Homework #3 Machine Design Fall 2017

1. The cantilever beam shown below made of two steel angles (80 x 80 x 10 mm). The cross-section of this
beam is shown below. Find the max stress in the beam as well as the deflection at B using the
superposition principle. The properties for structural steel equal leg angles are given in the table below.
Hint: Remember that there are two angles that make up the cross-section of the beam.

2. An aluminum cantilever beam that has a tubular cross-section with outer diameter of 3.25 inches and
inner diameter of 2.75 inches is shown below. The beam is loaded as shown in the figure. Apply the
principle of superposition using the beam tables in Appendix B of your book to solve for the slope of the
beam in radians at point A.

3. A cantilever beam fixed at A has a concentrated moment at A and concentrated forces F and R2 at C
and B. Use the superposition principle to determine the deflection equations in regions AB and BC in terms
of variables. Use the beam tables provided below.

4. Complete problem 4-23 first using Figure P4-11(a). Use the values from row c of the table.

5. A rectangular metal sign with 24 kg mass is attached to a solid cylindrical horizontal pole that is fixed
from one end to a wall. Two identical leather straps with given equal dimensions are used to hang the
sign on the pole. A spherical hard object free falls from 1 m height and hits the pole right between the
straps. The impact causes the pole to deflect 2 mm downwards. Find the impact force caused by the falling
object (taken as a point load), draw the free body diagram and find the slope of the pole (in degrees) at
the point where the object hits it using superposition. Assume the straps have no weight and metal sign
is homogeneous (i.e. weight is distributed equally between the width of each strap). Use the Appendix B
to solve the problem. You can ignore the weight of the pole when calculating the slope.
