Introduccin
Arqueologa e Historia
As, aunque el mundo moderno es caracterizado por una economa nica, que es
colonial, internacional y en expansin (Orser 1996: 83) y el arquelogo estudia artefactos que
son commodities (Orser & Fagan 1994: 83), mercancas vueltas al cambio comercial, ese
mundo complexo inclua realidades ligadas solo indiretamente al capitalismo. Dos ejemplos
presentes en ponncias en India y en los libros de Orser pueden servir de ejemplo de eso: la
cultura material de los cimarrones, en Palmares (Rowlands 1994; Allen 1995; Funari 1995) y la
cultura material de los africanos en esclavitud en el sur de Estados Unidos (Orser 1966: 117-
123). En lo que se refiere a esta ltima, el estudio de la llamada cermica Colono ware, que
constituye un 80 a 90 por ciento de toda cermica hallada en sitios de esclavos en el siglo XVIII
(Singleton 1991: 161) muestra que se trata de una produccin que, ms que volver a
costumbres africanas o indgenas, conotava un sistema de resistencia y diversidad cultural que
quiere ser diferente de la cultura dominante europea (Orser 1996: 121). Los esclavos no se
preocupaban tanto con ser africanos o americanos, o con pertenecer a grupos tnicos
especficos, sino que les gustava mostrarse diferentes de los opresores (Hall 1992: 385).
Tal vez el principal progreso en la Arqueologa Histrica de los tres pases sea
observado en la atencin cresciente al pueblo comn. La administracin del patrimonio, por
mucho tiempo en manos de arquitectos preocupados solo con los edificios de la lite, est
ahora bajo la crtica de arquelogos e historiadores (e.g. Tamanini 1995). La etnicidad y la
identidad nacional estn tambin en el centro de inters de diferentes monografas sobre
Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, Colonial del Sacramento, Misiones jesuticas, cimarrones. Como
estamos en la periferia del mundo occidental, estamos acostumbrados a mezclar puntos de
vista que, en otros sitios, se mantienen separados. Thomas C. Petterson (1989: 556) ha
propuesto que es posible distinguir tres tipos de Arqueologa postprocesual: 1. una rama que
tiene como origen R. Collinwood y que cita Roland Barthes, Pierre Bourdieu, C. Geertz,
Anthony Giddens y Paul Ricoueur; 2. una corriente que sale de Marx y Foucault; 3. una linea
que se preocupa con la comunicacin y la ideologa y que se inspira en Louis Althusser, Jrgen
Habermas, Mark Leone y Wylie. Otros, como Hienrich Hrke (1989: 409) prefiere oponer la
Arqueologa terica angloamericana a la tradicin alemana, que enfatiza el estudio exhaustivo
y erudito de los detalles. Con todo, no sorprende el hecho que estudiosos argentinos,
brasileos y uruguayos se preocupan sea con teoria, sea con estudio de detalles, y citan al
mismo tiempo Bourdieu, Foucault y Althusser! Esto no quiere decir que son eclcticos, significa
que no ignoran la coexistencia de diferentes puntos de vista (Funari 1989: 64).
La dictadura, aqui como en Europa (Baker 1991: 58-60; Fontes 1992: 219), ha
dificultado, por cierto tiempo, la difusin de nuevas ideas, pero la libertad alentara,
rapidamente, los contactos cientficos, entre ellos el dilogo entre historiadores y arquelogos.
Una pluralidad de opiniones, en una sociedad abierta, significa que diferentes disciplinas
pueden dar diferentes conocimientos, disciplinas, de toda manera, que no pueden ignorar la
existencia de una variedad de puntos de vista. Historiadores y arquelogos viven, en trminos
generales, en ambientes cientficos propios, lo que es el resultado de circunstancias muy
concretas. Como ya mencionado, mientras los historiadores son historiadores, los arquelogos
son antroplogos, bilogos, historiadores de la naturaleza, gelogos, gegrafos y, a veces,
historiadores. El estatuto acadmico de la Arqueologa no est claramente definido y esto
dificulta el dilogo entre historiadores y arquelogos. Este dilogo depende, en la mayora de
las veces, de los esfuerzos de arquelogos que estn, personalmente, en una campo de
frontera. El caso de Gabriela Martn y su papel en el desarrollo de ambas disciplinas en el
nordeste del Brasil es un ejemplo de eso: Martn fue educada como arqueloga clsica, en su
Espaa natal, y estubo encargada de estudiar y publicar importantes cermicas romanas en las
dcadas de 1960 y 1970 (Martn 1968; 1969; 1970; 1971; 1972; 1974; 1975; 1978; 1979; 1981;
1988); en el Brasil, ha estudiado la Arqueologa del nordeste del pas, ha dirigido
investigaciones de postgrado sobre Arqueologa Histrica y ha actuado como consultor de la
CAPES, para todo el pas por lo tanto, para los cursos de postgrado en Historia.
