Wheel Loader
"ecot3" [pronunciation: ekt 3:] is Komatsu's comprehensive technology for ecology & economy of construction
equipment. This ecology & economy technology is to be applied to Komatsu's Tier 3 models to meet EPA Tier 3, EU
Stage 3A and Japan's off-highway special automobile clean air act emissions requirements, which all require a
substantial reduction in not only nitrogen oxide (NOx) but also particulate matter (PM) and hydrocarbon (HC).
Japan's off-highway special automobile clean air act in particular requires exhaust gases to be measured as being
emitted from the operation of engine driven equipment.
Thus, the efficient interaction between the engine and the equipment that performs various tasks is of most importance.
Unlike on-highway automobiles, construction equipment often has to do heavy duty jobs such as digging hard soil, rip
heavy rocks and lift weighty materials and to do so its engine needs to be able to deliver high performance at all times.
This is a peculiar challenge that is added to the development of engines for construction equipment.
The ecot3 technology is made of a number of state of the art technologies in the fields of engine, hydraulics and
electronics combined in a creative manner. This comprehensive technology enables construction machinery to meet
the said emission requirements without compromising fuel efficiency, productivity, or durability.
Komatsu has been developing and manufacturing in house both the construction vehicles and engines: equipment
since 1931 and diesel engines since 1935. Supported by such experience, the ecot3 technology was developed aiming
for preservation of the Earth's environment (Ecology) and the customer's productivity (Economy). What makes us
successful is our strong technological capabilities and power that integrates them into efficient machinery.

HIGH FUEL EFFICIENCY
Electronically-controlled hydrostatic transmission
z The 1 pump, 2 motor system provides high-efficiency and high tractive effort.
Engine power is transmitted hydraulically to the driving wheels.
z Full auto-shifting eliminates any gear shifting and kick-down operation to allow
the operator to concentrate on digging and loading.
z HST provides quick travel response and aggressive drive into the pile.
The variable displacement system automatically adjusts to the tractive effort
demand to provide maximum power and efficiency.
z When high drive torque is needed for digging, climbing, or initial movement,
the pump feeds both motors. This combination makes the loader very
aggressive and quick.
18
HIGH FUEL EFFICIENCY
Electronically-controlled hydrostatic transmission
z As the machine moves and gains traveling speed, the torque demand
decreases and the low-speed motor is effectively removed from the drive
system by a clutch. At this point, the flow is going to the high-speed motor
and the low-speed motor is not causing a drag on this system.
z Under deceleration, the HST system acts as a dynamic brake. The dynamic
brake can even hold the loader in position on most workable slopes.
This can be an advantage in stockpiling and ramp loading.
z An inching pedal gives the operator excellent simultaneous control of travel
and equipment hydraulic speeds. By depressing the inching pedal, drive
pump flow to the motors will decrease, reducing ground speed and allowing
the operator to use the accelerator to increase flow to equipment hydraulics.
Depressing the inching pedal further will activate the service brakes.

temperature.
This minimizes unnecessary waste of
engine power for cooling and reduces fuel
consumption.

23
OPERATION OF HST
Variable traction control system
The tractive effort of the machine, when traveling at
a low speed, can be reduced by using the traction
Traction control switch
control switch. Combined with the function of torque
proportioning or limited slip differentials, this system
exerts the following effects: Control ON
(1) Facilitates operation on soft ground position
where the tires of the machine are
apt to slip.
(2) Eliminates excessive bucket
penetration and reduces tire
slippage during stockpile loading to
improve the work efficiency.
(3) Reduces tire slippage to extend the
life of tires.
Furthermore, the maximum tractive effort
can be adjusted in three stages when the
traction control switch is ON. This allows
the operator to select the optimum
tractive effort for diversified road
conditions.

24
OPERATION OF HST
S-mode for slippery ground conditions
Setting the switch to S-mode allows the Patent
machine to get the optimum driving force Traction control switch
for operations on slippery road surfaces,
like snow-removal on snow covered
surfaces, resulting in reduced tire
slippage and facilitation of the operation. S-mode
position
Unexpected tire slippage on a slippery
road surface is reduced by controlling the
engine speed and HST motor when
traveling at low speeds.
(S-mode is effective only in forward
travel.)

OPERATION OF HST
Max. traction switch
The max. traction switch is located on the work equipment control lever.
When the max. traction switch is at the ON position or S-mode is
selected, pushing this switch cancels the setting of the traction control
temporarily and increases the tractive effort to its 100 % value. Then
pushing the max. traction switch again or operating the F/R lever
returns the tractive effort to the set value automatically. This switch is
useful for operations such as stockpile work where large tractive effort is
required temporarily.

HIGH RELIABILITY & DURABILITY
High rigidity frames
The front and rear frames and the loader linkage have more torsional
rigidity to provide increased resistance to stresses.
The frame and loader linkage are designed to accommodate actual
working loads, and simulated computer testing proves their strength.
Steering angles of 40 give the WA250-6 a high level of maneuverability.
Komatsu components
Komatsu manufactures the
engine, transfer case, and
hydraulic components on this
wheel loader.
Komatsu loaders are
manufactured with an integrated
production system under a strict
quality control system.
39
HIGH RELIABILITY & DURABILITY
Overrun reduction
When the machine descends a moderate slope (six degrees or less),
maximum travel speed is automatically restricted to approximately 38
km/h 24 mph*, for protection against damage to power train
components and brakes, by sensing the travel speed and controlling the
discharge amount of the HST pump and motor.
When the machine descends a steep slope and the travel speed
reaches 36 km/h 22 mph**, the caution lamp lights up to inform the
operator to reduce travel speed.
Note: When the machine descends a steep slope, the use of the brake
is necessary since travel speed can become high.
40
HIGH RELIABILITY & DURABILITY
Sealed wet multi-disc service and parking brakes
Wet multi-disc brakes and a fully sealed hydraulic braking system result
in low maintenance costs and high reliability. There are now two friction
brake discs per wheel for greater braking power. The wet disc service
and parking brakes are sealed and adjustment-free to reduce
contamination, wear, and maintenance. The parking brake is
mechanically operated and will stop output drive to the differentials.

42
HIGH RELIABILITY & DURABILITY
Halogen head lamps
Halogen head lamps with rubber mounts provide high-performance
lighting, long life, and excellent reliability. Repair costs are low since
the halogen bulbs provide long life, and when replacement is required,
only the bulb needs to be replaced, not the entire headlamp assembly.
43
HIGH RELIABILITY & DURABILITY
Cathion electro-deposition primer paint / Powder
coating final paint
Cathion electro-deposition paint is applied as a primer paint and
powder coating is applied as a topcoat to the exterior metal sheet parts.
This process results in a beautiful rust-free machine, even in the most
severe environments. Some external parts are made of plastic
providing long life and high impact resistance.
44
