demonstrate ability to follow
steps of scientific method.
Students will plan and conduct investigations in which:
1) Data are organized into tables showing repeated trials and means
2) Sources of experimental error are identified
3) Metric Units
4) Variables are defined
5) Models are constructed to illustrate and explain phenomena
6) Dependent variables, independent variables, and constants are identified
7) Variables are controlled to test hypotheses, and trials are repeated
8) Interpretations from a set of data are evaluated and defended
9) An understanding of the nature of science is developed and reinforced
Materials:
Cabbage juice lab (test tubes, beakers, graduated cylinder, vinegar, ammonia, baking soda
solution, apron, goggles, pipettes, cabbage juice.)
Index cards, projector, examples from previous years, and vocabulary cards.

Question to ask the students to answer by the end of the experiment: What are
the steps of the scientific method?
Answer: Ask a question, do research, construct a hypothesis, test hypothesis by
doing an experiment, analyze data and come to a conclusion.

Lesson:
1) Quick Review 5-10 minutes Individual practice, fill out K-W-L chart
(What you know, what you want to know, and what you want to learn)
using words from vocabulary words on the board.
2) Participate in class activity I have Who has and pass out the index card
(5-10 minutes)
a. Each student with an index card stands up.
b. One student begins by reading a question
c. The student with the answer to this question will read his/her card
and then ask another question.
d. It is a cycle that continues connecting each students until you reach
the first person again.
3) Show an example of a past project using scientific method and show how it
connects to real world problems and investigations. Answer any questions
the students may have. (5 minutes)
4) Play Around the World (10-15 minutes)
a. Students will pair up with the person next to them.
b. On a piece of paper number 1-12.
c. Have students shift desks into 12 stations.
d. Set up index cards at each of the 12 stations.
e. Students will start at a station and have 45 seconds to answer the
question on their piece of paper.
f. Rotate around the room until all of the questions are answered.
g. Collect the paper for grading.
5) Begin cabbage juice lab to investigate scientific method. (25-30 minutes)
a. Have students take lab worksheet out of folder.
b. Read over instructions on the top of the lab.
c. Show the materials to the student and how each one works.
d. Have students write a hypothesis
e. Demonstrate and model how the students will conduct the lab.
f. Pass out goggles.
6) Clean up lab (5 minutes)
7) Answer any questions and discuss lab results. (5-10 minutes)
