Instructions for Participation in Research Experiments (Fall 2017)

As part of your course requirement, students enrolled in marketing classes are expected to earn research
credit. This can be done by participating in research experiments (procedure described below) or
completing research assignments that will be available from the Marketing Department Webpage
(Normally speaking, it is available 1 week before the last day of this term classes).

MARK2120 students are required to participate in 3 experiments OR complete 3 assignments.

Students enrolled in other marketing courses (MARK3220, MARK3420, MARK3430, MARK3470,
MARK3510, MARK3520 or MARK4290D) are required to participate in 2 experiments OR
complete 2 assignments per course.

Note: The maximum that each student is required to do is 4 experiments/assignments. Thus, if you are
enrolled in three marketing courses, you do NOT have to do 6 experiments or 6 assignments.

IMPORTANT NOTE
To login to markexpt, use your ITSC login name.
If you have forgotten your password, please read point 1.1 below.

This handout gives you information about how to sign up for experiments.

1. YOUR ACCOUNT AND LOGIN PAGE (Figure 1)

If you are a new markexpt user, an account will be created for you once the add/drop period is over.
You will be assigned a login name (user ID) and a default password.
You will receive this account information by email. The email will come from the administrators
email address (markexpt@ust.hk), so be sure to configure your junk mail filters to allow email from
that address.
When you receive this email, go to the following URL: https://usthk-markexpt.sona-systems.com
and login using the login name and default password you have been given.

1.1 Other features on Login Page: Retrieving a Lost Password

If you have forgotten your password, then you may choose to have your password emailed to you.

You will see a button on the front login page (on the right).

P.1
1.2 Email Address
Email notification is sent to you when you sign up for studies, cancel studies and when you receive
credit. Your email address is also displayed to the researcher when they view who has signed up
for their study, in the event they need to contact you.

2. DESCRIPTION OF THE MAIN MENU (Figure 2)

After you login, you will see the main menu. This menu has six components: Study Sign-up, My Schedule
& Credits, My Profile, Frequently Asked Questions, Credits Overview, and Upcoming Appointments.

2.1 Study Sign-Up

When you click on , you will see a list of studies. A brief

description of each study will be given as well as any special requirements that may restrict your eligibility
to participate in the study.

Studies that currently have available participation times (timeslots) will have TIMESLOTS
AVAILABLE listed on the left (next to the name of the study). If no studies have available timeslots,
you may want to logon to the system later to see if new timeslots or studies have been added.
You can also select a specific date and view studies that have available timeslots on that date (see
date option on top of screen shown in Figure 3).
To view more information about a study, click on the name of the study.

Signing Up For Studies

You will see a list of any special restrictions or eligibility requirements, as well as a contact person
if you have questions about the study (see Figure 4).
Some restrictions are automatically enforced by the system while some are not. Example, if you
have participated in the study before, you cannot sign up for it again. This is automatically
enforced. Other restrictions could include Cantonese speaker only. This type of restriction may
let you sign up but if you do not speak Cantonese, and show up at the study, you will likely not
receive credit for the study, and could face a penalty.
P.3
Some studies are two-part studies (for example, you are asked to come for a 30-min session on
Monday and another 30-min session on Friday), where you must sign up for both parts of the
study at once. These studies will be clearly marked.
Once you have determined you meet all the requirements, click on

and you will see a list of available timeslots. Choose a

timeslot that is convenient for you, and click Sign Up (see Figure 5).

Figure 5 - Study Timeslots

After you click Sign Up, you will see information displayed confirming the time and location of the
study you plan to participate in.
You will receive an email confirmation as well. You are now signed up for the study.

2.2 My Schedule & Credits

This option allows you to cancel sign-ups and check how

many credits you have accumulated. Also, please dont
send e-mail to markexpt@ust.hk for questions about when
the studies will be posted etc., because this information is not
available to markexpt computer system administrator and
depends on when individual faculty members run studies. We
can only assure you that in any given semester there will be
sufficient studies for all students.
When you click on this option, you will see listed all the
studies you have signed up for, as well as those you have
completed (see figure 6).
Studies you have signed up for that you are allowed to
cancel will have a Cancel button next to them. There is a
time limit. You can only cancel a sign-up 8 hours before the
study is to occur. This restriction is listed at the bottom of the
block.

P.4
Once you click Cancel to cancel your sign-up, you will see a confirmation page (see figure 7).
Click Yes to cancel your sign-up, and the sign-up will be cancelled immediately.
If you wish to cancel your sign-up for a two-part study, you should do so by canceling your sign-up
for the first part, then the second part will automatically be cancelled. However, the cancellation is
not effective if you only cancel your sign-up for the second part.

Tracking Your Progress (see Figure 6)

P.5
When you view this page, you will see at the top a list of the number of credits you are required to
earn, and how many you have earned so far.
Below that, if you have signed up for any studies, those are listed as well. In the list of studies, you
will see information about your credit status.
If you failed to appear for a study, it is possible you were assessed a penalty. That will be displayed
in your progress, and the penalty (if assessed) will block you from signing-up for a study for one
week. Next to each credit or penalty, you can also see any comments the researcher left regarding
the study and your credit for it.
Non-study credit is also listed, when applicable.

Reassigning Credits
If you belong to multiple courses, you may reassign a credit from one course to another. To do this,

simply use the Reassign link that appears when you view your progress. The link
appears under the course entry for each item in your progress listing.

2.3 My profile

2.4 Frequently Asked Questions

There is a list of FAQ posted here. It is highly recommend that you view this section before you send out
any enquiry to us.

3. Logging out
When you are done using the system, choose Log Out from the toolbar on the top right to log out.
You are now logged out. It is always a good security measure to close all your browser windows as
