Learning Purpose/Rationale: The aim of this lesson is encourage the students to think critically about the
current policy and practice at their school.

Person and Social Capabilities-

The Personal and Social Capability curriculum aims to develop knowledge, understandings and skills to
enable students to:
- recognise, understand and evaluate the expression of emotions
- develop empathy for and understanding of others and recognise the importance of supporting
diversity for a cohesive community

Learning intention
Apply their understanding of the impact of homophobia and critically assess the current bullying and
harassment policy.
Success criteria
Students will know the current policies and procedure.
Students will be able to identify areas for improvement.

Formative assessment: informal group discussion and personal reflections on the lesson.

Procedural steps:

10 minutes Go through the #### bullying and harassment policy as a class.

20 minutes Students to highlight things they think are positive and benefit the school
and make notes of things they think are interesting, need improvement or
are new to them.

Discuss the safety survey that they recently completed.


Was it relevant to them? Why/why not?
10 minutes
Why do they think the school does the survey?
Do they think people take it seriously?

20 minutes Bring out the results from the survey, ask the students to make a
list/graph/chart/representation of trends and patterns that they found.
10 minutes
Ask each group to present some of their observations.

Split the class into 4 groups. 2 pro- looking at the positives of the survey
5 minutes things they would keep. 2 cons- things that need updating.

10 minutes Groups must plead their case within 2 minutes. 4 way debate.

10 minutes Pair activity- How could the policy be changed to include people that
might identify as homosexual or non-binary gender??

Extension activities: Students can share their reflection with a


friend or comment on elements from the lesson .

Learning space set-up: Chairs and tables set up so all students


can see the board/screen. U shape preferred if possible.

Teachers resources: Whiteboard markers, whiteboard. Computer, projector.

Catering for inclusion:


Cater for visual learners by using simple videos,
Students can work on their laptop or in their books.
Supporting students by running through the task as a class.

Students resources: computers, pens paper, computers internet.
