Problem sheet #1 25.07.2017

1. If the received power at a reference distance d0 = 1 km is 1 microwatt, find the received power at distance
d = 10 km for (i) free space model (ii) model with path loss exponent 3 and (iii) two-ray ground
reflection using the exact and approximate expressions. Assume f = 900 MHz, ht = 40 m, hr = 3 m, Gt = Gr
= 0 dB.
2. Find the critical distance under the two path model for a large macro cell in a suburban area with base
station mounted on a tower or building with ht=20 meters; hr=3 meters; f=2GHz.
3. For the two ray model with transmitter-receiver separation d=100m, ht=10 meters; hr=2 meters; find the
delay spread between two signals.
4. Consider the combined path loss-shadowing model. A transmitter provides 15 Watts to an antenna having
gain 12dB. The receiver antenna has a gain of 3dB and the receiver bandwidth is 30 kHz. Determine the
maximum separation between transmitter and receiver that will ensure a minimum received power of -
101 dBm for 95% of the time (Assume: Path loss exponent = 4; Carrier frequency = 1800 MHz; Standard
deviation of log normal shadowing = 8dB; and d 0 = 1 km).
5. Consider a cellular system where the received power is distributed according to a log-normal probability
distribution with mean dB and standard deviation dB. Assume that the received power must be
above 10dBm for acceptable performance. For 4dBm , what value of is required such that the
outage probability is less than 1%.
6. Consider the uplink of a GSM system, given GSM requires an S/N of 11 dB. Assume a maximum mobile
transmit power of 1.0 W (30 dBm), 2.15 dB antenna gain at the mobile, and 14.5 dB gain at the BS.
Assume path loss given by the urban area Hata model, with fc = 850 MHz, BS antenna height of 30 meters,
mobile height of 1 meter. Assume F = 3 dB and that the system is noise-limited. What is the maximum
range of the link?
7. Consider a cellular system operating at 900 MHz where propagation follows free space path loss with
variations about this path from log-normal shadowing with = 6 dB. Suppose that for acceptable voice
quality a signal-to-noise power ratio of 15 dB is required at the mobile. Assume the base station transmits
at 1 W and its antenna has a 3 dB gain. There is no antenna gain at the mobile and the receiver noise in
the bandwidth of interest is -40 dBm. Find the maximum cell size so that a mobile on the cell boundary
will have acceptable voice quality 90% of the time.
8. Consider a channel with impulse response:
c( , t ) ( ) 0.5 ( 10 sec) 0.5 ( 40 sec) .
i. Is the channel time varying or time invariant? Explain.
ii. For what data rates does a BPSK signal sent over this channel experience ISI?
9. Let be normal with mean and variance (all quantities in dB). Define = 10
. Find the PDF,
mean and variance of .
10. The signal transmitted by a Base Station has a power of 1 mW at a distance of 1 m from the transmitter.
Measurements have shown that the propagation exponent for the path loss is n=3 up to a distance of 1
km and n=4 beyond that. For adequate signal quality, a signal to noise ratio of at least 15 dB is required.
Find the maximum cell radius if an AMPS receiver with bandwidth 30 kHz and total noise figure (including
the antenna) F=6 dB is used and (a) there is no shadowing, and (b) quality objective is to be met with
probability 99% in the presence of log-normal shadowing with dB.
11. The power delay profile of a wireless channel is given by P ( ) P0 e , 0 . Determine the average
delay and rms delay spread for this channel.
1
12. The power delay profile for a wideband channel is given as Ac ( ) e / Tm mW ; 0 where,
Tm
Tm 1mSec . What are the values for mean Tm and rms Tm delay spread. What is the coherence
bandwidth?
