TURKEYS LARGEST INDUSTRIAL ENTERPRISE

Operating four oil refineries, with a total of 28.1 million tons

annual crude oil processing capacity, Tpra is Turkeys largest
industrial enterprise. In addition, a majority stake ( 79,98 %) in
shipping company DTA and 40% share ownership of petrol
retailer Opet, creates synergies and adds value to the operations.
The roots of Tpra, an integrated petroleum company with a large market share, corporate reliability,
production complexes and affiliates, dates back to PRA (stanbul Petrol Rafinerisi A..) founded by the
U.S. Caltex Company. In 1983, PRA and three other publicly owned refineries were brought under the
Tpra umbrella by arrangements made for a more effective operation of State Economic
Enterprises. The first step for operational diversification of Tpra was the purchase in 2001 of the
Petkim Yarmca facilities, putting in place the ready-to-operate infrastructure for enlargement projects
that were needed by the refining operations.
According to the Nelson Complexity Index used as an indicator for technical ratings of refineries, the
existing refinery complexity of Tpra is equal to the complexities of refineries in France on the
Mediterranean coast. The existing refinery complexity of Tpra (7.25) is higher than the Mediterranean
refinery complexity .
TPRA REFINERIES

Tpra operates four oil refineries, three of which process imported crude. The 11 million tonnes a
year Izmit refinery at Izmit in north west Turkey and the 11 million tonnes/yr. Izmir refinery at
Aliaga on Turkey's central Aegean coast process crude from global markets delivered by tanker while
the 5 million tonnes/yr. Kirikkale refinery at Kirrikale in central Turkey processes crude delivered to
Turkey's Mediterranean oil hub at Ceyhan and transited to the refinery via a bespoke pipeline. The
fourth refinery, the 1.1 million tonnes/yr. Batman refinery processes crude produced a myriad small
oil fields in south east Turkey delivered to the refinery both via an existing pipeline network and by
road tanker.

IZMIR REFINERY

The Izmir Refinery started production in 1972 to

meet Turkeys growing petroleum product demand
with a 3 million tons/year crude oil processing
capacity and has since undergone important
capacity augmentation and unit modernization to
achieve a capacity of ten million tons/year since
1987. In 2007, its crude oil processing capacity was
confirmed to be 11 million tons/year, taking into
account revisions made in its distillation capacity.

The refinery has a 7.66 Nelson Complexity. In line with charge optimization efforts realized
throughout Tpra, the refinerys capacity utilization rate was 77.1% in 2012 including the processing
of imported semi-finished products. Its production of main marketable petroleum products -
consisting of LPG, naphtha, gasoline, jet fuel, diesel, base oil, heating oil, fuel oil, bitumen, wax,
extracts and other products - reached 8.1 million tons. The Izmir Refinery has a 400 thousand
tons/year capacity base oil production unit, the only one of its kind in Turkey. In 2013, Izmir Refinery
achieved a sales volume of 8.8 million tons, 6.0 million tons of which were sold domestically. All-time
records were broken for jet fuel and bitumen sales.
