WhatisBioterrorism?
Abioterrorismattackisthedeliberatereleaseofviruses,bacteria,orothergerms(agents)usedtocause
illnessordeathinpeople,animals,orplants.Theseagentsaretypicallyfoundinnature,butitispossible
thattheycouldbechangedtoincreasetheirabilitytocausedisease,makethemresistanttocurrent
medicines,ortoincreasetheirabilitytobespreadintotheenvironment.Biologicalagentscanbespread
throughtheair,throughwater,orinfood.Terroristsmayusebiologicalagentsbecausetheycanbe
extremelydifficulttodetectanddonotcauseillnessforseveralhourstoseveraldays.Somebioterrorism
agents,likethesmallpoxvirus,canbespreadfrompersontopersonandsome,likeanthrax,cannot.For

Bioterrorismagentscanbeseparatedintothreecategories,dependingonhoweasilytheycanbespread
andtheseverityofillnessordeaththeycause.CategoryAagentsareconsideredthehighestriskand
CategoryCagentsarethosethatareconsideredemergingthreatsfordisease.

Thesehighpriorityagentsincludeorganismsortoxinsthatposethehighestrisktothepublicandnational
securitybecause:
Theycanbeeasilyspreadortransmittedfrompersontoperson
Theyresultinhighdeathratesandhavethepotentialformajorpublichealthimpact
Theymightcausepublicpanicandsocialdisruption
Theyrequirespecialactionforpublichealthpreparedness.
