 Water Use Table Instructions
This project will help you find out how much water you use inside your home every day.

Step 1: About you

Fill in your name and the day of the week. Tape this sheet up someplace you will always
remember to fill it in. The bathroom is a good place.

Step 2: Water uses (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th)
Write down each time you use water. Each time you use a bathroom or kitchen faucet, or take a
shower, record the number of minutes you use the faucet or shower.
Each time you flush the toilet, take a bath, run the dishwasher, or run the clothes washer, record
the number of times you used the fixture. You want to record how many times you flush the
toilet, take a bath, use a dishwasher, or use a clothes washer, not how many minutes you use
them. If the rest of your family is completing water use tables then only one person should
record each use of the clothes washer or dishwasher.

Step 3: How many minutes did you use this fixture?

At the end of the day add the number of minutes or times you used your bathroom faucet,
shower, and kitchen faucet. Write these numbers in the line that asks How many minutes did
you use this fixture?

Step 4: How many times did you use this fixture?

At the end of the day add the number of times you flushed your toilet, took a bath, used a
dishwasher, or washed clothes. Write these numbers in the line that asks How many times did
you use this fixture?

Step 5: How many gallons does this fixture use?

Your fixtures use different amounts of water depending on how they were made. Use the
information below to find out how much water it takes each time you use each fixture. Write this
number in the line that asks How many gallons does this fixture use?

Bathroom faucet:
Ask your parents if you have a high-efficiency faucet. If you have a high-efficiency
faucet, write 1 for the number of gallons of water your faucet uses every minute.
If you do not have a high-efficiency faucet or dont know if you have one, write 2.2.

Shower:
Ask your parents if you have a high-efficiency shower. If you have a high-efficiency
shower, write 2 for the number of gallons of water your shower uses every minute.
If you do not have a high-efficiency shower or dont know if you have one, write 2.5.

Bath: If you took a bath, write 40 for the number of gallons it usually takes to fill a bathtub.

Toilet: Ask your parents how old your toilet is. Most toilets will have a stamp in the porcelain
inside the toilet tank that tells you what year it was made. If you cant find it, youll have to
estimate. The numbers below tell you how many gallons of water it takes to flush your toilet.
If your toilet was made before 1982, write 5.
If your toilet was made between 1983 and 1993, write 3.5.
If your toilet was made after 1994, write 1.6.
If you have a WaterSense-labeled toilet, write 1.3.
 Kitchen faucet:
Ask your parents if you have a high-efficiency faucet. If you have a high-efficiency
faucet, write 2 for the number of gallons of water your faucet uses every minute.
If you do not have a high-efficiency faucet or dont know if you have one, write 2.2.

Dishwasher:
Ask your parents if you have an Energy Star dishwasher. If you have an Energy Star
dishwasher, write 4.5 for the number of gallons of water your dishwasher uses.
If you do not have an Energy Star dishwasher or dont know if you have one, write 9.

Clothes washer:
Ask your parents if you have a high-efficiency clothes washer. High-efficiency clothes
washers usually have the door on the front instead of on top. If you have a high-
efficiency clothes washer, write 21 for the number of gallons of water your clothes
washer uses.
If you do not have a high-efficiency clothes washer or dont know if you have one,
then write 41.

Step 6: How many gallons were used by this fixture today?

Now you have the information that will help you find out how many gallons of water you used
today with each fixture. Find the number of minutes or the number of times you used a fixture.
(This is the number you found in steps 3 and 4.) Multiply this number by the number of gallons
used by that fixture every minute or every time it is used (the number you found in step 5).

Step 7: How many gallons did you use today?

Once you know how much water you used with each fixture, you can find out how much water
you used inside your home today. Add all the gallons used by each fixture together. Write the
answer next to the line that asks How many gallons did you use today? This is your total
indoor home water use for the day you did this project.

Step 8: How many gallons did you use this week?

Try to fill in one table each day for a week. Then add all the total numbers together and you will
find out how much water you used in one week.

Step 9: How much water does your family use?

You can ask your family to do this project with you. Each person can fill in one water use table
each day. Add each persons use for one day and you will find out how much water your family
used that day. You can also find out how much water your family uses in a week.
