The figure above shows an elastic three-layer system under a set of dual tandem tires. Each tire
has a contact radius of 4.52 in. (115 mm) and a contact pressure of 70 psi (483 kPa). Layer 1 has
an elastic modulus of 740,000 psi (5.1 GPa), a Poisson's ratio of 0.4, and a thickness of 6 in. (152
mm); Layer 2 has an elastic modulus of 23,000 psi (159 MPa), a Poisson's ratio of 0.35, and a
thickness of 8 in. (203 mm); and Layer 3 has an elastic modulus of 11,000 psi (77 MPa) and a
Poisson's ratio of 0.45.
(a) Compute the surface and interface deflections at the 12 grid points, as shown in the figure, and
determine the maximum surface and interface deflections.
(b) Compute all the components of stresses and strains at the bottom of layer 1 and on the top
of layer 3.

a)
A-1) Surface and interface deflections at the 12 grid points.
Note 2 Here 6.0000 vertical coordinate represents the 1st layer (6mm) deflection
Note 3 Here 6.0000 vertical coordinate represents the 2nd layer (8mm) deflection

b) Compute all the components of stresses and strains at the bottom of layer 1 and on the top of
layer 3. (Work procedure is shown in appendix B)
The components of stresses and strains should be calculated on top of the layer 2 and bottom of the
layer 1. So the layer 1 thickness is given as 6 in, so that it calculates the strains and stresses of the layer
1 bottom. But for the layer 1, the top stresses and strains should be calculated. So a thickness of
14.0001 inch is considered, so that the software understands, the correct location of stresses and
strains we need. Note Here 6.0000 vertical coordinate represents the 1st layer (6mm) bottom strains
and stresses and 14.0001 vertical coordinate represents the 2nd layer (8mm) top strains and stresses.

Do not need to input Nonlinear, Viscoelastic and Damage tabs as the problem that we are solving is
linear elastic and damage is not considered.

Software cannot identify the top of the layer 3 and bottom of the layer 1. So, we wrote it as 14.0001
as the top of the layer 3 and 5.9999 as the Bottom of the Layer 1 because of easiness to identify to
the software.
