CQI(ChannelQualityIndication)reportisanimportantelementofLTEandhassignificantimpactonthesystem
performance.TherearetwotypesofCQIreportinLTE:periodicandaperiodic.TheperiodicCQIreportiscarriedby
PUCCH.ButiftheUEneedstosendULdatainthesamesubframeasthescheduledperiodicCQIreport,theperiodic
CQIreportwillusethePUSCH,togetherwithULdatatransmission.ThisisbecauseaUEcan'ttransmitonboth
PUCCHandPUSCHsimultaneously.Inthiscase,theperiodicPUCCHresourcewillbeidle.SinceperiodicCQI
reportbringsinthe"alwayson"signalingoverhead,thereportgranularityisrelativelyrough.Inordertogetmoredetail
CQIreport,theeNBcantriggeraperiodicCQIreportwhenneeded.TheaperiodicCQIreportistransmittedonPUSCH,
togetherwithULdataoralone.

ThegranularityofCQIreportcanbedividedintothreelevels:wideband,UEselectedsubband,andhigherlayer
configuredsubband.ThewidebandreportprovidesoneCQIvaluefortheentiredownlinksystembandwidth.TheUE
selectedsubbandCQIreportdividesthesystembandwidthintomultiplesubbands,selectsasetofpreferredsubbands
(thebestMsubbands),thenreportsoneCQIvalueforthewidebandandonedifferentialCQIvaluefortheset(assume
transmissiononlyovertheselectedMsubbands).Thehigherlayerconfiguredsubbandreportprovidesthehighest
granularity.Itdividestheentiresystembandwidthintomultiplesubbands,thenreportsonewidebandCQIvalueand
multipledifferentialCQIvalues,oneforeachsubband.

IfclosedloopMIMOisused,PMI(PrecodingMatrixIndicator)andRI(RankIndication)arealsoreported.PMI
indicatesthecodebook(preagreedparameters)theeNBshouldusefordatatransmissionovermultipleantennas
basedontheevaluationofreceivedreferencesignal.RIindicatesthenumberoftransmissionlayersthattheUEcan
distinguish.SpatialmultiplexingcanbesupportedonlywhenRI>1.Forspatialmultiplexing,CQIisreportedbasedon
percodeword.ThemaximumnumberofcodewordinLTEistwo.

ThereareseventransmissionmodesinLTE,eachoneiscorrespondingtocertainmultipleantennatechniques.For
eachtransmissionmode,certaincombinationofCQIreportisdefinedinthespecs,basedonperiodic/aperiodic,
wideband/UEselectedsubband/higherlayerconfiguredsubband,NoPMI/singlePMI/multiplePMI.SinceRIchanges
slowerthanCQI/PMI,itisreportedwithalongerintervalonperiodicreport.ItisreportedtogetherwithCQI/PMIon
aperiodicreportsincetheresourceonPUSCHislesslimited.
