A diode is a two-terminal nonlinear device that performs differently under forward and reverse bias.

The
primary function of the diode is rectication. When it is forward biased (the higher potential is
connected to the anode lead), it will pass current. When it is reversed biased ( the higher potential is
connected to the cathode lead), current ow is blocked.

Most multimeters can be used to determine the operating condition of a diode. They have scale
denoted by a diode symbol that will indicate the condition of a diode in the forward- and reverse-bias
regions. In this experiment, it is found that if it is connected to establish a forward-bias condition, the
meter will display the forward voltage (offset voltage) across the diode. For forward bias (positive V and
positive I), the diode can conduct a large current with a relatively small turn-on voltage. If connected to
establish a reverse-bias condition, an 0L appeared on the display. For reverse bias (negative V and
negative I), the diode supports a relatively-constant small current regardless of voltage.

If, we just reverse the diode to measure the I-V characteristics, the sudden change might destroy the
diode. The diode should not be short-circuited. That will allow a ow of huge current which might
destroy the diode. Current must not pass through it for a very long time. It will then increase the
depletion region and develop a uctuating resistance.
