1st PROBLEM (6.0 points)

The structure shown in the figure is a simplified model for experimental validation of
structural elements from a small civilian aircraft. It is composed from a semi-circular
frame of diameter equal to 0.8m, supported by a pin-joint in F and a roller support in
G and two beams AB, BC pin-joined internally at B. The first beam is also pin-joined
at point A on the circular frame while the two beams are supported by the rods EB,
ED, pin-joined at both their ends.
1. Calculate the reaction forces at points F and G and explain why this structure
is rigid (1.5 points)
2. Determine the forces in the rods and the axial force, shear force and bending
moment distributions of beams AB, BC (draw the respective N, Q, M
diagrams) (3.0 points)
3. Determine the axial force, shear force and bending moment distributions in
the curved frame (1.5 points)

2nd PROBLEM (6.0 points)

The space truss shown, consisting of rods with ball-and-socket joints at their ends, is
loaded by the force P 10e1 2.5e2 4.5e3 . The structure is supported by a ball
and socket joint at D and short links at points B and C.

1. Calculate the reaction forces at the supports and argue why this is a simple,
rigid truss (3.0 points)
2. Determine the forces at members DH, CG and CH (3.0 points)
