INTRODUCTION i
LOAD TABLES
Beginning in the mid 1970s, and continuing into the 2000s, the retrofitting of existing buildings
has become widely practiced. Three principal factors have been responsible for this activity:
All of the above have resulted in the retrofitting, renovating, and altering of buildings. These actions
have in turn resulted in imposing additional loads on the floors and roofs of existing buildings. When these
floors and roofs are supported by steel joists, it is the structural engineers responsibility to determine what
the joist capacities are; and, in order to ascertain this, he must know the joist types and designations.*
This manual, with its instructions, lists, specifications, and load tables, has been prepared to enable
the investigating engineer to determine such joist designations and load carrying capabilities.
