This instalment is guest-edited by Mike Eckhaus and Zoe Latta of the label Eckhaus Latta, based
in New York and Los Angeles. A comprehensive immersion into their artistic universe, which is
anchored in the core conceptual twist of parody, this issue satirises the tropes of a fashion
magazine, in particular the longstanding tradition of a September issue. Eckhaus Lattas avant-
garde approach to fashion is reflected in its adoption and subsequent subversion of existing
structures and rubrics while acknowledging the labels place in the American contemporary art
scene today. With contributions from Linda Yablonsky, Roberta Smith, Chris Kraus, Juliana
Huxtable, and others.

Published with an exhibition of work by Walter Crane at the Museum of Modern Art in Shiga, this
book offers a comprehensive overview of the artists legacy. Active in England in the latter half of
the 19th century, Crane was key in laying the groundwork for modern picture books. Working
together with Edmund Evans, an engraver and printer who developed techniques to produce
multicolour wood engravings, Crane created the first toy book with illustrations completely printed
in colour in 1865. The exhibition focuses on his book designs and illustrations, with around 140
works representing almost all of his own books and the major volumes for which he produced
illustrations.

The design collection of the Kyoto Institute of Technology is managed by its Museum and
Archives, which since 1902 has been engaged in expanding its original collection of artworks that
focus on what was at the time the latest in European design. This conveniently pocket-sized book
presents more than 250 colourful and fascinating posters from three Eastern European countries,
spanning from the 1960s through the 1980s, thereby offering an invaluable glimpse into graphic
and typographical design creativity in the post-war communist period.

Automata
Editions Xavier Barral 2017 ISBN 9782365111089 Acqn 27285
Hb 20x26cm 320pp 225ills 75col 60
Text in French
Richly illustrated with etchings, manuscripts, and old documents, and thanks to Nicholas Foulkes
text, the book retraces the epic tale of the automaton from ancient times up to the present day.
The history of automata is intimately linked to the emergence and development of clock making
through the centuries, to the mastery of time, and to mechanical science. Wondrous objects that
are at once scientific and magical, the astronomical clocks including automata testify to the
technical research and inventiveness of their designers. The creation of more complicated
wheelwork and the use of extremely meticulous spiral springs gave free rein to the clockmakers
imaginations, to impress princes, inventing animated objects that fascinated philosophers and
scientists alike. Doctors, thespians, and thinkers of the modern world all saw these increasingly
lifelike automata: wonderful simulacra of life. These articulated figurines were to inspire thought,
science, literature, the performing arts, and more.
Continuing this tradition, the house of Van Cleef & Arpels has harnessed all of its designers
talents to create an exceptional automaton: a fairy, whose movement celebrate the art of the
inventors of past centuries.

Japanese artist Mou Hitotsu no Kenkyujo once again delivers a fresh take on the traditional flip
book by incorporating negative space into his animated art. Flipping through the book,
unexpected designs reveal secret compartments that play a role in the mini-narrative that unfolds.
In this instalment, a little bird visits a tiny domicile that is actually part of a living snails shell,
perched on a leaf. A lantern bug crawls inside, but what happens to the homeowner next is
extraordinary!
