When Steven Spielberg was a child, he was obsessed with fears. He feared darkness.
He feared there were unearthly creatures hiding under his bed. He feared there were monsters
in his closet.
As he became older, he became very curious about the world around him. He
remembered one night when his father woke him up, took him to a hill at 3 am to watch a
meteor shower. Steven thought it was extraordinary. He wanted to know who put those points
of light up in the sky. He also became interested in flying saucers. He imagined what it would
be like to see someone from a flying saucer.
When Steven was about 12 years, his father gave him a 8 mm cine camera. It opened
the door to his fantasy world. It gave him the escape from school and the bullies who scared
him. He began to make movies. His first movie was Firelight, a sci-fi movie about lights in
the sky. He spent US$500 to make the movie. Then, he invited friends, relatives and
neighbours to watch the movie. He collected US$600. He was 16.
In 1967, Stevens movies caught the eye of Dennis Hoffman, a millionaire. Hoffman
paid Steven US$10 000 to make a short film titled Amblin. It was a story of two teenage
hitch hikers. It impressed the bosses at Universal Studios and he was hired. Here he learned
all he could about directing movies. Then, came his first major break. It was Jaws. Jaws
was an experiment in terror and it was a nightmare to shoot. The budget kept on growing and
the days increased. It drove everyone crazy.

Samuel and his family chose a homestay at a Malay village when they holidayed in
Kedah. The festivities began upon their arrival. Along with several other families, they were
warmly welcomed. A few men played the kompang while several young boys performed
silat as they walked into the village.
Then, the families were introduced to their foster families. After that, they were led
to a shady area near a river. Food was already laid out on several mats. After a hearty meal,
Samuel and his family went to their foster familys house.
The following day, Samuel woke up early. He went outside to look at the river. Some
villagers were out in their boats. Samuel hoped he would get to try that. After breakfast, the
family were taught how to weave mats and baskets.
Just before 11.30 a.m., Samuel and the other families went to a paddy field. There, a
villager showed them how to catch a duck. Then, he invited them to join him. With so many
people in the field, it soon became a muddy mess. Since everyone spend more time having
fun trying to get unstuck from the mud, no ducks were caught.
