worked in a vineyard and as office

learned the techniques of repairing

Mr Singh says that the workshop
has been running quite successfully
and they plan to expand the business
to cater to more vehicles.
Ms Kaur added that she wants to
encourage women to pursue such
careers as well.
The work is good, and I want
more women to opt these works.
It is not just about a job, but it also
empowers women that they can do
anything and their talents are not
limited, Ms Kaur added.
If men can be great chefs, women
can be great mechanics too, Ms
Kaur proudly added.

massive 10-day Garba

W
ith the festive season picking up,
the Indian community in Auckland
has hosted a massive 10-day Garba
event. The event held at S-energy Sports
Centre in New Lynn commenced on Thursday,
September 21 at 7 p.m. and will continue every
evening until Saturday, September 30.
The event on its inaugural day witnessed
more than 800 people at the venue and around
200 people during the weekdays. Auckland
City Mayor Phil Goff visited the event and
addressed the crowd at the venue.
The highlights of the event have not just been
the traditional Garba dance but also various
other activities that keeps every individual
present at the event enjoyably engaged.
Different small groups will gave individual
dance performances, and a local band will
perform live on the stage throughout the event
on which people will be performing their garba
dance. The event starts with an Aarti every
day at 7:30 p.m. followed by the live band and
dance performance started from 8:30 p.m. and
continues till late night.
The enthusiasm amongst community
members is just amazing. Once the Garba
dance starts, it keeps going uninterrupted
until midnight, Tapan Dave, organiser of the
Navratri event told The Indian Weekender.
While people perform Garba, the children
keep themselves occupied with bouncy castles,
face painting, and fun maths activities offered
by a sponsor at the event.
The event also served lip-smacking
delicacies from different parts of India. The

youths would be coming out in hordes and
giving the Jacinda Ardern-led Labour Party
unequivocal access to power.
It was expected that this phenomenon of
youthquake would be implying a shift of
balance of power in New Zealand politics
toward the youth of this country.
Indeed, what has happened is that Jacinda
Arderns charismatic leadership has surely
revitalised the Labour Party by increasing the
vote share from 24 per cent to a respectable 36
per cent and giving it a real chance to form the
next government.
However, this is still short of the youthquake
that many were anticipating, where youth
would have the balance of power in New
Zealand politics.
In fact what has emerged after this election is
completely ironical of pre-election expectations
where the balance of power in New Zealand
politics has become unequally consolidated in
one person of New Zealand politics.
Both major parties are gearing up to woo
Winston Peters who has had the privilege of
holding the balance of power for the third time
in New Zealand politics in the past two decades.
This is a far more inconsistent situation
than what the Greens passionate activists set
out to change in New Zealand politics, and is
regrettably happening under the very watchful
eyes of the Greens newly elected young caucus.

idealists, with an overwhelmingly young
caucus in the new Parliament is sitting right
on the cusp where it could unleash the real
youthquake in New Zealand politics, only if it
chose to capture the moment.
A real youthquake in New Zealand politics
would be akin to youth or a party overwhelming
represented by youths, seizes the balance of
power in New Zealand politics, which means
having a decisive say who will eventually form
the government.
Indeed, this is a privilege, and currently, Mr
Peters is relishing this privilege.
However, this could easily be changed, only
if the centre of mass within the Green Party
caucus convinces its sole leader James Shaw
that they are ready to seize the moment.
By initiating coalition talks with the National
Party, the Green Party can hope to do justice
with both of its cherished goals environmental
justice and social justice, with youth getting the
best from the old guard of the country.
The alternative option of continuing to
play second fiddle to the Labour Party and
surrendering to the demands of one person for
being in the government is neither helpful in the
short term nor in the long term.

the weavers of traditional clothes
back in Telangana, India.
The community members
representing TRS put up a stall
next to the hall inside Mt Eden War
Memorial Hall exhibiting different
items of clothing for men and
women on sale.
The stall presented shawls,
lungi, towel and saree that were
hand woven by weavers in Rajanna
Siricila, Telangana, India. The
government of Telangana has taken
an initiative of supporting the
growth of the handloom industry
back in Telangana and the poor
weavers.
TRS New Zealand also presented
a full-length saree that could fit in a
small matchbox.

Can special votes go with National
and not Labour-Green?

pecial votes include overseas
votes, postal votes for people
both in New Zealand and
abroad who could not make it to a
polling booth, and dictation votes,
which are available to people with
disabilities.
In 2014, there were 293,130
(12.2% of total votes) special
votes that included around 38,500
overseas votes.
This year the Electoral
Commission is predicting 384,072
(15% of total votes) votes as special
votes. This includes an estimated
61,375 overseas and dictation votes.
In recent memory, special votes
have never helped National in the
final count.
In 2014 Nationals vote dropped
from 48 per cent to 47 per cent after
counting of special votes, which cost
them one seat in the house.
It was the third consecutive
election where National lost a seat
after counting of special votes.
In 2011 and 2014, that seat had
gone to the Greens.
Political pundits are counting on
this trend of special votes leaning
toward the left and punishing
National by taking away one or
Can Greens create the history
and go right with National?

ith post-election
negotiations not having
yet started, speculation is
rife about who Winston Peters would
eventually go with National or the
Labour and Greens.
Any speculation about a possible
coalition between National and
the Greens is being discarded as
wishful thinking or as something
that is almost inconceivable in New
Zealand politics.
This piece argues why a coalition
between National and the Greens is
the best outcome for New Zealand
and even more for the Greens if their
commitment to ecological wisdom
and environmental justice is absolute.
This could be the very moment
of the Green Party and not Winston
Peters, as we all are made to believe,
only if Greens had political sagacity,
and James Shaw dares to walk on an
uncharted path.
First of all, lets revisit the
currently prevailing convenient line
of speculation about who would
Winston Peters eventually go with
National or Labour and Greens.
Speculations on these lines are
based on two essential belief systems
within New Zealand politics and
broad political philosophy shaping it.
First, Winston Peters is the
perennial kingmaker of New Zealand
politics.
Second, the DNA of the Green
Political pundits
are counting on
this trend of special
votes leaning
toward the left and
punishing National
by taking away
one or possibly
two seats (since
numbers of votes
are more this year)
Green Party leader James Shaw
Party is permanently hardwired to
remain a junior partner to the Labour
Party in New Zealand and within the
overall framework of the political
left (globally).
This has permanently crippled
the Greens belief system that they
could be kingmaker in New Zealand
politics.
I am not sure how could a
political party with such a limited
self-belief be entrusted in bringing
transformational changes within our
economy, and day to day lifestyles,
to eventually save our planet on the
bigger scale or save our shrinking
coastlines at home.
This line of speculation undermines
or literally ignores two important
realities about rising trajectories of
two key politicians in this election
Bill English and James Shaw.
Bill English has surprised many
Green Party leader James Shaw
it largely includes first-time young
possibly two seats (since numbers of
votes are more this year).
So are Labour, the Greens, and
New Zealand First.
In fact, New Zealand First is not
keen to start negotiations for the new
government before seeing the final
result of the special votes count,
which is due on Saturday, October 7.
And this is exactly why National
is in a hurry to initiate coalition talks
with NZ First as soon as possible.
However, there is some rationale
to suggest a break away from that
trend, even if it almost appears to
be preposterous to make such a
suggestion.
The assumption that all special
votes are generally left-leaning, as
Greens, which could not only change
political pundits by coming out so
strongly with 46 per cent votes for
a party going into a fourth term,
especially when facing the star
power of Jacinda Ardern.
James Shaw, who could have
easily seen the end of his political
career and presided over a complete
wiping of the Green Party from the
parliament, rather emerged strongly
after the post-Jacinda affect. Clearly,
it was the Green Party more than
any other party which has faced the
maximum threat with Jacindas star
power with its large number of votes
shifting back to Labour.
Sadly, in the current post-election
negotiations phase both these
politicians are not getting their share
of the glory.
Right now it is a defining moment
for Winston Peters, but it could
be a very defining moment for the

voters needs a fresh look.
A quick survey of trends of special
votes also reveals a fact, which
has largely escaped the attention
of all analysis appearing in the
media so far about special votes,
that these special votes are also
reflective of the opinion polls in
the weeks immediately before the
election night.
It is to say that, the reason Greens
received a bump up in their total
votes and hence gained a seat in the
special vote count was duly backed
by a demonstrated bump in the
opinion polls immediately before
election night in all three elections of
2008, 2011, and 2014.
In simple words why Greens
eventually succeeded in getting a
favourable bump in the total count
of special votes in these years was
because Greens were clearly on
the rise. This was clearly not the case
in 2017.
The Greens have dramatically
fallen from a high of about 15 per
cent six weeks before election night
to alarming levels of about 5 per cent
to an extent even fearing a complete
wipe out from parliament.
In the end, finally, the party
barely managed to get past the cut-
off margin and secured 5.9 per
cent votes.
the political landscape of New
Zealand but also the global political
landscape of larger green politics.
It has been too long that the global
green movement has conveniently
coalesced with the political left,
perpetuating the myth that only
green-left combination has the
wherewithal to act progressively and
save our collective environment.
This is nothing but a regressive
thought in itself, which the
proponents of social progressiveness
detest so wholeheartedly.
New Zealand has been a world
leader on many previous occasions
in showing the world the right way
of doing things be it empowering
women by being the first country to
give voting rights to women or be
it on issues such as banning nuclear
ships into New Zealand including
those of the United States.
There is clearly an opportunity
for New Zealanders to take the lead
once again and show the world
how the Greens could become a
dominant political force in its own
right which can form, make, or break
governments.
This will be akin to bringing
stealth into Green politics, signalling
more like a political force, than being
a mere conglomeration of passionate
activists and urban liberals.
It is long due anyway in green
politics around the world, as the
worlds supposedly biggest challenge

This is unlike all last three
elections, where all opinion polls
before elections had reflected a
steady upward trend for the party just
before elections.
Similarly, the last two weeks
before election night this year, when
advance voting had already started,
there was a tremendous amount of
volatility in opinion polls for both the
major parties National and Labour.
In most of the opinion polls for the
week starting Monday, September
11, Labour had a four-point lead
over National.
However, it was in the week
starting Monday, September 18, that
National started bouncing back in
almost all opinion polls with a lead
over Labour.
This volatility in opinion polls just
before the election night was not the
case during the last three elections
when the Greens had received a
favourable bump in their total seat
counts in parliament.
Therefore there is no reason to
assume that special votes this year
will not be reflective of volatility in
opinion polls.
In fact, following the trends of
opinion polls in the last week before
election one should not be surprised
if National receives a slight bump
after the count of special votes.
of our times, climate change cannot
be overcome only with the support of
urban liberals.
The Greens have to reach out to
other larger social groups within
society who have an equal stake
in the environment, and today
the Green Party of Aotearoa New
Zealand has that lifetime opportunity
to expand its social base by reaching
out to National and forming the next
government.
The Green Party will be able to
achieve far more than being in the
government as sole kingmaker with
National than being the junior-most
partner in a shaky Labour-New
Zealand First & Green coalition.
They will be better able to impose
their green policies with the National
and go back to their core voters with
an absolute ownership of results
achieved under a National-Green
government rather than risking a
share of their achievements with
Labour and New Zealand First,
if they get a chance to make any
meaningful contribution at the first
place.
From New Zealands perspective,
it is not detestable to have the best of
both worlds -having common sense
around environmental issues along
with keeping a business like focus
for this country.
The kingmaker position in New
Zealand politics is up for grabs, only
if James Shaw can walk the talk.

he country is currently in the post-
election negotiation phase, which has
been a norm since adopting the MMP
system in 1996, except that this time these
negotiations are expected to be more intense
than ever before.
Assuming that these negotiations are to
follow an expected trajectory of speculations
and explore possibilities of Winston Peters
supported either National-led or a Labour-led
government, it is important to analyse the major
impact on some of the important policies that
can affect our community.
Immigration policy is one such policy that is
important for a large section of the Kiwi-Indian
community (along with many other policies).
Indeed, immigration is important for an
overwhelming number of New Zealanders; its
only that the issue has some special sensitivity
for the Kiwi-Indian community.
Undeniably, this election campaign has
shown that there is an increasing appetite for
managing immigration numbers coming into
the country.
However, by how much, and to what extent
is the million dollar question at this stage when
post-election negotiations are under way.
Reducing immigration to the level that Mr
Peters wants for New Zealand, in the range of
only 10,000 people a year, could be a major
concern, if not scary altogether.
At face value, for many commentators,
Mr Peters would share more affinity with the
Labour Party than National on the desire to

First on how immigration policy is being
currently run in the country.
At face value, National might be tempted
to concede on Mr Peters demands of cutting
down on immigration numbers, but this will
again come at a huge cost of their credibility in
continuing to manage the economy.
National is already committed to boosting
huge spending in New Zealand infrastructure
through the Public Private Partnership and any
disruption in the numbers of skilled workforce
entering the country could hinder the pace of
development of that infrastructure.
While our politicians navigate through tense
post-election negotiations, it is important to
reiterate that any cut in immigration numbers
under the future government would depend on
how badly we want to build our infrastructure.

Fiji to protect legacy of Paris Agreement: PM

rime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has
given his assurance that Fiji would do
everything in its power to preserve and
protect the legacy of the Paris Agreement.
He was speaking at the Summit on a
Global Pact for the Environment in New York
last week.
We intend to do our part to bring the Paris
Agreement to life, by making great strides
towards fully implementing it during COP23 so
that we are ready for success in COP24, Mr
Bainimarama said.
He said the meeting they had convened
was another example of their leadership,
and Fiji appreciated their determination
and perseverance in making the global
environmental legal system coherent.

state that we depend on robust, coherent and
enforceable global environmental law to protect
our citizens against environmental harm,

assume the presidency of COP23 the

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama at a
meeting yesterday at the UN between Russian
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Pacific
leaders, said that Russias position could boost
growing support for the implementation of the
Paris Agreement.
He told the Russian Foreign Minister that:
Russia has an opportunity to set an example
for other carbon-producing nations in finding
ways to marry its national interests to the
international imperative to combat climate
change, and to support the development of low-
carbon and renewable fuels.
I recognise that this is a challenge for
carbon-producing countries, and Russia is not
alone. But the stakes are great, and we need
your leadership, he said.

yesterday linked the declining health of the
oceans and the effects of climate change in the
region.

t is almost a certainty that the
Indian economy will receive a
fiscal stimulus soon on account
of the governments desperate
attempt to reverse the countrys
dipping growth rates.
Throughout history, the Keynesian
solution of taking the fiscal route
to stimulate the economy when
the monetary one is exhausted has
proved to be quite effective.
It is indisputable that the idea
had an indispensable role to play in
extricating the global economy out of
the Great Depression of the 1930s and
also the more recent crisis of 2008.
In the latter case, there was a part of
the developed world, such as the UK
and the Netherlands, which tried the
opposite by practising austerity, but
the countries that intentionally ran
large fiscal deficits like the US and
China managed to weather the crisis
better.
There is now a consensus among
post-crisis empirical studies that
fiscal stimulus has a positive effect
on the economy. Therefore, the
Indian government might also find
some reprieve from adopting a
similar approach. However, there are
quite a few issues that should be kept
in mind before going ahead with the
move.
First and the most obvious concern
is of deviating from the path of
fiscal consolidation. India has had
the widest budget deficit in Asia and
the government has done a good job

President Kovind launches India-Afghanistan air

Heritage' initiative on World
Tourism Day, under which heritage
sites will be entrusted to public and
private enterprises and individuals
for maintenance.
The initiative launched along
with 'Incredible India 2.0 Campaign'

presence and social media".
Under the 'Adopt a Heritage'
Project, those entrusted with the
development of tourist amenities at
the adopted sites would be known as
Monument Mitras'.
Speaking at the launch organised
by the Tourism Ministry, Kovind
called the Indian tourism industry as
one of the largest in the world.
"Its evolution can be gauged from
the fact that the number of tourists
across the world has increased from
2.5 crore in 1950 to 123 crore in 2016.
The tourism industry contributes
10.2 per cent of the world's Gross
Domestic Product. It is estimated that
every 10th person in the world works
in the tourism industry," an official
statement quoted Kovind as saying.

Creation of a play about Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS)

A
s attacks by IS groups have become
more frequent, creating a sense of fear,
unease and helplessness I found myself
pondering the situation and what could possibly
be done about it.
I think as a way for myself to get out of
those awful feelings, I thought there need to
be jokes.
I have a history of writing comedy sketches
and short plays and as I wondered what could
be funny, I came up with an exchange among a
group of jihadists where that days designated
suicide bomber surprises his associates by
saying I think I will do mine tomorrow with
great conviction.
Finding the little dialogue in my head quite
amusing, I tested it on my comedic friend Mark
Scott, who Ive collaborated with several times.
He laughedso I set about building on this to
create a ten-minute play for the annual Short +
Sweet Festival in Auckland.
In order to create these characters I needed
to research Islamic State and Islam, and
understand the motivations of these terrorists.
The internet, library and Al Jazeera television
were all useful resources.
Prior to our rehearsals I also encouraged the
actors in the play to create backgrounds for their
individual characters so that they felt grounded
and understood their characters objectives.
I managed to assemble a really special group
of actors. I started with Mark, as I have full
faith in his acting and comedic abilities. For the
head guy in the group I immediately thought of
Raj Singh.
Ive seen him perform in previous Short +
Sweet plays and last year he and Mark hit it off
like two naughty boys backstage.

At the auditions I saw that Sahil and Imran
could portray anger and passion and also come
across as natural.
This was Imrans first performance in a play
and Sahil is also relatively new to acting.
Their two characters provided a real hot-
headed single-mindedness, which was a nice
foil for the suicide bomber trying to avoid
his mission.

a comedic little piece, and no audience as yet,
it was hard to know how people would react to
this play.
It was a relief at our first public outing to
hear laughter and know we had succeeded. We
have received a lot of positive feedback and

and produce laughter in the face of a subject
that elicits fear.
At the end of the festival, awards were
given out and we were gratified to receive
more than our fair share: The Peoples Choice,
Best Independent Theatre Company, Best
Script, Best Director and Best Actor. Quite an
achievement and a great group effort that we
are proud of.
We have been asked to perform One Day
in ISIS again with three other plays from the
festival in a brief run at the Tiny Theatre in
Westmere in either October or November.

ome popular brands of facial creams
that are advertised as containing
"activated carbon" for better results can
be harmful to the skin and even cause death,
scientists say.
Application of such face creams may bring
quick results and prolonged use could be
disastrous, warns a study by researchers at
the Indian Institute of Engineering Science
and Technology (IIEST) at Howrah in West
Bengal,
The study, published in the "Applied
Nanoscience" journal, was partly funded
by the central government's Department of
Science and Technology.
The researchers say they found the active
micro-carbon used in these face creams to
contain nanosized particles called "reduced
graphene oxide (rGO)".
Under exposure to visible light, rGOs get
activated by oxygen in the air to generate
reactive oxygen species (ROS) harmful to
skin, says the report.
"The common effects of ROS are cancer,
cell proliferation and aging."
"Such face creams are potential cancer-
creating agents," Sabyasachi Sarkar, chemistry
professor at the Institute and lead author of the
report, told this correspondent in an email.
"The irony is our film stars and players
advertise them without knowing that they are
promoting death."
