0 BACKGROUND OF FACULTY OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

(FKAAS) BUILDING

Universiti Tun Hussein Onn was established on 16 September 1993 while The Faculty
of Civil and Environmental Engineering which is known as FKAAS was established on May
1 in 2004. This faculty is the result of the combination of two faculties. The two faculties are
Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Construction and Environmental
Engineering Technology. The Department of Civil Engineering has been in existence since
September 13, 1993 when Pusat Latihan Staf Politeknik (PLSP) was established. The
Department of Construction and Environmental Engineering Technology was established on
September 30, 2000 when Institut Teknologi Tun Hussein Onn (ITTHO) was upgraded to Kolej
Universiti Teknologi Tun Hussein Onn (KUiTTHO), and later to Universiti Tun Hussein Onn
Malaysia (UTHM).

As to complete this project, we decided to choose Faculty of Civil and Environmental

Engineering as our study. We choose this building because it has a complete reference on
building operation system such as lift. On the ground floor at north tower there is a lift that is
used for educational purpose and we use that lift which is categorised as gear lift as our study.
We are able to see all the internal components of a lift. Other than that, we also decided to
choose this building because it is the highest building in UTHM. This building has two tower
separately which consist of nine floors (39.9m) in total respectively.

This building located at Jalan Delta 1/3, 86400 Parit Raja, Johor, Malaysia It is place
near the Faculty of Technical and Vocational. This building is divided into several part such as
South tower, North tower, MA, MB and MC which are mainly the lecturers room. The main
office of FKAAS is located near the South tower which is known as admin building. This
building do not have much lectures room but this building occupied with the lab. The laboratory
that are provided is concrete laboratory, the lab environment (environment), laboratory of
geology, geotechnical laboratory, highway laboratory, hydraulics laboratory, and more. These
laboratories are mainly for educational purpose. Other facilities that can be found in this
building is cafeteria and parking lot.
 Other than that, this building are occupies with all the basic requirement for a building
in terms of mechanical and electrical aspect. In term of mechanical system, this building is
occupies with heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) to provide thermal comfort
and acceptable indoor air quality, Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
networks, site utilities such as water drainage, plumbing (water distribution, sanitary facilities),
fire protection (fire and smoke detector use to detect smoke during fire, water supply and
automatic sprinkle).

While in terms of electrical system, this building occupies with lighting which consist
of interior, exterior and also the emergency lighting that known as device that switches on
automatically when a building experiences a power outage. For the auxiliary or support system,
this building has a complete fire alarm, security system, telephone and internet signal. Other
than that, as in building operation system, this has transportation such as lift and stairs. This
transportation is needed in order to enable people move vertically from one place to another or
in others words are enable people to move from one floor to another.
