E-Choupal

e-Choupal is an initiative of ITC Limited to link directly with rural farmers via the Internet for
procurement of agricultural and aquaculture products like soybeans, wheat, coffee, and prawns.
It was conceived to tackle the challenges posed by the unique features of Indian agriculture,
characterized by fragmented farms, weak infrastructure and the involvement of numerous
intermediaries. It is a virtual market place where farmers can transact directly with the processor
and can realize the better price for their produce. It provides for transparent transactions by free
flow of information. The programme involves installation of computers with Internet access in
rural areas to offer farmers up-to-date marketing and agricultural information. ITC-ABD also
conceived e-Choupal as a more efficient supply chain aimed at delivering value to its customers
around the world on a sustainable basis.
