NDW4MI Course Summative 2016-2017

The summative for this course is divided into two major pieces, each consisting of
multiple components. The various components for Part A are worth 15% of your course
final. The various components for Part B account for 15% of the course final. Both
sections have multiple elements which are all critical in order to prove your
understanding of the key course teachings.
**All elements of both parts of the summative must be completed in order to earn
a credit in this course.**

Part A: Contemporary Issues

What is going on in the world, how are Canadians connected, and why should I care?
You will be given class time to pursue subject matter that is connected to a contemporary issue
as connects to our class content. You can select whatever ISU subject matter you wish, in
consultation with your teacher.

Step 1: Conference with teacher about top choices and select one. Only one student will be
allowed per topic, so if you know be sure to claim your selection early.

Step 2: Identify a list of possible resources to help you gain knowledge about your approved ISU
subject. The minimum requirement for your resources includes:
a) Novel or extended text (e.g. series of case studies)
b) Film
c) 2-3 web-based scholarly articles
d) Art- music, poetry, dance,visual art, etc.
e) Additional resources as appropriate (e.g. interviews with authentic voices)

Step 3: Complete G.I. Chart. This semester your G.I. chart is due on ____________. Use these
questions to add focus to your reading and viewing. Detailed research notes, included annotated
web articles, must be submitted for evaluation. All resources lend themselves differently for this
documentation, so be sure to track the development of your thinking as you progress.

Step 4: Call to Action

The current issues that you have researched are connected to colonization and post-colonial
policy. Explore and explain this connection. Complete a GDoc outlining 5 connections. This will
be used to shape the product you develop to share what you have learned.

The final call to action will take the format of one of the following:
a) Detailed letter to a government official or organization
b) Lesson plan connected to a specific curriculum that can be shared
c) Art- music, visual art, fashion
d) Series of four posters for community outreach and sharing
e) Web-based 2.0 space for conversation and education (e.g. Google Communities, website)

Step 5: Your product will be shared in the same manner as our learning cycle summatives. As we
have learned in this course, the vast majority of indigenous culture is based on oral traditions that
are passed down verbally, from generation to generation. It is important to know your ISU
subject matter as you will describe your subject matter, and explain your process as well as your
product. Your descriptions should be able to convey the information orally; use the product to
guide your speaking about the development of your thinking as well as where you landed with
your product.

Part B: Traditional Ecological Knowledge

Why Ancient Wisdom Matters
The first part of this summative assignment is to use knowledge you have gained throughout the
course that relates to indigenous culture and traditional knowledge/practices, and create a
persuasive response that answers the question Why does ancient wisdom matter in the modern
world? You can use information from the course content, research from online sources, and
research from the library. As always, you can present this information in a number of formats
including but not limited to an essay, a speech, a series of posters, a video, or something else that
you feel will get this persuasive message across (get approval from me first!). In all formats, be
sure to back up your claims with facts and reputable sources that you can cite.

Things to remember:
This is a persuasive piece. Think about and use the facts we have learned about
that relate to the overall trend of losing global cultures (ie. Every two weeks an
elder dies and takes an entire language/culture with them).
As we have learned modern culture has marginalized many cultures, and as a
result much of the old ancient wisdoms have been silenced. You are persuading
modern culture as to why we should protect, nurture, and learn from these ancient
cultures.
Identify 3 strong points/wisdoms that are backed up with facts from reputable
sources to help you persuade.

Websites There are numerous websites that pertain to all of these topics. Be certain that they
are reputable and that you have applied the techniques imbedded throughout our course to verify
this.

Sharing Part B: Oral Presentation/Circle Share with Class -

The final part of your summative is to present your TEK to your teacher and a selection of your
classmates, and pass on this knowledge. As we have learned in this course, the vast majority of
indigenous culture is based on oral traditions that are passed down verbally, from generation to
generation. It is important to know your TEK description to be able to convey the information
orally without the use of cues. The presentation will be done in a circle setting during study
week before exams.

Choose one of the 3 Ancient Wisdoms from the first part of the summative. For example, you
may choose First Nations Medicine Wheel. In our Circle Share you will be asked to describe
what you learned from researching and learning about this specific wisdom. Explain how you
connected to it, as well as what the rest of the modern world could learn from this wisdom.
