Neha crowned Miss Sugar 2017

Natasha Singh will represent Lautoka City at
the Miss Fiji Pageant in November to be held
in Suva.
The 23-year old registered nurse at the Lau-
toka Hospital Emergency Department beat
eight other contestants to be crowned Miss
Sugar 2017.
Ms. Singh had advocated on combating
Non-Communicable Diseases throughout the
weeklong festival which culminated on Sep-
tember 23.
After her tiring journey which has trans-
formed her to become more confident in public
speaking, the newly crowned queen believes
pageants are the best platform to do advocacy
as people do attend in large numbers.
I just tried to deliver to the best of my abil-
ity and did not really expect to win the Sugar
crown because all nine of us were gorgeous
and talented .I would dedicate this win to my
parents . This is my second year as a regis-
tered nurse at the emergency department at
Lautoka Hospital.
It was a passion for me when I was a little
girl to be part of such festivals. I used this plat-

Promoting literacy for young minds

According to a United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO) report there is a clear con-
nection between illiteracy and countries in severe poverty, and
between illiteracy and prejudice against women.
The promotion of literacy thus is a major concern and UN-
ESCO has proclaimed September 8 as the International Lit-
eracy Day to remind the international community of the status
of literacy.
The Soroptimist International (SI) Lautoka club has been co-
ordinating activities for the last two years and this year the club
went a bit further and made it a week long affair by focusing
on three rural primary schools who have benefitted through
story books for their school libraries.
Altogether more than 150 story books were presented to
Dreketi Sangam, Shri Ram Govind and Viseisei primary
schools to promote literacy through reading.
According to SI Lautoka club President Ranjini Mudaliar,
through this program the students in these schools have been
encouraged to read the story books and submit the summaries
which will be judged for prize presentations.
There will be cash prizes for three best summaries received
from each of the schools and we have given deadlines for the
summaries to be received by the club.
Our intent is for the students to read as many story books as
possible so we have advised the schools that each student can
send in as many summaries as they wish.
We have also encouraged the students to be creative with
their summaries and they can also depict their stories through
drawings and cartoons.
Mudaliar also advised that for the last two years the club had
been running this program at one each school but this year for
the first time the club is working with three school simultane-
ously.
She added that the prizes will be presented during the An-
nual prize giving program of the respective schools.
Meanwhile, the Head Teacher of Dreketi Sangam Mr Di-
namani thanked the club for taking the initiative of such a pro-
gram at his school.
He added that due to the location of his school the students
usually miss out on such opportunities.

Outstanding recognition for Chand

Winning the most prestigious award in the Reddy Group and Tanoa Hotel Group of Com-
panies annual Employee of the Year Awards function is a dream come true for Parvin Chand.
The Compressor Air and Numeric (CAPS) Supervisor of Clyde Equipment (Pacific) Ltd Lau-
toka branch walked away with the Our Company award for 2016 during the annual awards night
at the Tanoa International Hotel on September 6.
An elated Chand revealed after receiving the award from Reddy Group of Companies Manag-
ing Director Rohit Reddy that this recognition is the life time achievement for him.
He informed that his tireless efforts throughout the year by reaching sales targets and elimi-
nating customer complaints got well rewarded.
This kind of awards is definitely a major encouragement for any staff to excel to greater
heights and I am no exception.
I would like to wholeheartedly thank the panel of judges for bestowing me with this remark-
able recognition and would like to ensure my employers of even better performance in he fol-
lowing years to come.
I would also thank to thank my family for their continuous support and understanding of my
work environment as many times I also had to work extra hours.
Chand added that whilst working for the company for the last 16 years he has undergone a
great level of development as an individual employee.
He revealed that Reddy Group as a whole including Clyde Equipment (Pacific) Ltd really

The celebration of Climate Change is not simply an agreement to roll back the pollution we
put into our skies but an agreement that help us lift people from poverty without condemning
the next generation to a planet that is beyond its capacity to repair.

ing the inaugural National Climate Change Week celebrations in Lautoka.
Nakauvadra said the idea of having a Climate Change Week is noble and visionary.
He said Climate Change is happening right here and right now.
The recent spate of hurricanes that have hit America and the beautiful Caribbean Islands and
extreme change in weather pattern testifies the effect of the change in weather pattern.

Lautoka City over the years has been expe-

Festive season is here!
The season of merry making is here beginning with the cel-
ebration of the Festival of Lights.
Dipavali or Diwali as it is most commonly known in Fiji is
the most anticipated festival for our Indo-Fijian brothers and
sisters that will be celebrated on Thursday, October 19.
The tradition of Diwali began many centuries ago and con-
tinues to this day. The festival also marks the arrival of the
New Year on the Hindu calendar wherein people pray to the
Diwali a bridge between the rich and the poor.
Most Diwali celebrations around the world focus on family
and friends. In Fiji, as Diwali approaches, people clean their
home to escape bad luck in the upcoming year and families
gather for a feast and stay up late, celebrating with the help of
fire-crackers and sweets.
Tourists to our shores also get engaged to celebrating Diwali
with us and they see first-hand the unique richness in our di-
verse culture.
The respect shown to other religions indicates its highly
multi-cultural society.

wali messages stated that Diwali marks one of the most excit-

Today nearly 70% of Fijians are below the
age of 40 so you are all are actually the majority
and how you treat each other will actually set
the tone as to what kind of future Fiji will have.
Speaking at the International Day of Peace
celebration organized by the Fiji Scouts Asso-
ciation on September 21 at Saru MGM Primary
school in Lautoka Chief Guest the Attorney
General Mr Aiyaz Saiyad Khaiyum advised stu-
dents from various Primary and High schools
present from Lautoka, Nadi and Ba schools
that peace is very important and it should come
from within oneself.
You need to feel comfortable about who you
are , if you like yourself, if you love yourself
then you will be able to love other people and
you will be able to spread the inner peace to
other people.
Internationally it has been said peace is the
absence of war but nowadays peace also means
lot more than that. Peace means understanding,
respecting each other helping each other.
As fellow Fijians we should be able learn to
look after each other regardless of who they are
or where they come from.
The Attorney General thanked the scouts
organization for adopting this concept of be-
ing the messengers of peace and spreading the
word of peace .
I wish to publically acknowledge these of-
ficials of the Scouts Association who do not get
paid a single cent to do all of this.
They actually take time out from their per-
sonal time and spend it with you to develop
your talent.
On our part we will try to now coordinate
with Scouts Association and Ministry of Edu
cation to develop interest of Scouts in High
schools.

The constitution of Fiji is a docu-
ment for all the people and it is
meant to govern and guide daily
lives and it deserves to be commem-
orated in a national holiday.
These were the sentiments ech-
oed by Chief Guest the President
of Fiji Major General (Retired) Joji
Konrote during the Constitution day
celebrations at Lautokas Churchill
Park on September 7.
Thousands of people from all
walks of life including a huge num-
ber of students took advantage of the
warm and glorious western weather
to march through the City to the park
in unity for this special event which
was graced by the Prime Minister
Voreqe Bainimarama, other Cabinet
Ministers and Parliamentarians.
The display of miniature Fiji flags
and banners and the various march-
ing bands set the perfect patriotic
backdrop for the events to unfold
for the day.
According to the President the
Constitution is not a document only
for Parliament, or for the courts, or
for the various legal institutions but
it is a living document.
Last year, it was my honour and
privilege to share the podium with
several young students from all over
Fiji who read sections of the Con-
stitution.
That should have reminded all of
us that our Constitution is not just a
Constitution for today. It is a consti-
tution for the ages.
If we are wise, we will keep it,
and it will guide us in the future as
we confront issues we cannot fore-
see today. It gives us a framework
for developing new laws for new
needs.
He added that the Constitution
also challenges us to be our best
selves, to look deep into our hearts
and live up to its ideals as it is a fact
that the Constitution is a document
that gives us a path to unity.
Meanwhile, Aliha Anshira Nisha
of Xavier College in Ba, who was
the winner of the first Constitution
Essay Competition in 2016 shared
her experience of travelling to
France while Deepsha Lal, a Year
12 student from Penang Sangam
High School who was a runners-up
read out her essay titled Youths, the
Ambassadors of Equal Citizenry.
After the official program the
public were entertained by the vari-
ous marching bands and lively cul-
tural performances.
Next years Constitution day cel-
ebration will be held in Labasa as
announced by the President.

Diwali Festival of Lights

DEEPAWALI or Diwali is certainly the biggest and the brightest of all Hindu festivals.
Its the festival of lights (deep = light and avali = a row that is., a row of lights) thats marked
by four days of celebration, which literally illumines the country with its brilliance, and dazzles
all with its joy. Each of the four days in the festival of Diwali is separated by a different tradi-
tion, but what remains true and constant is the celebration of life, its enjoyment and goodness.
Historically, the origin of Diwali can be traced back to ancient India, when it was probably an
important harvest festival . However, there are various legends pointing to the origin of Diwali
or Deepawali. Some believe it to be the celebration of the marriage of Lakshmi with Lord
Vishnu. Whereas in Bengal the festival is dedicated to the worship ofMother Kali , the dark
goddess of strength. Lord Ganesha , the elephant-headed God, the symbol of auspiciousness
and wisdom, is also worshiped in most Hindu homes on this day. In Jainism , Deepawali has
an added significance to the great event of Lord Mahavira attaining the eternal bliss of nirvana
. Diwali also commemorates the return of Lord Ramaalong with Sita and Lakshman from his
fourteen year long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana. In joyous celebration of the
return of their king, the people of Ayodhya, the Capital of Rama, illuminated the kingdom with
earthen diyas(oil lamps) and burst crackers.
Goddess Parvati played dice with her husband Lord Shiva , and she decreed that whosoever
gambled on Diwali night would prosper throughout the ensuing year. Diwali is associated with
wealth and prosperity in many ways, and the festival of Dhanteras (dhan = wealth; teras =
13th) is celebrated two days before the festival of lights.
From Darkness Un to Light...
In each legend, myth and story of Deepawali lies the significance of the victory of good over
evil; and it is with each Deepawali and the lights that illuminate our homes and hearts, that this
simple truth finds new reason and hope. From darkness unto light the light that empowers us
to commit ourselves to good deeds, that which brings us closer to divinity. During Diwali, lights
illuminate every corner of India and the scent of incense sticks hangs in the air, mingled with
the sounds of fire-crackers, joy, togetherness and hope. Diwali is celebrated around the globe .
Outside India, it is more than a Hindu festival, its a celebration of South-Asian identities. If you
are away from the sights and sounds of Diwali, light a diya , sit quietly, shut your eyes, withdraw
the senses, concentrate on this supreme light and illuminate the soul.

These Four Days

Each day of Diwali has its own tale, legend and myth to tell. The first day of the festival
Naraka Chaturdasi marks the vanquishing of the demon Naraka by Lord Krishna and his wife
Satyabhama.Amavasya , the second day of Deepawali, marks the worship of Lakshmi , the god-
dess of wealth in her most benevolent mood, fulfilling the wishes of her devotees. Amavasya
also tells the story of Lord Vishnu, who in his dwarf incarnation vanquished the tyrant Bali, and
banished him to hell. Bali was allowed to return to earth once a year, to light millions of lamps
to dispel the darkness and ignorance, and spread the radiance of love and wisdom. It is on the
third day of Deepawali Kartika Shudda Padyami that Bali steps out of hell and rules the earth
according to the boon given by Lord Vishnu. The fourth day is referred to as Yama Dvitiya (also
called Bhai Dooj ) and on this day sisters invite their brothers to their homes.

The Significance of Lights & Firecrackers

All the simple rituals of Diwali have a significance and a story to tell. The illumination of
homes with lights and the skies with firecrackers is an expression of obeisance to the heavens
for the attainment of health, wealth, knowledge, peace and prosperity. According to one belief,
the sound of fire-crackers are an indication of the joy of the people living on earth, making the
gods aware of their plentiful state. Still another possible reason has a more scientific basis: the
fumes produced by the crackers kill a lot of insects and mosquitoes, found in plenty after the
rains.

WE often think of wealth in terms
of one thing: numbers. How fat is our
bank account? How are our invest-

LAKSHMI Pooja is the main event of the five-day festival

Diwali. The pooja is observed on the third day of the festival of
Diwali which falls on the dark night of amavasya.
Lakshmi Pooja Vidhi or Procedure:
Primary thing before starting Lakshmi pooja is neatness and
cleanliness. It is said that Lakshmi resides in the places which
are clean and tidy. So the first step for the pooja is to make your
home and pooja room neat and clean. It is equally important
for you to be neat and clean and don new, fresh clothes.
Draw some rangoli designs for the decoration in the fron-
tyard. Rangolies not only make the event grand but also wel-

1 tablespoon of Warm Milk
8-10 blanched Almonds, finely chopped
into slivers
1-1/4 cup of Allowrie 100% Pure NZ Ghee
3 cups of Water
1 cup of Sugar
Preparation:
1. Dissolve the crushed Saffron in the
warm milk and keep it aside for some time.
2. Now dry and make a powder of blanched
almonds. Save 10 almonds for the purpose
of garnishing.
3. Melt some ghee in a large and heavy
pan.
4. Add some flour to the ghee. Stir and fry
the mixture for about 2-3 minutes.
5. Add some almond powder to the mixture
and again stir and fry the mixture till it be-
comes golden and gives a nice aroma. The
mixture should be stirred continuously.
6. Add some water and again stir and cook
it.
7. Add some sugar to the mixture.
8. When the ghee starts to exude then add
some cardamom and saffron to the mixture.
9. Now stir and place the prepared dish
into the serving dish. Garnish it with the
chopped almonds.
DIWALI SWEET RECIPE 21
BESAN KI BARFI
Ingredients:
Besan 1 kg
Sugar 1 kg
Water 1/2 liter
Allowrie 100% Pure NZ Ghee 1 kg
For garnishing: Pistachios and Almonds
Preparation:
1. Fry besan in ghee on low flame for about 30 mins till
it becomes pink and ghee separates.
2. Mix sugar and water into a syrup.
3. Add this syrup to the besan and mix well.

CHICKPEAS AND POTATOES (Alloo Channa) CURRY water and stir occasionally until curry powder, onion, pepper and garlic
becomes a paste.
Ingredients (Serve 4-6) 6. Cook for about 5 mins.
1 can chickpeas 7. Add potatoes, shadow benny leaves (if available) and chickpeas. Stir
3 lbs potatoes up and let cook for about another 10 mins.
1large onion 8. Add remaining water and let cook until potatoes and chick peas is

1. Peel potatoes and cut in quarters.
2. Peel onions and chop finely.
3. In a medium size pan add vegetable oil and heat well.
4. Add chopped onions and chili pepper. Cook for about 2 minutes or
until onions sweat.
5. Add curry powder and stir constantly. Now, add about quarter of a cup

JALEBI CHOCOLATE COCONUT Juice of 1 lime

Ingredients:
1 and a 1/2 cup self raising flour
1 cup plain yoghurt
1 tblspn. vanilla essence
1 tspn. food colouring
3 cardamon pods - crushed
water for batter
2 cups ghee for frying
Syrup:
2 cups water
2 cups sugar
Method:
Mix together flour, yoghurt
and cardamon in a dish.
Add enough water to make a
batter.
Cover and set aside for 4 hours.
Add vanilla and food colouring
to the batter, mix well.
Make a syrup by boiling water
and sugar.
Warm up ghee.
Take a piping bag or a kitchen
funnel
and fill mixture in. Keep finger
over funnel/bag end to prevent
dripping.
Release over hot ghee in spirals.
Cook both sides on medium
heat.
Remove from ghee and transfer
to warm syrup.
Let jalebies soak for a couple of
minutes,
remove and serve.
BALLS
Ingredients
1 packet (250g) of milk arrow
root biscuits
1/3 cup (40g) of cocoa powder
1/2 cup (45g) of desiccated coco
nut (plus a little extra for rolling
the alls in)
1 tin (395g) of condensed milk
Method
Crush the biscuits and place into a
mixing bowl
Add cocoa and coconut, stir to-
gether then add condensed milk
Take small amount of mixture and
roll into a ball, then roll through
extra coconut
Continue with the rest of the mix-
ture, place the chocolate balls on a
plate and chill in the fridge for 30
minutes.
SEIHNA
Ingredients:
10 taro leaves (washed)
1/2 cup uradh dhal (soaked overnight) Note: Serve with any chutney.
1/2 onion (optional) It can also be served without frying.
Can be coated with rice flour and
then fried.
3 chillies
3 cloves garlic
1 tspn. salt
water, estimate
Method:
Grind dhal
Add lime juice and salt
Make a paste of garlic, onion
and chillies and add to ground
dhal
Add some water to make it
moist, like a paste
Smear dhal paste on the wrong
side of a taro leaf.
Take another leaf, put paste on
and place the second leaf on top
of the first one. Repeat spread-
ing the paste on every single leaf
until about 5 leaves are done
Roll up tightly, plastering loose
ends with the dhal paste
Tie with a string and steam for
about 30 to 40 minutes
Remove string, cut into 1/2
inch slices and deep fry in oil a
couple of minutes on each side
or until slightly golden in colour.
BADAM BARFI
Ingredients
1 cup (100 grams) almonds (badam)
1/2 cup (50 grams) sugar
1/4 tsp cardamom (elaichi) powder
Method
Soak the almonds in warm water
for about 30 minutes.
Drain all the water, peel the
almonds and blend them to a fine
paste in food processor. Keep
aside.
Dissolve the sugar in 1/2 cup of
water and prepare a syrup of 1
string consistency.
Add the almond paste and car-
damom powder and cook over a
slow flame, stirring continuously
till the mixture leaves the sides of
the pan (approx. 5 to 7 minutes).
Transfer to a plate and cool
slightly. Keep aside.
Cut it into pieces and serve.

PANI PURI RECIPE
Ingredients:
To make puri:
1 cup Semolina (Rava / Suji) vessel. Now add warm water
3 tblsp Fine Wheat Flour
(Maida)
1/4 tsp Baking Soda
1/2 tsp Salt
Oil to deep fry
To make pani:
1/2 cup Tamarind (Imli) Pulp Do remember to keep them
2 cups Water
2 tblsp roasted Cumin Seed
(Jeera) Powder
2 tblsp un-roasted Cumin Seed
(Jeera)
1/2 cup Coriander Leaves
3 Green Chilly (Hari Mirch)
1 cup Mint Leaves (Pudina
Leaves)
1 tblsp Boondi
2 tblsp crushed Jaggary (Gur)
To make stuffing:
2 medium boiled potatoes
1/2 cup boiled dried yellow
peas/ small chickpeas
salt to taste
Green chutney
Red Tamarind Chutney
DIWALI SWEET RECIPE
How to make pani puri:
To Make Puri:
Mix sooji, maida, baking
soda and salt in a wide mouth

dough. The stiffness should be
same as for the puris. Cover it
with a damp muslin cloth and
keep it aside for 30 mins.

up fast then the oil is rightly
hot.
2. Also the oil should not be
smoking hot or the puris will
get burnt and dark.
Heat oil in a deep
bottom pan or kadai and put
3 - 4 puris in the kadai and fry
them with the help of a slotted
spoon.
While frying, press
them in the center allow them
to puff up. We want a pocket
in each and every puri.
Now flip them over
and let them cook. Take them
out on a kitchen towel when
they are light brown and crisp.
Dont let them get dark in
color.
Let them cool. Later
store in an airtight container.
To Make Pani:
Grind in a hand blender

The love of Hindi language

Language and culture are two valuable as-
sets which needs to be kept alive in order to
retain identities.
On this note, the Fiji National University in
collaboration with the High Commission of
India celebrated World Hindi Day on Septem-
ber 14 where students and teachers took part
in Hindi impromptu speeches, drama, classical
singing, essay and Antakshri competitions.
The organizing committee took this oppor-
tunity to also felicitate and honor one of the
countries esteemed Hindi writers Professor
Subramani who has recently completed his
1,000 pages book written in Fiji Hindi titled
Fiji Maa.
According to Professor Subramani it took
him 14 years to write this book which means
I have spent 14 years with the Hindi language
just through this book.
The book portrays about 30 characters
which depicts various women of Fiji from In-
dian origin.

My inspiration is Tulsidas through his epic
Ram Charitra Manas which I read before I
was 14 years old. The sound of the language
made an impact and that is what has inspired
me to write the two books that I have written.
Tulsidas has played an important part as he
has given us our Hindi language and he has
also given us a hero. When I was growing up
there was no hero around us as on one side was
old Girmityas and on the other side was their
cane cutter sons.
Tulsi Das gave us a hero which is Shri Ram
Chandra Ji or Lord Rama.
The Professor added that the only problem
was that they could not visualize their hero
despite reading so much about him but it was
during this time that they were introduced to
cinema in their town.
We saw movies like Ram Baan, Ram Ra-
jya, Lanka Dahan and Shri Ram Bhakt Hanu-
man.
The actor who depicted Lord Ramas char-
acter was Mahipal and through this I found my
hero.

Prouds celebrates Chinese festival

Chinas second largest festival is getting
very popular in Fiji with an influx of more
Chinese investors and tourists into the country.
Held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month
in the Chinese calendar, the Mid-Autumn Fes-
tival also known as Moon Festival is the sec-
ond grandest festival after the Spring Festival
in China.
Interestingly, this years celebrations also
coincides with the 162nd anniversary of the
arrival of the first Chinese in Fiji and also with
the Chinese Golden Week from October 1 8
while the 68th National Day of the Peoples
Republic of China is also observed from Oc-
tober 1 -3 annually.
There is no doubt, Fiji would not have been
the same if it was not for the substantial contri-
bution of our Chinese community for the past
162-years.
While the important Moon Festival begins
to gain greater momentum here in Fiji, retail

Ganesh Utsav is the celebrations of
the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesh
and is considered one of the most sa-
cred religious activities on the Hindu
calendar as it pays homage to Lord
Ganesh, the deity Hindus regard as
the remover of obstacles.
Prayers and rituals marking the occa-
sion starts 11 days in advance, with
devotees abstaining from meat and
alcohol during this period.
Ganesh Utsav is celebrated widely
by the Hindu devotees, particularly
at their homes or in public and at
the end of the festival, clay idols of
Ganesh are immersed in deep water,
which disintegrates over time.
Out of all the stories linked to the
history of this festival, the most rel-
evant one dates back to the time of
Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is
believed that Parvati is the creator of
Ganesha.
The story says that Parvati used her
sandalwood paste and created Gane-
sha in the absence of Shiva. She gave
him the work of guarding her bath-
room door while she was bathing.
After Shiva returned home, Ganesha
and Shiva got into a tiff due to which
Shiva severed the head of the child.
Witnessing this site, Parvati got en-
raged and Lord Shiva promised get-
ting Ganesh back to life.
The followers searched for a childs
head facing north, but all they could
find was an elephants head. And that
is how Lord Ganesha was born.

competition during the recent Mini
Sangam Convention hosted by the
Lautoka TISI branch at Tilak High
School grounds.
They defeated Rifle Range in the final

his first ever appointment as Referee
Assessor for a World Cup qualifying

Zealand, Varman and his team of match
officials led the first leg of the OFC
Stage 3 play-off between New Zealand
and Solomon Islands at QBE Stadium

The former FIFA match official was
overjoyed to receive the appointment
and is still buzzing after representing
his nation at one of the regions biggest
football events.
I always believe in hard work and
giving my best and I am pleased that
this has not gone unnoticed, he said.

and I believe this the opening to bigger
pathways.
With OFC Stage 3 wrapped up and

The Commonwealth Games and Rugby

World Cup 7s will be the two major tour-
naments to look out for apart from the ever
popular annual HSBC World sevens series.
2018 will also see room in the 2017/2018
HSBC World 7s series schedule to accommo-
date the Commonwealth Games on Australias
Gold Coast, which takes place between the
Hong Kong and Singapore rounds.
World Rugby has announced the dates for
the 10 rounds of the mens HSBC World Rug-
by Sevens Series in 2017-18.
The schedule sees one change from last sea-
son as Hamilton takes over from Wellington
as the destination of the New Zealand Sevens,
the third round of the series, in February.
The series begins in Dubai on 1-2 Decem-
ber, 2017, before moving to Cape Town the

The three-wins on the trot for the Fiji Airways Fijian Drua in the National Rugby Champi-
onship (NRC) has not gone unnoticed in the international rugby scene with Wallabies winger
Henry Speight heaping praises for the local boys.
Speight gave a thumps up for the NRC concept adding this will allow the local players to
expose their talents representing the country in a higher competition than the domestic Skipper
Cup competition.
Im really happy for them (local players) who have shown what they can do. The respectable
first up loss before the three impressive wins is surely a move in the right direction as far as the
development of our local players is concerned.
This will for a while stop the player movement to France and Europe and I believe the NRC
is great platform to expose our local talents before they become the Flying Fijians, Speight
said.
Speight, Tevita Kuridrani, Brumbies hooker Josh Man-Rae and Shannon Parry, the Australian
Womens 7s captain and gold medalist from the Rio Games were part of the Classic Wallabies
that are currently in the country.
Close to 100 students from Primary Schools in Lautoka took advantage first hand of rugby tips
from the Wallabies stars at Churchill Park on September 18.

$15,000 boost for Blues IDC will be tough: Kadar

DESIGN Engineering has once again come on
board to boost Lautokas bid for the 2017 Courts
Inter District Championship.
The company presented a cheque of $15,000 to
Lautoka Football Association on September 22.
Design Engineering directors Robin Rafiq and
Abdul Rafiq were on hand and revealed that as die
hard Blues fan they were delighted to financially
support the team for their IDC campaign.
Infact our two-sons Junaid and Tariq they are
true Blues fans and they are the ones who have per-
suaded us to support our home team for this IDC.
And we could not turn they wishes down, the two
Rafiq brothers said.
My association with LFA goes well back since
I was the Lautoka FA vice-president so when this
opportunity came by we could not say no as we
have always supported Lautoka soccer, Abdul
Rafiq said.
LFA president Abdul Kadar said this was the big-
gest sponsorship the association has received since
he became president.
And I must thank the Rafiq brothers and Design
Engineering whole heartedly for this big sponsor-
ship as this will greatly assist in the running of the
team.
Since we have some top players in our team and
as hosts of the tournament we need to be well pre-
pared and well equipped financially, mentally and
spiritually, Kadar said.
Meanwhile, Lautoka which last won the IDC in
2008 are pooled with Nadi, Tavua and Suva at the
IDC. They play Suva first on Day 1 before taking
on Tavua and the Jetsetters.
Design Engineering Lautoka sees Suva and Nadi as their main threat in their
quest to reclaim the Courts IDC title they had last won in 2008.
Lautoka FA president Abdul Kadar said both the teams had defeated them in the
past two tournaments this year.
We have not been lucky enough in the past two tournaments where we lost to
Suva during the Fiji FACT and Nadi defeated us during the BOG semis at home.
With that in mind, we will need to be better prepared this time when we meet in
the IDC and hopefully we can turn the tables around, said Kadar.
He said they will require their talented players to be on their toes from the first
pool match against Suva on October 10 and make it through from their pool.
Compared to other districts, there is no doubt we have some good players in
our team, and we cant afford to make the same mistakes again that cost us two
tournaments titles.
We will not take other teams lightly and must come out firing from the first
whistle, he added.
The winner of the Courts IDC will walk away with a cool $22,000.

Hard work pays off for Blues FC
It was sheer determination and hard work
that paid dividends for Blues Football Club
of Nadi when they won the 2017 Vodafone
National Club Championship title at Fiji FA
Academy grounds in Vatuwaqa.
Boasting players like goalkeeper Samuela
Tamanisau, district reps Shafeem Buksh, Ratu
Josefata Dugucagi and William Valentine the
Blues from the Jetset Town raised eye brows
with their performance during the western
playoffs and then at the NCC finals.
Final hero Mohd Shalmeen, a former five-
a-side national rep nodded home the winner
past national goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau
who was a tower of strength for the Raymonds
side.
I would like to thank the Almighty Lord for
helping me, my family, and my team players.
I feel very happy scoring the winner in the fi-
nal. When I saw the ball coming towards me
I knew for sure I will score the goal, he said.
Blues FC coach Pranesh Amarsee said their
unbeaten performance during the Nadi Foot-
ball Local League gave them a hint that some-
thing special was shaping up at the end of the
season.
And they took it with both hands.
The bench mark was set. We knew it would
be tough but hard work has paid off. I thank all
those that have helped the Blues soccer club.
Many people worked behind the scenes and I
thank each and every one of them. The win is
for the players. They have worked hard for it.
