1. TO THE SERVICE ENGINEER

1.1. Responsibility of servicing personnel

During the warranty period, only persons authorised by TANA OY are permitted to carry out
adjustments of the hydraulic units and diesel engine of the TANA landfill compactor.
The TANA landfill compactor is intended for officially approved, controlled sanitary landfill
sites where no dangerous waste is present. For example, flammable or poisonous
substances or substances with a danger of explosion, or containers which have contained
such substances, are not to be handled with the compactor. Neither are hot substances,
which can be a fire hazard.
Appropriate operation and maintenance are essential for the reliability of the TANA
compactor. The warranty does not apply to damage caused by insufficient servicing,
misuse of the compactor, the use of lubricants or hydraulic fluids which are not in
accordance with the maintenance manual, or changing the aforementioned adjustments
without proper authorisation.
If anything is still unclear concerning the operation or maintenance of the TANA compactor
after reading this manual, please contact a designated representative or the service
department of TANA OY.

Do not use or service the machine unless you have read and
DANGER understood the operation and maintenance manuals for the machine.

1.2. General
Proper maintenance ensures the reliable operation of the machine and extends the service
life of the essential components. The amount of work required for maintenance is minimal
compared to the problems that failure to comply with these instructions may bring.

Hour meter
The hour meters reading is shown on the display. Perform service on the basis of the hour
meter reading or service interval alarm. The machines control system sets off a service
interval alarm every 500 operating hours. A symbol and text warning about the impending
need for servicing appears on the display 50 hours before the work should occur. The
person performing the servicing must confirm its completion from the display, and the
information is then stored in the control systems service log. This also confirms the service
alarm on the display. If the servicing is not performed within 100 operating hours from the
appearance of service interval alarm, the alarm will disappear but this too will be recorded
in the service log.

1.3. Periodic maintenance

Maintenance is essential for low operating costs. The TANA landfill compactor requires
regular maintenance in order to remain in good operating condition and retain optimal
performance. Preventive maintenance is the easiest and cheapest form of maintenance. In
addition, this allows the maintenance department to perform the servicing at the desired
time.

The following pages contain instructions for the maintenance procedures. When defining
the service interval, take into account the operating conditions. Difficult operating and
weather conditions, heavy loading, and other similar factors call for shorter service
intervals. If the maintenance schedule differs from the recommendations in this manual,
contact the engine distributor or the machine manufacturer.

All the procedures mentioned in the maintenance schedule are numbered. The numbers
refer to the instructions below. If the compactor model or models are mentioned in the
maintenance instructions, that service procedure is to be performed only on that/those
model(s). In other cases, the operation shall be performed on all models. Before
commissioning, the driver and the maintenance personnel must become well acquainted
with the maintenance schedule and instructions.

Some engine maintenance procedures require special skills and tools.

The maintenance personnel must also get well acquainted with the
WARNING engine operation and maintenance manual before using the machine.

If the machine must stand still for longer than 34 weeks, protect it from
corrosion and other damage. Contact the machine manufacturer for
NOTICE instructions.

Perform the warranty inspection and service after 50 operating hours,

NOTICE following the separate instructions at the end of the manual.

To ensure that the cabin temperature control operates under all

circumstances:

WARNING Use the heating at least once a month about 510 minutes;
Use the air conditioning at least once a month about 510 minutes.

2. SAFETY
Most accidents during the machines operation are due to a disregard of safety regulations
and instructions. These situations can be avoided by anticipating possible hazards.
Improper use of the machine is dangerous and may cause permanent disability or death.
The basic safety instructions are specified in this chapter, and, where necessary, in the
chapters describing operation and maintenance.
Hazard signs are attached to the machine in places where disregarding warnings could
cause serious injury or death.
Since the machine manufacturer cannot anticipate every possible circumstance involving a
potential hazard, the warnings in this manual and the machines signs cannot be
exhaustive. If the machine is operated in a manner not in accordance with our
recommendations, the driver must ensure that the operation does not put the driver or
anyone else in danger and that the machine neither is damaged nor becomes unsafe.

2.1. Warning symbols

The warning symbols in this manual are used for emphasising especially important issues.

Accident hazard

DANGER Neglecting the safety precautions can cause serious injury or death.

Machine or environmental hazard

Incorrect use or maintenance of the machine can endanger the

WARNING environment or damage the machine.

Note

NOTICE Note special instructions or procedures.

2.2. Warnings

Do not use or service the machine unless you have read and
DANGER understood the operation and maintenance manuals for the machine.

Use protective equipment such as a safety helmet, protective shoes,

DANGER gloves, and hearing protectors.

No inspections or servicing must be performed before the machine is

standing on a horizontal, steady surface, with the dozer blade lowered
and engine stopped. If the dozer blade must be raised during
DANGER maintenance, it must be supported securely with mechanical supports!

During work under a lifted bucket lip, the lip must be locked with the
DANGER locking bracket (1) supplied.

62
TANA G Series 7(65)
C110304EN Maintenance manual

The steering lock located on the right-hand side of the machine must
be applied (see General maintenance instructions) for transportation
DANGER and servicing, to prevent the machine from turning.

The terms right and left are defined with relation to the machines
NOTICE direction when moving forward.

Ensure that there are no people or vehicles in the operating area of the
machine while it is running or being tested. In particular, the
articulation link operating area must be clear while the engine is
running. Notice that there is a blind spot behind the machine. Never
DANGER
reverse unless you have ensured that the way is clear.

DANGER Never leave the machine unattended when the engine is running.

Keep the machine clean, paying special attention to the service

platforms and steps. Use a dust mask when cleaning the machine with
DANGER compressed air.

Do not smoke while filling the tank with fuel or when checking the
DANGER battery fluid level. The battery acid is corrosive. Be careful with it!

To protect the environment, never let oil or fuel enter the soil or sewer;
DANGER instead, collect them in a receptacle when draining them.

Adhere to the handling and safety instructions provided by the oil,

grease, and fuel suppliers, as well as the regulations issued by local
DANGER authorities.

62
8(65) TANA G Series
Maintenance manual C110304EN

Remember that, after operation, the fluids in the engine, drives, and
hydraulic system are hot. Be particularly careful when servicing these
DANGER areas.

When opening the engine cover, ensure that the locking latch on the
DANGER left holding up the cover is engaged.

If you do any welding on the machine, remember to do the following:

Turn the isolator switch to the OFF position;
WARNING
Disconnect the cable connecting the batteries;
Disconnect all connectors from both the cabin and
chassis modules;
Connect the welding ground cable as close to the
welding point as possible.

The air conditioner is filled with the refrigerant R134a. Follow the safety
DANGER instructions when handling it.

3. MAINTENANCE SCHEDULES

3.1. Use of the maintenance schedules

10-hour/daily maintenance
The 10-hour maintenance must be performed daily, even if the full number of operating
hours has not been reached. Daily maintenance ensures that possible leaks, loose
components, and excessive dirt accumulation are detected in time. If servicing is performed
after the end of the work day, the inspections mentioned in the maintenance schedule must
be repeated immediately prior to starting work next time.

250-hour maintenance / maintenance every 6 months

The 250-hour maintenance must be performed every six months, even if the full 250
operating hours has not been reached in that period.

500-, 1,000-, 1,500-, and 6,000-/10,000-hour maintenance

The procedures for shorter-interval maintenance sessions are included in procedures for
these intervals. For example, the 3,000-hour maintenance includes the maintenance
performed at 500 and 1,500 hours, and, correspondingly, the 10,000-hour maintenance
includes the maintenance performed at 500, 1,500, and 3,000 hours.
Maintenance records help in ensuring that maintenance is appropriate. Write down the
exact reading of the hour meter and the name of the service engineer.

11. FUELS AND LUBRICANTS

11.1. Engine
The engine manufacturer recommends the use of a high-quality 10W-40 or 15W-40 multi-
grade engine oil that meets the API CH and Cummins CES20076 requirements.

API and CG engine oils can be used in areas where CH oils are not
NOTICE available. This, however, affects the engine oil change interval.

NOTICE For more information, refer to the Cummins instruction manual.

11.2. Diesel fuel

Cummins Engine Company Inc. recommends the use of No. 2 diesel fuel meeting ASTM
specifications in order to ensure the best possible engine performance. If the ambient
temperature is below 0 C, acceptable performance is achieved by using a mixture of
ASTM 2D and 1D fuels.

Do not mix antifreeze with diesel fuel. This mixture can cause an
WARNING explosion.

NOTICE For more information, refer to the Cummins instruction manual.

11.3. Coolant
Heavy-duty engines require high-class coolant. A high-class coolant is a correct-ratio
mixture (50/50) of high-quality water and low-silicate antifreeze meeting the ASTM D4985
specifications, and containing supplemental coolant additives (SCA).

Final drive cooling

For cooling the final drives during summertime, coolant must be added to the drums. The
coolant is a mixture of high-quality water and antifreeze (ratio 90/10). The coolant must be
drained for wintertime use (ambient temperature below 0 C).

62
TANA G Series 51(65)
C110304EN Maintenance manual

11.4. Final drives

Use high-class synthetic gear oil:
CLP 220 according to DIN 51517,
Viscosity ISO - VG 220 according to DIN 51519.
Final drive oil is exposed to extreme temperature changes. For this reason, the oil has to be
sufficiently fast-flowing when starting so that the bearings will get their lubrication. However,
during the work, the hot oil has to be sufficiently viscous for the gears to be lubricated. For
this reason, a synthetic gear oil, such as SHELL Gear Oil HDS 220, must be used in the
final drives.

11.5. Hydraulic systems

The driving hydraulics and steering and dozer blade hydraulics share a common oil tank.
Use hydraulic oils that meet the following classifications:
HLP(HM) and HVLP according to DIN 51524, parts 2 and 3.

Viscosity classes
Viscosity grade ISO VG 10-100 (according to DIN 51519) is selected on the basis of the
operating temperature. A good operating range is 100 - 16 mm/s, while the ideal viscosity
is 36 - 16 mm/s. A limit value for cold start viscosity is 1,000 mm/s, and the lowest
permitted viscosity temporarily allowed at running temperature is 10 mm/s.

Acceptable oils for different operating temperatures are presented in the following table.
The normal operating temperature for oil for the driving hydraulics is 45 C above the
ambient temperature when the oil cooler is clean.

Oil grade Ambient temperature Oil operating temperature

Shell Tellus Arctic Oil 32 -38+10 C +35+70 C

Shell Tellus Oil T 22 -200 C +30+50 C

Mobil DTE 11M -25-10 C +30+45 C

11.6. Lubricating greases

The following properties are required of grease used in the TANA compactor:
Withstands the prevailing temperature differences
Is water-resistant
Protects from dirt
Is anti-corrosive
Is resistant to pressure
Suitable greases for TANA lubrication points are lithium- and lead-based greases with an
EP additive and, preferably, also molybdenum sulphide. Grease consistency NLGI 2.

11.7. Central lubrication system

If a central lubrication system has been installed in the machine, NLGI class 00 lubricant is
used for initial filling. A softer grease, of NLGI classes 0001, can be used during
wintertime and a harder grease, of NLGI classes 02, during summertime.

For more information concerning lubricants, see the manufacturers

NOTICE manual.

12. DISPOSAL OF THE MACHINE

The end user of the machine is responsible for its disposal. If the end user has no
resources or opportunity for dismantling the machine, this must be carried out by an entity
with appropriate knowledge and skills for the task.
The following issues must be taken into consideration when disposing of the waste
resulting from dismantling the machine:
The machines frame, all steel components, and copper and aluminium
from the electric wires are recyclable. Metals can be melted and reused as
raw materials for new products, with the exception of components that
have been in contact with materials classified as hazardous waste.
Contaminated components can usually be cleaned/rinsed to make them
recyclable.
Most plastic components may be recycled in the same way as the metal
components. Each plastic component carries a material identification code
and manufacturing date with which the recyclability of the component can
be determined.
Rubber components are not regarded as hazardous, and they can be
disposed of using standard procedures. Hoses (for example, hydraulic
hoses) must be cleaned before disposal. Worn tyres can be returned to
companies selling tyres.
Windscreens and other cabin windows are not suitable for standard glass
recycling; they may be disposed of as normal landfill waste.
Electrical components classified as hazardous (batteries, circuit boards,
etc.) and other dangerous substances must always be delivered to an
authorised waste handler or be disposed of according to local regulations.
The air conditioners, which contain CFC and HCFC compounds, must
always be delivered to an authorised waste handler.
Fluids and lubricants must be collected in designated receptacles and
sorted. They must be disposed of through an authorised waste treatment
facility.

These instructions are not binding but rather are guidelines for good waste handling
practices. Local authorities will issue more detailed instructions and recommendations for
disposal of various materials.

In disposing of the machine, currently applicable appropriate local

DANGER waste handling regulations issued by the authorities are to be followed.
