Station #1 or #4: Interspecies Relationships

Term Definition Example

Competition Symbiotic relationship in which two or more Fox and hawk

species require the same resource in an hunting rabbits
environment

Predation A symbiotic relationship where one species Bear eating

captures and feeds on another species salmon

Symbiosis Permanent, close relationship between two or Cleaner wrasse

more organisms of different species and larger fish

Mutualism Symbiotic relationship where both organisms Ants and acacia

of different species benefit trees

Commensalism Symbiotic relationship where one species Moss growing on

benefits and the other species is neither a tree
harmed nor benefited.

Parasitism Symbiotic relationship where one species Brown-headed

benefits at the expense of another (host) cowbirds
species (look it up)

Niche Strategies and adaptations that a species uses Hummingbird

in its environment. Includes interactions with beak
biotic and abiotic factors in a habitat.
(completed chart 16 pts)
How is commensalism different than mutualism? Which type of relationship would you
rather be a part of? (2 pts)

In mutualism both species involved benefit from the relationship, while only one species
is benefited by commensalism and the other species is unaffected. I would rather be a
part of mutualism, because by benefitting the other species, it increases the chances of
that relationship continuing.

Are these relationships abiotic or biotic factors? Support your claim with reasoning.
(2pts) (These relationships are ______ factors, because)

These relationships are biotic because they involve living organisms.

Station #2 or #5: Energy Pyramid

(completed chart 12 pts)

Use the blue Biology books (pg 51-52), and your knowledge of energy transfer, to
answer the following questions: (2pts each)
Why do you think so much energy is lost as it is transferred to the next trophic level?
Organisms at the next trophic level are not physically able to capture and eat all of the
available food on the level below them, resulting in only a small portion of energy (food)
being transferred.

Is it more efficient to be a herbivore, or a carnivore? Why do you think cannibals are

rare?
More efficient to be a herbivore, because they get 10% of original energy, while
carnivores only get 1% or 01.%. From an energy perspective, cannibals are rare because it
is nutritionally inefficient to eat secondary and tertiary consumers. Just eat a vegetable!

Where does the other 90% of energy from each trophic level go?
Used during metabolism and lost to the environment as heat.

What is Biomass? Which trophic level contains the most biomass? Which contains the
least?
Biomass is the total (dry) mass of all living matter in a given area or trophic level.
Producers have the most biomass, while tertiary consumers typically contain the least
biomass.

Station #3 or #6: Biomes Map Questions ( 2pts each)

Name the three main biomes of the United States (land only).
Grassland, Deciduous Forest, Desert

Place an X on the map to show your approximate location. What two biomes are closest
to where you live?
Desert and Deciduous Forest

A person is driving from Los Angeles, California to Washington D.C. Name the biomes
the person will pass through, in the correct order.
