highly benefited by the usage of mobile internet. I
expect, mobile internet is very useful and effective to all classes of people of Bangladesh.
Mobile internet gives the opportunity to use internet to the people who are not familiar to the
internet.

5. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Firstly, I conducted a survey of the general public in Dhaka on their views of the
impact of mobile internet. To the end I designed a questionnaire with different types of
questions to get useful data and information which helped me to find my research question.
Secondly, I was used the resources of the library, web and related private and
government documents. I also visited various mobile companies for finding material, statics,
reference and useful information to success my research. That’s all are include in my
secondary research.
12
During my research, I prepared a questionnaire containing 15 questions. The
questionnaire was basically designed for the impact of mobile internet in Bangladesh.
This survey particularly for questions 8-15 of questionnaire which were generalized
primary research and collected data for primary data analysis. I am giving a brief
13
The graph contains about the how familiar is mobile internet in Bangladesh? After
surveying I found that, maximum people are familiar to the mobile internet although
all the people are not using internet in their mobile. A small number of people are
not familiar to the mobile internet service. I also found that, teenager and middleager
people both male and female are not only familiar but also user of mobile internet.
14
The graph contains about the percentage of mobile internet user. Of the total
representative people that I have surveyed 53% of them are not prefer to use
internet in their mobile. But I find that 47% of them are prefer to use internet in
their mobile. The number of mobile internet user is still a smaller amount because
3) For what purpose usually you prefer to use internet in your mobile?
15
The graph shows that, of the total representative people that I have surveyed 39% of them
are using mobile internet for browsing, 20% of them are using for checking mail and 28% of
them are using for chatting purpose. I find that, people of different categories are using
mobile internet in different purpose. But moreover people are paying attention in mobile
16
When I surveyed for finding the number of people who are using mobile internet
for official purpose only, I find that, of the total representative people that I
surveyed only 17% of them are using mobile internet for official purpose and rest
of them are using for other purpose. So in conclude, maximum people are not still
17
I surveyed for knowing that mobile internet is superior to other internet system. I
come to know from the survey that, of the total representative people that I
surveyed only 9% of them are thinking mobile internet is superior to other internet
system. But majority people are not agree with that comment.
18
From the graph, 83% people of the total representative people that I surveyed are
thinking mobile internet is costly. Mobile companies are taking charge of internet
for the per kilobite uses which is pricey. But beside, they also giving the monthly
packages of internet services which are reasonable. Most of the people are not
interested on those monthly packages because still they prefer broadband and dial-
up connection for monthly package. But mobile internet is reasonable to the few
7) Do you think mobile internet is more user friendly than other internet
system?
19
Of the total representative people that I surveyed 76% of them are thinking mobile
internet is not user friendly and only few people are supporting that mobile
internet is user friendly. Mobile internet may be user friendly on those handset
which have enough feature for internet services. But those handsets are costly and
not accessible for Bangladeshi users. So still mobile internet is not user friendly in
Bangladesh.
20
I am trying to know that which category of people of Bangladesh use the mobile
internet from the question. Then I come to know that of the total representative
people that I surveyed 44% of them are teenager who are using mobile internet.
Then 26% are corporate people and 19% are professional people. So in conclude,
teenager are mass number who are using internet in their mobile.
21
The graph shows that, mobile internet is useful in Bangladesh to the 76% of
people that I surveyed. But few people are thinking that mobile internet is not
useful in Bangladesh. I found that majority people are thinking mobile internet is
useful in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh?
22
Of the total representative people that I surveyed 81% of them are thinking mobile
internet helps to develop the tecnology of Bangladesh. A few people are thinking that
mobile internet does not help to develop thr technologu of Bangladesh.I found that,
11) Do you think Bangladeshi users are taking mobile internet as just an
entertainment media?
23
I found that, the total representative people that I surveyed 66% are thinking
24
Mobile internet is hampering for young generation to the 62% people of the total
representative people that I surveyed. They complain that, young people browsing
adult website and do adult chatting from their mobile. But some people are

The mobile internet has impacted on young people’s peer groups enabling a
truly networked society. It has also impacted on the evolving relationships within the
family. Over the last two to three years, the number of mobile subscribers in Bangladesh
has been more than doubling on an annual basis. So the number people are also increasing
who use internet in their mobile. Teenager people use mobile internet more. Teenager
people are using mobile internet for chatting purpose from their mobile and also for
browsing. Corporate people, engineers, other professional people are also using internet in
their mobile in emergency need. They often check their important email in their mobile
when they are outside from their home/office. Mobile internet gives the opportunity to use
internet to the people who are not familiar to the internet. People can also use internet in
any place where mobile network is available. So, we can say that mobile internet increase
the internet user in Bangladesh. Mobile internet brings revolutionary change in technology
of people in the internet network. It is first ever wireless system internet in Bangladesh.
