MODULE NO.1

QUESTION:

A. In reference to Pauls teachings, what is his view of the

following: (1-2 pages, single space for all 3 items below)

1. Human Life

St. Paul confers his position of human life in the

world. He is one of the most significant and influential of
all the saints. Many of his writings are contained in the
Canon of the Bible and have influenced the growth and
development of the Church since the first century.
St. Paul was a Roman citizen and a Pharisee, and was
originally known as Saul. He even headed over the
persecutions of the early Christians. However, he converted
himself to Christianity because he experienced a powerful
vision while on the road to Damascus. He was duly baptized
and took the name Paul.
Almost all St. Paul's writings are centered to Jesus
Christ. These are important because they provide good advice
for how Christians should live. His view in life was focus
Jesus Christ. According to one of his letters to the
Philippians 1:21, For me, to live is Christ and to die is
gain. This indicates that Paul believes that life is Christ
thus we should live in him, and live like Jesus. St. Paul
wanted us to learn from his teachings that as a human, we
should focus our life to Jesus Christ.
St. Paul University Philippines
Tuguegarao City, Cagayan 3500

Also according to St. Paul, it requires God to justify

us if we are to reach the wholeness. He tackles his ideas of
sin which is universal to human life. According to Romans
3:9-20, 9 What shall we conclude then? Do we have any
advantage? Not at all! For we have already made the charge
that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of
sin. 10 As it is written: There is no one righteous, not
even one; 11 there is no one who understands; there is no one
who seeks God. 12 All have turned away, they have together
become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even
one. 13 Their throats are open graves; their tongues
practice deceit. The poison of vipers is on their lips.
14
Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.
15
Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 ruin and misery
mark their ways, 17 and the way of peace they do not know.
18
There is no fear of God before their eyes.19 Now we know
that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under
the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole
world held accountable to God. 20 Therefore no one will be
declared righteous in Gods sight by the works of the
law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.
Based on the passage and St. Pauls view of human life
and sin, all humans are equal under the power of sin. No one
is greater or more righteous, each human is a sinner and we
held accountable to God. And he is the only one that can
rationalize us to wholeness.

2.Mortal Body

Mortal as defined is relating to humans which is

subject to death. According to First Letter to the
Thessalonians: "...this is the will of God, your
sanctification: that you abstain from unchastity, that each
one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and
honour , not in the passion of lust like heathens who do not
know God" (1 Th 4:3-5). "God has not called us for
uncleanness, but in holiness. Therefore whoever disregards
this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit
to you" (ibid. 4:7-8). For St. Paul human body is treated
with holiness because it is God who gave us this. We should
live in purity not in sin.
St. Paul University Philippines
Tuguegarao City, Cagayan 3500

Sin is likely to be associated to death thus our mortal

body is also to be subjected to death. As to the teachings
of St. Paul, spirits give life to our mortal bodies. As
stated in Romans 8:9-11 that, (9)But you are not in the
flesh, you are in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God
dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ
does not belong to him. (10) But if Christ is in you,
although your bodies are dead because of sin, your spirits
are alive because of righteousness. (11) If the Spirit of
him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who
raised Christ Jesus from the dead will give life to your
mortal bodies also through his Spirit which dwells in you.
Even thou we are sinners, but Jesus Christ lived in our
bodies because our righteousness, then our spirits will be
reunited with God.

3.God/Supreme Being

Jesus Christ is the basis of St. Pauls view to God/

Supreme Being - the highest Good. God created everything,
Blessed the God the Father of Christ Jesus our Lord, the
all merciful Father and the God of all comfort. He
encourages in all our trials, so that we may encourage those
on any trial, with the same comfort that we receive from God
(2 Cor. 1:3-4). According to St. Paul, God the eternal
source is all reflected in Jesus Christ. God shows mercy and
love to all. He fulfilled all his promises of love to
mankind through his Son, Jesus Christ. He is the one who
guides and transforms his creations through his plan of
redemption that brings comfort and encouragement to all of
us. He perceives and determines at the same time the
beginning and end of us. St. Paul stated to his letters that
we have a compassionate God who we have sinned, but love us
so much that he gave his son to regain us from our
immoralities and promised us to have an eternal life for
those who believe in Jesus Christ.

2. Among the 6 major themes in Pauls letters, choose 3 and

explain each comprehensively. (2-3 pages, single space for
the 3 themes)

1.Jesus the Christ is the fulfillment of Gods promises.

People often think of the Old Testament as a book about

Gods creation of the world, about Adam and Eve, about Noah,
Abraham, Joseph and Moses. It is thought as a Book that
details Gods Laws for us, like the Ten Commandments. When
you read the Old Testament in light of Jesus, in light of
Gods promise to send a Messiah to save mankind from our
sin. (Becker, S.) 16 Standing up, Paul motioned with his
hand and said: Fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who
worship God, listen to me! 17 The God of the people of
Israel chose our ancestors; he made the people prosper
during their stay in Egypt; with mighty power he led them
out of that country; 18 for about forty years he endured
their conduct in the wilderness; 19 and he overthrew seven
nations in Canaan, giving their land to his people as their
inheritance. 20 All this took about 450 years. After this,
God gave them judges until the time of Samuel the prophet.
21
Then the people asked for a king, and he gave them Saul
son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin, who ruled forty
years. 22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. God
testified concerning him: I have found David son of Jesse,
a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him
to do. 23 From this mans descendants God has brought to
Israel the Savior Jesus, as he promised. 24 Before the
coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all
the people of Israel. 25 As John was completing his work, he
said: Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are
looking for. But there is one coming after me whose sandals
I am not worthy to untie. 26 Fellow children of Abraham
and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message
of salvation has been sent. 27 The people of Jerusalem and
their rulers did not recognize Jesus, yet in condemning him
they fulfilled the words of the prophets that are read every
Sabbath. 28 Though they found no proper ground for a death
sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed. 29 When
they had carried out all that was written about him, they
took him down from the cross and laid him in a tomb. 30 But
God raised him from the dead, 31 and for many days he was
St. Paul University Philippines
Tuguegarao City, Cagayan 3500

seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to

Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to our people. 32 We
tell you the good news: What God promised our ancestors
(Acts 13: 16-32), St. Paul preaches that Jesus is the
complete fulfillment of the Promise of the Old Testament and
that the promise is for us. (Becker, S.)
St. Paul explained in 2 Corinthians 1:20 that all the
promises of God are made available to us through Christ; he
wrote: For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in
him Amen, unto the glory of God by us. In the Old
Testament, these promises were given to Gods people Israel,
but the New Testament shows that those who believe in Christ
share in them, as they have become part of the true Israel
of God through faith. (Creationconcept).

2.The new life of believers is a gift of God.

In the Bible we see that a relationship exists between

the Lord Jesus and God, and a relationship exists between
the Lord and us. Many Christians have not clearly seen the
relationship between God, the Lord Jesus, and us sinners.
Therefore, they misunderstand and think that they can lose
their salvation. There is a wonderful word in the Bible that
says we Christians, the saved sinners, are the gifts given
by God to the Lord Jesus (John 17:6). The Father is here,
and the Son is also here. The Father gave the saved ones as
gifts to the Lord Jesus (Nee, W.).
God gave us to the Lord Jesus as a gift. If we were to
perish and lose our salvation, if our salvation were not
eternal, Gods giving us to the Lord Jesus would become a
witticism on the Lord. If God were not omniscient, it might
be possible for us to perish because God would not know
whether our salvation would be temporary or permanent. But
God is omniscient; He knows whether we will be saved
eternally or temporarily. God is omniscient, God is an
eternal God; whatever He does is eternal. If God gives us as
a gift to the Lord Jesus, He cannot regard that as a token
favor only (Nee, W.).
St. Paul University Philippines
Tuguegarao City, Cagayan 3500

New life in Christ starts when we pray to God and

invite Jesus to come into our lives as our Lord and Savior.
Jesus has entered into a personal relationship with us
through the heart transplant that God has performed upon
us. Confessing our sins, making praters and acknowledging
that Jesus is Lord will start our new life. Sincerity will
help us to experience the work of the Holy Spirit to make us
into a new person. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the
new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2
Corinthians 5:17). We will have a new life as a new person
in Christ Jesus.

3.Salvation is by grace through faith.

8
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith
and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God
9 not by works, so that no one can boast. (Ephesians 2:8-
9). It states that the source of our salvation is grace.
God's undeserved, unmerited favor toward us as expressed in
providing redemption through Christ Jesus.
The Bibles description of salvation is entirely
different. It teaches that all have sinned. (Roman 3:23) and
that the consequence for sin is eternal death. Though, God
by his grace has provided a way for sin to be forgiven. That
way is faith in his Son, Jesus Christ. (Roman 6:23).
Salvation according to Bible, is solely grace and faith.
Bible teaches that all human beings have chosen to sin,
that is, to disobey God. The consequence of sin is eternal
death. Persons are not capable of saving themselves from
this plight. God, out of love for humankind, has provided
salvation (John 3:16).
Gods gift of salvation is available through faith in
his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. By his life and by his death
on the cross, Jesus offers a way from eternal death to
eternal life. That way is an expression of Gods grace. The
way can be walked only by faith (Romans 5:1-2).
Although the Bible uses different word pictures to
describe how Jesus provides salvation for lost humanity, in
each case the message is clear: Salvation is available only
through faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Some
St. Paul University Philippines
Tuguegarao City, Cagayan 3500

denominations have included such things as baptism, church

membership, good works or sacraments as necessary for
salvation. Baptists have insisted that salvation comes only
by faith in Gods grace gift of Jesus.
(Baptistdistinctives).

MODULE NO.2

QUESTION:

A. On pp 3-18 of the reference attached in this module, what

new things did you discover about St. Paul? Choose 2
attribute of St. Paul would you like to imitate? Why? (1
page only, single space)

St. Paul is a very interesting person. I discovered

several things about him and learn some attributes that I
can imitate in my life. First, St. Paul is aware of his
strengths and weaknesses. I think it is important to
recognize our strengths and weaknesses as a person because I
can use it to solve problems easier. Using my strengths
specially in my work as a nurse can help my patients to heal
faster. Recognizing my weaknesses can help me improve to
better attend to the needs of the people I will aid. Second
is he is capable of lasting endurance, I believe imitating
this characteristic is very vital to my life because as a
nurse having high endurance can help more patients. It can
also make me more productive in life.
St. Paul University Philippines
Tuguegarao City, Cagayan 3500

B. In your personal life and in your workplace what are the

possible ways for you to realize and make these attributes
become your own? (1 page only, single space)

As a registered nurse, identifying my strengths and

weaknesses is very important. These can help me in my daily
life and also in my work. Knowing on strength can be a
useful tool to know how can you help a patient. For example,
I know that I am good in some skills than other nurse, so in
order for them to learn and make their work easier, I will
teach them and show them how it is properly done. These will
benefit not only the patient but also my colleagues. Our
weaknesses are also important because these can make us a
better person. If we can identify our weaknesses and
recognize it as a weakness, then we can find a way to cope
up with this weakness. Endurance is also important for
nurses like me because of the tons of workload that we have
in our everyday duties.
St. Paul University Philippines
Tuguegarao City, Cagayan 3500

C. What are the stumbling blocks you need to wrestle with to

make these traits a reality in your life? (1 page only,
single space)

Every person faces new challenges in their lives every

day. It is how the person sees these challenges or blocks
and how can conquer or solve it. Many people did not want or
cannot recognize problems easily. In order for us to know
it, we should be open-minded in all aspects of our life. Not
recognizing ones weakness may result to problems especially
for us nurse. For example, if a nurse does not fully know a
skill like inserting nasogastric tube to a patient and
insist on doing the procedure without asking questions to
his colleague. This may result more harm to the patient and
the nurse as well. For me, I should accept the fact that I
am not perfect and I have flaws. I should use this flaws for
me to be a better person.
St. Paul University Philippines
Tuguegarao City, Cagayan 3500

D. Paul suffered immensely as seen in p.8-10 of the reference

attached. What is so admirable in him which is worth
emulating during his time of suffering? (1 page only, single
space)

St. Paul perception of his suffering was not as a

punishment but something decent. He saw his suffering with
those of Jesus Christ and it was this identification which
inspired him to drove him to carry on. And he had the hope
of sharing Jesus glory (Grant, p.27) He believe that his
suffering is not as big as the suffering of Jesus Christ. I
appreciate St. Paul beliefs that he kept to see goodness to
things though He is in a situation of misery. All people
have their own sufferings, different dilemmas in their life.
Some may try to destroy you, speak against you, treated you
as nothing and even test your capacity. But in the end, it
is Jesus Christ who suffered the most. Today, people are
often affected of what people may think about us, even if
just so small or simple. We tend to please others than
please ourselves. For me what is important is what I think
of myself, I know myself than others.
St. Paul University Philippines
Tuguegarao City, Cagayan 3500

E. On pp 19-36 of the same reference, reflect on Pauls

teachings. What do the teachings of Paul have to say for us
Christians living in the 21st century? Choose 2 of his
teachings only. (1 page only, single space)

St. Paul teachings remind us to look and to act what a

Christians should be. 21st century is full of trials and
temptations. We are fonder now on the teachings of the
modern world, which is abundant of depravities. That is why
St. Paul teachings let us understand that if we grasp and
hold firm in Jesus Christ, He will not let us be bad. If we
put Jesus Christ first, we will always be guided by the
right path that we should take. Temptations are always
around us but making Him as our light, He will always
protect us. Our faith in God has suffered in modern world,
our faith in God is always tested.
As a Christian, St. Paul teaching let me realize that
it is part of our life that we face challenges and
struggles. But God reminds us that we should not own our
burdens. Guidance from God is always there, we just ask for
it, that He may help us with our problems.
Most modern Christians often forgot to pray. St Paul
teachings made me realize the importance of prayer. Pray at
all times, (Thess 5:17). In his teachings, prayer is
important and we should pray in every occasion. It is our
means to communicate to the God our thankfulness and
longing. St. Pauls teachings remind us to look back to what
should a Christian should be, on how we should live.

MODULE NO.3

QUESTION:

1. The first Sisters who set foot on the Philippines soil in

Dumaguete lived the example of the grain of wheat that
continues to produce generations of Paulinians throughout
the country and of the world, who give witness to the
reality that: THE PAULINIAN IS FOR OTHERS. What does being
a Paulinian for others mean? (1/2 to 1 page only, double
space)

Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat

falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of

wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit (Jn 12:26).

The grain of wheat must give itself up to a kind of death in

order to bear fruit. Its dying is the principle and cause

of new life. (Scalia, P.) As a Paulinians, we should be

selfless for the benefit of others. For me Paulinians for

others means that we should be responsible for the other

people. Paulinians continue to serve people specially

children, youth, the sick, and the aged. The Paulinians, by

being faithful to the teachings of St. Paul become a leaven

to the society. As a Paulinian, we should be Christ-

centered. It can manifest in being charitable, community-

caring, simple, humble, faithful, hard-working and pious. We

should be kind, caring and loving for others. We should

share our blessings, offer goods to the needy, and take care
St. Paul University Philippines
Tuguegarao City, Cagayan 3500

of our surroundings. We should be volunteers, modest and

always do the right thing. We should be loyal to Gospel

truths and principles. And lastly, we should be moral,

sincere, spiritual and religious. Having these

characteristics will not only benefit ourselves but also to

the people around us.

St. Paul University Philippines
Tuguegarao City, Cagayan 3500

2. The nature and value of the grain of wheat is found in its

falling, and in its bearing fruit. The vocation of every
Paulinian is anchored along this line. Please explain.
(1/2 to 1 page only, single space)

As a Paulinian, we have vital roles in our society. We

are to impart the teachings of St. Paul. The knowledge and
lessons we learned during our stay in St. Paul University.
As we finish our study in the university, new and young
students will arrive and it is our duty to help, mold and
teach them to be a better person. Amen, amen, I say to
you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies,
it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it
produces much fruit (Jn 12:26). The grain of wheat must
give itself up to a kind of death in order to bear fruit.
Its dying is the principle and cause of new life. (Scalia,
P.).

3. As a professional and in your personal life, how does your

reflection about St. Pauls life and teachings bring you
closer to Christ, the Risen Lord? (1/2 to 1 page only,
double space)

As a registered nurse, St. Pauls life and teachings

help me realized how genuine he is. He gave me an impression

on how to be like him, because of his being a service to

people. As a nurse, giving care to our patients without

waiting for a return is vital. St. Paul teaches to always

help to those in need, small or big things, as long as I can

be of help. It maybe in terms of work but also we can be an

inspiration to others. I should be selfless first, I should

be sensitive to the need of other before me. St. Paul life

and teachings challenged me to renew and what should a real

Christian should be.

MODULE NO.4
St. Paul University Philippines
Tuguegarao City, Cagayan 3500

Question:

1. Research and discuss one model of decision-making which you

think is best for you.

There are three decision-making model; the

rational/classical, administrative or bounded rationality,
and retrospective decision-making model (Chand, S.) Rational
or classical decision-making model is multi-step process for
making choices between alternatives. It favors logic,
objectivity, and analysis over subjectivity and insight.
(Boundless) Administrative or bounded rationality is a
process wherein people tend to seek the best solution
because the decisions they confront typically demand greater
information, time, processing capabilities than they possess
(Boundless). Retrospective decision-making model focuses on
how decision-makers attempt to rationalize their choices
after they have been made and try to justify their
decisions. (Boundless)
I thought that the best decision-making model is the
rational or classical model because of the process or path
it follows. This path includes: Formulating a goal(s),
Identifying the criteria for making the decision,
Identifying alternatives. Performing analysis, and Making a
final decision. (Boundless). I often use this model in real
life because when I have problems to solve I usually
identify first the problem and the goal that I need to
achieve. Then after recognizing it, I formulate plans to
solve the problem, I do not usually articulate single
solution for a single problem, it is best if we have many
options on how to should the problem then I will choose
which of the solutions will be best to solve the problem. I
usually exclude those alternatives which will less benefit
or which is costlier.
Rational or classical model can also reduce the chances
of errors, assumptions, uncertainties, subjectivity and
distortions. It also reduces the risk of failure because the
selection process is based on logic information and
knowledge. However, this model also has some disadvantages.
The information for the problem is inadequate that may
St. Paul University Philippines
Tuguegarao City, Cagayan 3500

result in difficulty of evaluating the issue. It may result

to the use of experience to make a decision.

2. Discuss the stand of the Catholic Church regarding the

following issues: (Please acknowledge your references)

a. Abortion

As taught by the Catholic Church, thou shall not kill

which is the fifth commandment, abortion is always condemned
by the Catholic Church as a grave evil. In principle,
Catholic Christians believe that all life is sacred from
conception until natural death, and the taking of innocent
human life, whether born or unborn, is morally wrong. Given
the revelation of the Old and New Testaments, with special
emphasis on the mystery of the incarnation, the Roman
Catholic Church has condemned the practice of abortion.
Several examples of teaching which span the first three
hundred years of our Church include the following: The
"Didache" ("The Teachings of the Twelve Apostles," c. 80
A.D.) asserted, "You shall not procure abortion. You shall
not destroy the newborn child." The "Epistle of Barnabas"
(138) also condemned abortion. Athenagoras (177) in his "A
Plea on Behalf of Christians" (a defense against paganism)
emphasized that Christians consider as murderers those women
who take medicines to procure an abortion; he condemns the
killer of children, including those still living in their
mothers womb, "where they are already the object of the
care of divine providence. (Saunders, W.)

b. Euthanasia

Euthanasia is defined as an act of deliberately ending

a persons life to relieve suffering(NHS). According to
Evangelium Vitae (1995), Euthanasia is a grave violation of
the law of God, since it is deliberate and morally
unacceptable killing of human person. It is morally wrong
because it violates the teaching of the Catholic Church
St. Paul University Philippines
Tuguegarao City, Cagayan 3500

which is the absolute and unchanging value of the

commandment Thou shall not kill.

c. In-Vitro Fertilization

In vitro fertilization is a complex series of procedures

used to treat fertility or genetic problems and assist with
the conception of a child. During in vitro fertilization,
mature eggs are collected from your ovaries and fertilized
by sperm in a lab. Then the fertilized egg or eggs are
implanted in your uterus. (Mayoclinic). The Catholic Church
teaches that conception should occur within a womans body,
using the egg and the sperm from this wife and this husband.
Depending on the medical situation of a couple, eggs and/or
sperm can be extracted, undergo a process to improve chances
of conceiving and then be reintroduced into the womans body
where the conception occurs. A child is not
something owed to one, but is a gift. The supreme gift of
marriage is a human person. A child may not be considered a
piece of property, an idea to which an alleged right to a
child would lead. In this area, only the child possesses
genuine rights: the right to be the fruit of a specific act
of the conjugal love of parents, and the right to be
respected as a person from the moment of conception
(#2378, quoting Donum Vitae, II, 8). The Catechism concludes
its treatment of in vitro fertilization in these words: The
Gospel shows that physical sterility is not an absolute
evil. Spouses who still suffer from infertility after
exhausting legitimate medical procedures should unite
themselves with the Lords Cross, the source of all
spiritual fecundity. They can give expression to their
generosity by adopting abandoned children or performing
demanding services for others (#2379).

3. After reading Evangelium Vitae, as a Health Care Provider

what is now your personal stand regarding each of the 3
issues above (refer to item no.2)?
St. Paul University Philippines
Tuguegarao City, Cagayan 3500

As a Catholic, all these issues are immoral. For me,

abortion, euthanasia, and in vitro fertilization are not
right because it disobeys the teachings of the church.
Taking ones life such as in abortion and euthanasia is
wrong, because for me it is only God who can take it away.
We do not own this life; it is only He who decides what will
happen to our life. However, as a health care provider,
these issues faces ethical dilemma. For example, if the
mother is having an ectopic pregnancy, having the fetus
outside the uterus, and it may result to the loss of her
life. As a registered nurse, we were taught of the six
ethical principles which are the autonomy, beneficence, non-
maleficence, fidelity, justice, and veracity. It may be the
right of the patient to decide, but as a nurse we can teach
them and we can impart knowledge to them on helping to
decide. For me, it is battle between pro-life and pro-
choice.
