ARTICLE: Article for School Magazine / Newsletter

In spite of governments clear call to students to study English well, many

students still show very little interest in studying the language. As Chairperson
of the English Language Society, you are going to try to persuade the students
to study the language by writing an article in the school newsletter. In the
article you have to tell the students the importance of studying the language.
Your article is given in the point form below:
will help you to further your studies
will help you to get a job
will help you in your job
will help you in your travels
will help you to enjoy many interesting programmes in television
will help you to appreciate many of the worlds most beautiful literary works
The Importance of Studying English
It is a big concerned for teenagers nowadays as they are unaware of
the importance of English language as they tend to ignore to learn the language.
Students attitude towards the language is also crucial to make sure that these
teenagers can face the future world better by learning English language as it is
an international language.

Although the government has repeatedly told us of the importance of

English, many students are still not bothered about studying it seriously. There
is also a campaign that still on to make all the Malaysian becomes a better
English learner, which is Enhance Proficiency in Bahasa Malaysia, Strengthen
the English. English is the most important and the most useful language in the
world today. There are many reasons why you should study the language
properly.

First and foremost, English will definitely help you a lot when you want
to further studies. Almost all books at university are written in English in all
subjects. Plus, it is a compulsory for any candidate to pass English with credit
before entering any universities. So, if you are poor in English, you will blow you
chance for better education or worse, you are going to have a big problem
studying at university.

The second reason why you have to study English well is that it will help
you to get a job. When you go for a job interview, the interviewer will surely
talk to you in English. The first impression you should give in order to success
and have the job is, to respond in English fluently. Your chances of getting the
job are very slim if you stutter while interviewing.

A good command in of English will also help you greatly in your job. If
the company you work is actively involved in international trade, you have to
speak to prospective customers in English. Miscommunication might occur if your
English is bad. And this will put your company at risk and you will likely be
dismissed if this happen.

Good English will also help you a lot when you travel. Every country in the
world studies English. Even the roadside stall-holders in China speak fairly good
English! At least some of the people you meet on your travels in other countries
can understand English. The language is certainly practical when you are lost in
your trip. Communication problem will not happen if you can converse well in
English. Inevitably, English is one of the languages used in any airport in the
world in making announcement. Knowing English well, therefore, make travelling
overseas easier.

Besides all these, entertainment is one of the major advantages you will
experience if you good in English. You will enjoy televisions best programmes.
We must admit that many of the best programmes are produced by the
Americans and British companies. High self confidence influenced by the
programmes will indirect inculcate in yourself when you are fluent in the
language. Quality time is worthily spent if you understand and enjoy the
programmes.

Based from all the above elaboration, I hope that students will see the
importance and realise how importance the language is for their own future.
Although it is a second language in our country, it is now a main language all over
the world.

DIRECTED: REPORT Report to Principal

You are very disappointed by the conditions and services provided by your
school canteen. You decide to write a report to inform your school principal
about the poor conditions and services of the canteen. These would include:
insufficient table and benches
food and drinks not covered
too little food counters
dirty and clogged drains smelly
food expensive and lacks variety
inadequate food late comers have nothing to buy, to eat
cold food not fresh
rude canteen workers

Report about the School Canteen

I am writing this report is to draw your attention regarding the school
canteen. Many of the students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Permata are
unhappy about the conditions at the school canteen. There were lots of
complaints regarding this issue.

In the first place, there are insufficient tables and benches.

Our school has a student population of over 1 000. There is only one period of
recess time for all forms. More than 80 per cent of the students go to the
canteen during recess to buy food and drinks. Unfortunately, there are only
about twenty-five tables and fifty benches which can accommodate less than
half the number of students. As a result, many students have to stand while
eating.
The food sold at the canteen not only expensive but lacks of variety.
The menu is the same every day. For the past five years, ever since the present
canteen management took over, students go back to the same food.

The hygiene and preparation of food leave a lot to be desired. The food
and drinks are not covered. They way canteen attendants dress speak volume
about hygiene. With their lackadaisical attitude, the food they sell would one
way or the other become contaminated.

My fourth complaint about the canteen pertains to the etiquette of the

canteen workers. They are rude and arrogant. They often shout at students.
The students are always on the receiving end of their bad moods.

We hope that conditions at the canteen will improve. The canteen should
provide better amenities. There should also be a different menu everyday so
that students will not have to taste the same food day in and day out.
Cleanliness should be given top priority.

We hope that you will look into our complaints and take steps to remedy
the situation. The students are prepared to boycott the canteen if their
complaints go unheeded.

Benefit of Reading

Reading is probably one of the most beneficial and feasible activities that a man
can do. It is through reading that a person is going to be able to discover new
ideas, concepts, places, and people. Some people even describe reading as a
journey that starts as the opening of a page, and finishes as the last page is
turned. The reason why reading is so important is because reading is relaxing to
our mind and soul; it is a way for children to reach out to the world, and it
improves our thinking process.

The first reason why reading is so beneficial in our lives is that a book furnishes
relaxation to our mind and soul. There is something about stopping to focus on
words during reading that is instantly relaxing. Maybe it is just staying still in a
chair, something that does not seem to happen often in our lives. Stress is a
major concern for a lot of people because of the day to day labor. Even if we
have a stressful day, a book can easily distract us from our own problems.
Reading has ability to calm us down, and dispense peace.

The second reason why reading is so beneficial in our lives is that reading is
relaxing, and it is also a way for children to reach out to the world. Reading
should be encouraged among children at an early age. This is significant because
there are numerous benefits that children can dilate from reading. Aside from
mushrooming qualities and senses, reading also reports knowledge and
information to their brains. It is no secret that reading increases childrens
vocabulary and spelling more than talking or direct teaching. Reading forces us
to look at words that we might not have seen or heard in our lives. In fact,
languages in childrens books are likely to be more complicated than their
average conversation. A large number of children who read are articulate while
the others are not, As a man thinks, so shall he become. (The Bible)

The third reason why reading is so beneficial is that reading improves our
thinking process. Reading books require readers to think and imagine about
different details in the book such as characters and plot; this provides us to
improve our thinking process. Repeating a habit of reading and persuading the
brain to be more buoyant and absorb more information will give us a great
beneficial. It also obliges readers to focus on what they are reading for long
periods. Unlike magazines, internet posts or e-mails that might contain small
pieces of information, books tell the whole story. Since the readers must
concentrate in order to read, they will improve their concentration, thinking
abilities, and plunge them into their brains.
Everyone knows that a person who reads will be successful and a person who
doesnt will either not do so well than others or eventually fail in life. If we want
to be known as a profound person instead of being a delinquent one who
begrudges the successful person, we must start changing our habits. No
entertainment is so cheap as reading, or any pleasures so lasting. (Montagu),
reading may look very prickly outside but if we actually remove the husk, it is
our companion that assists us to go through our livings. It will not only refresh
our mind and soul but it will give us a great outlook towards life.

The Poor Conditions And Services By The Library

My name is Ahmad Bin Mohd. Ali. I am very unhappy with the conditions
and services provided by our school library. This is a serious matter and should
be solved as soon as possible.
First of all, the librarians are very rude. They often scold us when we
return the books late although we pay the fine. It is hard to see them smile. So
I hope you will do something about this.
There is insufficient place to sit and read. Our school has about 1000
students. The library is too small. We have to stand and sit outside the library
along the corridor to read books or newspaper.
Besides, the library has old furniture. The chairs are all rusty and some
even broken. The tables are shaking and might fall one day. The racks are very
old. We are afraid if would fall anytime. I request the school to buy new
furniture.
Apart from that, our library is filled with old and torn books, which are
not suitable for the students. Some of us have asked the teacher in charge to
buy new books but he said the library has financial problems.
Other than that, the media equipment is faulty. The students cannot
access computers anytime they want. The television cannot be switched on. We
hope that the school will buy a new television or repair the old one.
Finally, the students are not satisfied with the borrowing period, which
is too short. We can only borrow the reference books for two days. We can
borrow the story books for one week. We hope the library would expand the
borrowing period. This is all I would like to complain about. I hope you will look
into this matter as soon as possible.

The Manager,
Seasons Restaurant,
Jalan Simpang Ampat,

Dear Sir,

Complaint About Unsatisfactory Food And Restaurant Service

I wish to express my dissatisfaction about the food and service at your

established and well-known restaurant. On behalf of my family, I would like to
raise a few points regarding this matter. My family and I had dinner at your
restaurant on 08 September 2013 to celebrate my mothers 50th birthday. We
expected to have a great time at your seafood restaurant but unfortunately we
did not.

2. Your waiters treated us rudely and inconsiderately. We had to wait for

about half an hour before we could order any food. The waiter spoke to us
rudelywhilst taking the orders. In fact, he scolded my mother who wanted to
have a cup of tea without sugar. He claimed that the restaurant does not serve
such a drink. For your information, my mother has diabetes and is trying to
avoid taking sugary food and drinks.

3. The poorly cooked food was also unsatisfactory. We were surprised to find
out that the roast chicken and fish that we had ordered were still raw and
inedible. The mushroom soup tasted a bit sour and the fried prawn was
overcooked. We made a complaint about the food to your waiters and cooks but
no further action was taken.

4. Besides, the poorly served food we also felt uncomfortable with the dirty
andunhygienic conditions at your restaurant. The food was greasy. There were
some cats wandering searching for food. These bad conditions are harmful as
they might get food poisoning and other health problems.
5. I nearly lost RM57 as a result of the wrongly totalled bill I was given. It
was my sister who noticed the unreasonable price of the food. Then, we
recounted the bill and found that out it was wrongly calculated. The total was
supposed to be RM120 but the calculation made by the cashier showed RM177.

6. Another problem that spoiled our evening was the noisy surroundings,
especially the yelling of waiters and waitresses calling names and taking orders
from the customers. Besides this, the loud music and noise coming from the
kitchen also contributed to this unsatisfactory situation. What more
disappointing were the defective fans and air-conditioners? The weather was
very humid and there were a lot of people in the restaurant. There are also old
anduncomfortable furniture in your restaurant.

7. Hereby, I would like to make suggestions to help you solve these problems.
First of all, I suggest that you look at your restaurant and make sure no more
cats and other stray animals are on your premise. You should also train your
waiters and cooks to provide good service and food to customers. It would be
better to use a calculator to avoid mistakes in totalling the bill. You need to
repair the defective fans and air-conditioners immediately. Last but not least,
cleanliness should be maintained in all parts of your restaurant. I hope that you
will look into these complaints and take immediate actions. It is very important
to remember that The Better The Service, The Better The Business.

Thanking you in advance for your co-operation.

Yours faithfully,
Rodziana

Answer: Example 3
A very good morning I bid to the principal, Pn. Aqilah binti Ahmad, senior
assistants, teachers and friends.

I am Izzairy bin Azmie, proudly standing here as the President of the

Environmental Club, and am really honoured to be given this opportunity to talk
to all of you today. In conjunction with the Love your Environment campaign, I
would like to talk about the activities to be carried out to show that we
love our environment.

As students, it is our responsibility to keep our environment clean. We

play a vital role in protecting our environment. A lot of waste can be reused such
as bottles, cans, and newspapers. Therefore, every morning we will go around
the school compound and collect all waste materials. Then we must separate
these waste products in different garbage bags. These garbage bags will then
be sent to Recycling Centre.

The next activity is collecting old newspapers from our home. You are
requested to collect old newspapers and bring them to school every morning.
The collection centre will be the school canteen. There will be someone from the
club who will be in charge of the collection. Please make sure that you tie the
newspapers into bundles before handing them in.

Another activity that will be held is the poster competition. Anyone

interested must register with Lim May May from Form 5 Mulia. The closing date
of submission is the 10th March 2011. The theme of the posters must follow the
theme of our campaign. The first prize winner will get a book voucher of
RM200, the second prize winner will get a book voucher of RM100, and the third
prize winner will receive a book voucher of RM50.
Finally, I wish to give a word of reminder to you all. Please do not litter.
We must avoid the habit of throwing rubbish indiscriminately. We must always
remember that a cleaner environment would ensure a happier and healthier life.
I would like to make an appeal for full cooperation from all parties to make this
campaign a success. With that, thank you.
