Presidents Message
By Brendan Ford
Brendan Ford, Esri-MUG
I am excited to return for another stint as the Esri-MUG President
President. A lot has changed since I was last the President of
MUG, the conference landscape being the most dramatic of
those changes. It appears that our annual Esri-MUG
conference is giving way to a regional version of the Esri Public
Sector GIS Conference. As a group we look forward to
supporting that effort as we would the annual MUG
conference.

This past spring the group completed our second successful spring one-day conference
where we hit the maximum registrations. We were delighted to have five student
speakers among the presentations. We plan to make the spring meeting an annual
event at UMUC and we look forward to your active participation in the future. We also
held our annual golf tournament where we raise scholarship money for students in GIS.

As a group we continue to look for ways to share technology ideas, experiences and
creative uses of Esri software, and networking and career building opportunities. I
encourage you to participate as a member of the board and get more involved in the
GIS community.

Esri-MUG SIG at Esri UC

The 2017 Esri International User Conference was held from July 10-14, 2017 in San
Diego, CA. Rachel Weeden (Esri) and Dan Hunter (Gannett Fleming) hosted an Esri-MUG
Special Interest Group (SIG) meeting on Tuesday evening July 11 at 5:30 p.m. The
meeting was well attended and many were new to the MUG. After a brief explanation
of the MUGs mission and a round table of introductions by all attendees, Rachel and
Dan moderated a rousing round of GeoJeopardy. The meeting was capped with a bit
more social networking where folks chatted about GIS and their work interests before
heading out for an evening in San Diego.
Visit the conference web site at http://www.esri.com/events/index.html for more
information about the Esri International User Conference.

GIS Day Events in the Mid-Atlantic

GIS Day is November 15, 2017! GIS Day provides a forum for users of geographic
information systems (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are
making a difference in our society.
The first formal GIS Day took place in 1999. Esri president and co-founder Jack
Dangermond credits Ralph Nader with being the person who inspired the creation of GIS
Day. He considered GIS Day a good initiative for people to learn about geography and
the uses of GIS. He wanted GIS Day to be a grassroots effort and open to everyone to
participate.
GIS Day is celebrated the Wednesday of National Geography Awareness Week, which is
itself celebrated the third week of November each year. Hundreds of GIS Day events
are planned this year across the globe on nearly every continent. Many agencies and

organizations throughout the Esri-MUG area observe GIS Day by hosting local events that
highlight GIS and their efforts in using GIS. A list of GIS Day events to be held in the
Mid-Atlantic area is shown below.
