Catholic Teaching Focus for this lesson

In Year Three, students learn that human beings can express the goodness created in them by God. They
celebrate Jesus for who he is and learn about how Jesus came to help people change. They explore the many ways
in which Jesus calls people to show love through their bodies, and they continue to wonder at bodies and how our
bodies allow us to relate with God and others just as Jesus taught. Students explore ways in which members of
Gods family are called to show love through their bodies.

The focus of this lesson is for students to:
Explore the ways that people use their bodies to show love for God and the ways that people do not use their
bodies to show love for God
Discuss why it is important to use our bodies to show love for God
Identify how we can use our bodies to show love for God in a variety of settings not just at Church
Reflect upon what the world might be like if no one used their bodies to show love for God

Prior Knowledge

Students have completed all step A learning (wondering at God who created our bodies). They have identified the
ways that people use their bodies to communicate with others, the ways that people with disabilities
communicate, expressed wonder at God who created bodies for a purpose, and have celebrated that God wants
to communicate with them. They have also reflected on what the world would be like if God did not provide us
with bodies to communicate with.

Students have completed all step B learning (the promise of Christian salvation). They have looked at the life of
Jesus as example of how to behave and follow in his footsteps. They stated the ways in which Jesus used his body
to communicate with God and demonstrated the ways in which Jesus used his body to communicate with others.
Students have also looked specifically at how Jesus came to help people to relate. They did this by recording ways
in which people would act if they used their bodies to communicate as Jesus did.

The children know how to operate iMovie and similar applications on their iPads. They are competent learners.

Students know how to tell the difference between right and wrong.

Students have an understanding of what the body is, they know the main body parts and how we might use our
body in everyday life e.g. walk to school, wash our hands, talk, run, jump

Students have exposure to bible stories and have participated in many class discussions involving God.

In previous years they have discussed being thankful to God for our bodies, life, and the many gifts which he has
given us.

Students understand what a prayer is and have participated in class prayers all throughout their Catholic schooling
life.

They are able to work collaboratively in small groups and participate effectively.

Catering for Learner Diversity

Extension students:
The teacher would encourage these children to build on their answers when responding to questions asked.
For example: In the pop stick activity, if one of these children show a thumbs up, the teacher would ask them
why they think it is a thumbs up and to provide another example of when someone could be using their body
to show love for God.
If these children have extra time, they could develop a short script that matches their iMovie creation.
Provide them with extra sticky notes to come up with more than one idea.

Students at risk:
If applicable, an education assistant could be there to provide any extra guidance and assistance if necessary.
Particularly when these children are creating their iMovie.
When the class is thinking of examples to write down on their sticky notes, the teacher can move around the
room and help these children to think of answers. If children struggle with writing, the teacher can scribe for
them or allow them to draw their responses.
The iMovie can be presented in anyway hence catering for all learners and the way they like to learn best.

Non Catholic students:
These children can still take part in all aspects of the lesson.
Instead of linking to showing love for God, these children will be encouraged to simply think about the
situations and examples in terms of doing what is morally right.
Teachers need to be accepting and encouraging of all responses, even if they do not tie directly into showing
love for God. This encourages acceptance and positivity in the classroom environment.

Evidence of Learning for Assessment and Reporting

In this lesson, students will be assessed via:
Observations and anecdotal notes will be made regarding the students participation and responses during all
class discussions on the topic.
The way that they collaborate and work with their group members during the iMovie task.
The sticky note responses that they create during the class brainstorm.
The creation of their iMovie. The teacher will view their creation and check that it identifies the ways that we
can use our bodies to show love for God at Church, at school and at home.

Lesson Objectives

1. Students will tell the difference between the right and wrong ways to show love for God.
2. Students will describe how people use their bodies to show love for God at Church, in the classroom/at
school and at home. They will provide at least one example for each.
3. Students will create an iMovie (or similar) to demonstrate their understanding of how to use their bodies
to show love for God.

LESSON DELIVERY

Timing Steps of the Lesson Resources
Introduction outline how you will introduce the learning point

5 mins 1. The children come into the classroom.

2. As students enter the classroom, they are given two different pop THUMBS
sticks (thumbs up and thumbs down). UP/DOWN POP
STICKS
3. Students sit down on the classroom mat.

4. Recall prior knowledge with the children by asking them:
What have we been doing in religion lately?
What did we learn about our bodies?
How does Jesus teach us to use our bodies?

5. The teacher reads out a range of scenarios. Students are to decide LIST OF SCENARIOS
for themselves whether they think the person is using their body to
show love for God or not. Thumbs up if they think they are and
thumbs down if they think they are not. The teacher might select
students to explain their reasoning.

6. Discuss with the children why it is important for us to use our bodies
in a positive way always. Tell them that Jesus calls people to use
their bodies according to the purpose for which God created them
to show love for God, and to show love, care and friendship in their
families and among their friends.

Body - outline your teaching of the learning point and the activities that will provide further learning

20 mins 7. Explain that Jesus taught us how to do good with our bodies.
Therefore it is important for us to show love for God all the time,
not just when we are at mass. This is because God wants us to
follow in Jesus footsteps and spread Gods goodness wherever we
may go. We must try hard to live by Jesus two great
Commandments:
1) You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all
your soul, with all your strength, and with al your mind
2) You must love your neighbour as yourself

8. Provide each child with three different coloured sticky notes. Each STICKY NOTES
sticky note represents one of the following: (YELLOW, BLUE &
Yellow Show love for God at Church PINK)
Blue Show love for God in the classroom
Pink Show love for God at home
Students are to think of an example for each and then place it onto
the whiteboard when they are done.

9. Discuss the students answers as a class. Talk about how there are so
many different ways that we can show love for God using our
bodies.

10. Divide the students into small groups of three to four.

11. Using their iPads, students create a short trailer or iMovie that IPADS
teaches people how to use their bodies to show love for God. DOWNLOADED
Students can present it in anyway they would like to e.g. news WITH THE IMOVIE
report style, collection of images with audio or videoing them role APPLICATION
playing

12. The teacher may select one group to share their creation with the
class (only if there is enough time).

Conclusion - outline how you will conclude the lesson emphasise the learning point

5 mins 13. Students come back together on the mat. Ask the students to close
their eyes and reflect upon the following I wonder questions:
I wonder why we should use our bodies to show love for God?
I wonder what our world might be like if no one showed love
for God?
I wonder how I could start using my body to show love for God
in my own life?

14. Ask the students to open their eyes and ask if any of them would like
to share their responses.

15. Reinforce why it is important to show love for God by telling the
students that when we show love for God we are helping to make
the world a better place.

16. Say a class prayer to conclude the lesson: CLASS PRAYER

Dear God,

Thank you for sending us Jesus to teach us how to love others.

Thank you for showing us today how we can use our own bodies to show
love for you and one another.

Help me to continue making the right choices and guide me to your goodness
and love everyday.

Amen.
