HOW IT ALL STARTED
• Wendy Numata, Vicki Perkins and Annette Smissen are
three educators that saw a need for our students to
become more personally involved with the standards and
their success.

• The idea of standards was a concept unknown to most of

our students; they didn’t understand what standards
were and how they pertained to them.

• We strongly believe that if your students have ownership

of their education it will be more meaningful to them.

• We wanted an easy way to monitor the specific needs and

progress of each student.

And the Meeting Mastery Name Tag ©

• With the Meeting Mastery Name Tag©, the standards
become a part of your student’s daily classroom
environment.

• Students are excited to get their Meeting Mastery

Name Tag© stamped and work hard to master the
various standards that are on their name tag.

• We have seen a huge success within our classrooms and

made huge growth on our CST scores.

• We know you will see the excitement with your students

that we have witnessed with our students and share in
our success.
HOW DO THEY WORK
• Each student places their “trimester-created” Meeting Mastery Name
Tag© on their desk at the beginning of each new trimester.
• Their name tag has the 12 standards that need to be mastered
for language arts and math for their specific grade level and
trimester. Let’s take a look at a 3rd grade trimester 2 name tag.

HOW STUDENTS’ PROVE MASTERY
• The teacher has complete control of when to assess students
and what is considered mastery.

– Assessments should be given after standard has been taught and

adequate practice is allowed.
– Mastery should be determined by a score of 80% or higher or a
proficient or advanced score.

• As often as possible throughout the school week, the teacher

administers mastery quizzes for the various standards on the
name tag.
• Mastery quizzes can consist of many different
assessments, many you already have access to.

• Possible ways to assess students for mastery are:

already made quizzes from print sources, like the
“Meeting Mastery” Quiz books, assessments from
text books, district assessments, teacher created
quizzes and there are many resources online too.

The Backside of the Name Tag
Some Questions You May Have
?
How exactly can I use the name tags in my
classroom?
• Most teachers use the name tags along the side of
their district’s adopted textbooks.

– They teach a lesson, allow some time for practice and

then administer a mastery quiz. If the student passes the
quiz with 80% or more they have completed 1 quiz of
mastery. The student needs to complete 2 quizzes with
mastery in order to earn a stamp on their name tag.

– There is not any exact way of implementing this in your

classroom. You will find what works for you.
Here is one teachers way of implementing it within the classroom.
~I have the Gate cluster class, so I love how the name tags allow my students to
accelerate in the curriculum. As soon as they feel they are ready to take a quiz I let
them. If they pass it with 85% then I let them take a second quiz, if they pass that one,
then they earn their stamp. I keep a file in my class with all the quizzes in order by
trimester and standard. If a student does not pass the first quiz then they have to wait
to quiz until I have taught that standard. My mastery quizzes become May Do’s. I use
the giant name tag on my board to keep track of what standards I have taught, by
placing a sticky note on them. The students know that if the standard has a sticky note
they can quiz on it.

How do I get the different tests for all the
various standards?
• You have more resources than you think.
• Remember all those teacher manuals that come with your district adopted
curriculum.
• All those teacher books you have bought.
• Get them out and look through them.
– Theme tests
– District post assessments
– Teacher books and worksheets
– School computer lab software often has tests for the students.
– Create your own, a mastery quiz could be a simple 5-10 problem quiz you put on
the overhead.
• Purchase our Meeting Mastery Quiz books.
– The books are standard based and made to use with the Meeting Mastery Name Tags©.
– Each grade level book is set up with 3 quizzes for each standard in each of the three
trimesters. The math book contains 108+ quizzes. Quizzes are designed for each
trimester of the 12 mastery standards.

can be used as May Do’s.
How can I use the name tags within my classroom?

• We have created a classroom management tool we

call Meeting Mastery bags.
• Once the students have mastered a standard they get
a stamp on their name tag, but they also receive a
colored dot sticker that we have written the standard
on that they mastered.
• The students place their colored dot sticker on their
bag that is displayed on the wall in the class.
– We use brown and yellow construction paper to
create rectangle shaped bags for each student.
• Once the student has 6 colored dot stickers on their
bag we give them a snack size bag of M&M® candies.
• The students love it and can’t wait to master all the
standards on their name tag.
• This also a great way for you, parents and guests that
come in your classroom to see what standards the
students have mastered.
Kids Love it and it Looks Great
Can I use the Meeting Mastery Name Tags©
assessments in my grade book?
•Yes, you can use any assessment you give a student as a
grade.

•We have set up our grade books by standards.

•Our district report cards are also set up by standards. This

makes it very easy to determine grades at the end of each
trimester.

•We have found that we have many different grades now for
each student and it makes for a more accurate overall grade
for the student.
How did you determine which standards to
choose for mastery?

• We looked at all the standards that needed to be taught for

each grade level.
– Using the California standards framework.
• We looked at which standards are heavily assessed on the
CST.
• We took into account our own personal knowledge about the
grade level or sought out experts in those grades.
• We put all this together and determined 12 standards for each
of the 3 trimesters that needed to be mastered by the students.
• Much time and thought has been put into determining which
standards to include on each Meeting Mastery Name Tag©.
How can I get the Meeting Mastery Name Tags©?
