Problem Set #1
Assigned: Aug. 31, 2012 Due: In class on Sep. 10 (M) or Sep. 11 (Tu)
Reading:
Chapter 4: Fluid Mechanics and Design Analysis
Chapter 8: Computer Aided Design (CAD)
Problems:
1. A circular hovercraft is to levitate at a gap height of 2 mm after picking up a payload. The
hovercraft has a diameter of 60 cm and a mass of 2.0 kg including the payload. Given an air
density of 1.17 kg/m3 and gravitational acceleration of 9.81 m/s2, determine the pressure in
Pa and the volumetric flowrate in m3/s required to meet this target gap height.
2. A rectangular hovercraft has a 0.5 m x 0.4 m plenum. The hovercraft with payload weighs
2.0 kg and uses one of the OD1238 series levitation fans (see spec sheet attached). Given an
air density of 1.17 kg/m3 and gravitational acceleration of 9.81 m/s2, determine whether the
hovercraft can levitate at a gap height of 2 mm using these fans. Indicate the operating point
on the graph.
Pro/Engineer Assignment
Each homework assignment includes a Pro/Engineer drawing problem to help you familiarize
yourself with the software environment. Pro/Engineer is a powerful CAD software system
capable of generating 3-D models and engineering drawings. Your team is required to produce
computer-generated drawings showing all construction details and subsystems for your
preliminary and final design reports. Chapter 8 of your textbook has detailed step by step
instructions for creating common hovercraft components using this software. Additionally, the
Pro/Engineer Supplements folder on the ENES 100 Portal > Modules > Pro/Engineer
contains valuable information and content, including: (1) Instructions on how and where to
access Pro/Engineer, (2) the format file that must be used for all drawings you generate, (3)
Slides on standards used in engineering drawings (including a good example of this weeks
assignment submission solution on slide 20), and (4) a series of step-by-step screencast tutorials
that will guide you through making your first parts, drawings and assemblies.
(a) Generate Holding Bar part with the width, depth and through hole diameter shown on
page 8-25 of your textbook. The length of your holding bar should be 2xx mm
(instead of 240 mm), where xx are the last 2 digits of your student ID number.
(b) Generate and submit a drawing of the part created in step (a) above.
