Guidance for Oasis 3 P-Series PV-Syst V6

SunPower Performance Department | March 2017

2016 SunPower Corporation 2016 SunPower Corporation 1

Introduction: P-Series Technology
SunPowers preferred modeling solution is to use PVSim (https://pvsim.sunpowercorp.com) as
this software contains a detailed characterization of every SunPower module with an
appropriate simulated behavior in accordance to the mounting system designed.
PVSyst is a reference in the PV industry often required in Bid processes, and is designed for the
study, sizing and data analysis of complete PV systems. PVSyst is highly customizable and the
default parameters are linked to standard PV modules. But SunPower technologies are different
from standard industry products, and model parameters need to be edited to achieve more
accurate results for SunPower systems.
In this document, SunPower Performance Department is providing the preferred settings to be
used when performing a PVSyst 6 simulation with P-Series modules.

Modeling SPWR Modules & Systems in PVSyst 6
Several model parameters in PVSyst 6 may be edited from the default settings to achieve
more accurate simulation results for SunPower modules. Most of the following adjustments
are based on extensive outdoor characterization measurements at the Sandia National Lab
(and other qualified third-party laboratories).
This document contains SunPowers recommendations for:
- Transposition model
- Oasis 3.0 Tracker & Array Configuration
- PAN File selection
- Module quality / LID / Mismatch / IAM losses
- Thermal parameter
- Ohmic losses
- Soiling loss
- Shading loss

Oasis 3P Module, Quality, Mismatch and LID
Set the module quality Nameplate + 2W
The industry tolerance standard on module flash have improved recently, and most manufacturers should be delivering modules which
flashon averagevery close to their nameplate rating with a distribution of no greater than 5%.
P-Series modules are expected to flash at approximately 2W above nameplate, on average.

Set the mismatch @ 0.5%

Research has demonstrated that the voltage mismatch associated with current module tolerance standards (+/-5% normal distribution) will
result in a loss in system power of approximately 0.5% (Bucciarelli mismatch). SunPower P-Series modules use tighter binning standards (-
0/+5 W). Consequently, SunPower recommends using a total, conservative mismatch value of 0.5%.

Set the LID (Light-Induced Degradation) according to the following table

Module Model LID loss (%)

P17 1.2%
P18 2.0%
P19 1.4%

Oasis 3P Soiling
Soiling and dust impact on PV plant performance may be assessed in a dynamic way using the rainfall and
humidity data. Soiling losses are expected to significantly decrease when manual washes are added to
natural rainfall events. In rainy regions, natural washes are often enough to keep the plant operating at an
acceptable capacity. However, for regions with an extended dry season, and particularly during the period
of peak production, manual washes are necessary to keep the performance to a high level.

Select one of three options for estimating soiling losses at a specific site, in the following order of
preference:
1. Request a detailed soiling model
assessment from the SunPower
Performance Team
2. Use an established external soiling
model
3. Set the soiling @ 1% for rainy area and
2% (with a number of washes to be
defined) for regions with a
pronounced dry season

Oasis 3P Shading Response
The P-Series module has a much better
response to shade than conventional c-Si
modules when installed in landscape
orientation.
To reflect this better response in PV-Syst,
create a shading scene in the Near Shadings
section and select the Linear shadings option:

Note: advanced PV-Syst users know that for

conventional PV systems, the Detailed,
according to Module Layout option yields more
accurate results. However, this is not true for
SunPowers P-Series modules.
