Stage Time/Interaction Procedural Detail

 You can find sentences about the news stories in Q1.

You are to try to identify and underline the main verb
in each sentence. Do it in pairs.
 ICQ – What are we underlining?
 <Pair work. T monitors.>
 <T gets Ss to share their answers with the class.>

 Can you tell me who or what did each action for the
sentences? Do the sentences always tell us who or
what did each action?>
e.g. Shaun Kenna, a Brisbane firefighter, rescued his
ex-wife from a burning house.
 <Ss identify the agent. T monitor actively.>
 <Note: No agents for (d), (f) and (g).>

 <T puts an example on the WB in active form.>

 e.g. Thomas stole the money.

(Subject)+ (Verb) + (Object)
 This is an example of an active sentence. You will
find the “Subject” comes before the “Verb” and the
“Object” comes after the “Verb”.
 <T uses arrows to illustrate.>

 <T puts the passive form on the WB.>

 e.g. The money was stolen by Thomas.

(Subject) + (Verb) + (Object)
 Note that the “Object” has become the “Subject”. The
“Verb” changes from past tense to past participle.
 <T uses arrows to illustrate.>

 Let’s go through (a) together to find out if the

sentence is active or passive and what its subject is.
 <T writes (a) on the WB while Ss attempts.>

 (a). Shaun Kenna rescued his ex-wife from a .

unknown.

after the verb using by.
