To develop an optimum learning environment for a student with special needs; Jayden
Wallace Bourne to achieve maximum success
SENSORY
MOVEMENT (VESTIBULAR PROCESSING)
Try to have regular movement breaks during sitting tasks (approx. every 20mins
Opportunities that could be offered to Jayden to meet his sensory needs for movement include:
1. Therabands around chair legs
2. Having a swing
3. Giving him regular opportunities to walk play outside
4. Animal walks from one activity to another
5. Jump on a trampoline
NOTE; Movement that has a rhythmical component (such as a swing) and done at a slower pace
can help to organize and calm the nervous system. Movement that is quick with more variation
in intensity can be alerting
TOUCH PROCESSING
Provide opportunities through the day where Jayden has access to appropriate deep pressure activities
to decrease the need to play rough and seek touch through moving into others space
1. Tight hugs/squeezes or pillow sandwich (gently squish Joshua between a couple of pillows/bean
bags in a fun way)
2. Use the bean bag to sit on or roll under. A bean bag is a natural hug for the body and can help calm.
3. Sensory turtle
4. Fidget toys
5. Sitting in a squish box to read or watch TV. You could even place a heavy blanket over the top of him
in his position.
When you see Jayden starting to build up frustration or anxiety direct him to the bean bag. Praise Jayden
for any attempt to go to the bean bag himself to calm down.
