Depiction of Trauma of Rape in Mantos Stories

The word Rape is the horrifying act which breaks the person mentally. The existence of rape
has been in our society since the human origin. There are many mythological stories from all
over the world which depict the heinous act of rape be it Indra-Ahilya, Zues-Alcmena, Hera-
Zues, Medua-Poseidon etc.

When India was attacked by foreign invaders, they tried to assault women. History witnesses that
many women had to give up their lives to save from the rapists. The inequality in society has
been also one of the reasons for this kind of crime. Landlord felt at ease to rape with their
servants. Though, high class people hated lower class people so much that even touching was
like a taboo. But, these hypocrites never felt ashamed to sleep with women of downtrodden.

During partition, the whole country suffered because of displacement. Many writers have
depicted the picture of partition. But, in a true sense, Saadat Hasan Manto has portrayed the
horror picture of it. Stories like Kali Salwar, Open it (Khol Do), Toba Tek Singh etc. The paper
aims to depict the trauma of rape and assault in Mantos stories.
