Outline:
Ask the class this question, Have anyone ever said anything hurtful to you?, and also asked,
Have you ever said anything hurtful to someone else?

Tell the class that intent and impact is very effective when it comes to talking about racism.
Introduce to the class that you will be teaching them about racism.
Explain how racism is the biggest issue that is still occurring today.
Discuss some of the moments of racial discrimination that happened throughout history.
o Slavery in the 1800s and how it ended in the 1860s. However, African Americans
struggled for rights throughout the years.
o The genocide of Jews by the German Nazis during World War II times.
It was widely believed that Adolf Hitler wanted to get rid of the Jews was
because he blamed them for all the evil in the world. This anti-Semitism belief
turned Hitlers hate toward Jews into an obsession.
o The beginning of the Civil Rights movement.
The movement began to end racial segregation.
Discussion of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr.
o The Chicano Movement.
Discuss about the Chicano Blowout, a student protest where Mexican students
left school to protest for their rights in school. They demanded more Bilingual
Education, for teachers and administration to end prejudiced towards Mexican-
American students, and more curriculum and textbooks that displays
Mexican/Mexican-American contributions to US History.
o Korematsu v. United States.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 by the Japanese, an
executive order was placed to apprehend Japanese Americans despite their
citizenship.
o The Muslim Ban
Despite President Trumps claims that 109 people were detained, it was
reported that 746 people were actually detained during the first weekend of the
travel ban.
Plessy lost the case, with the separate but Equal decision turned against him.
This also caused the strong mandated segregation laws everywhere in the
United States.
o Jim Crow Laws
Laws enforcing racial segregation in the Southern United States.
The phase Jim Crow came a song Jump Jim Crow (or Jump Jim Joes) that
was sung and danced in blackface by white performers.
These laws started in 1890 and were still enforced until 1965.
o Brown v. Board of Education
A 1954 Supreme Court Case against the Board of Education of Topeka to end
segregation in public schools
The court case helped overturned the Plessy v. Ferguson.
With a unanimous vote of 9-0, the decision stated that separate educational
facilities are inherently unequal.
This is a class activity. Display on the screen 3 different types of scenarios and asked the class if
any of those scenarios displays unfair treatment based on race.
Get class feedback on why they believed each scenario either displays unequal treatment or
why it doesnt display unequal treatment.
Tell the class that in cases of racism, you cant tell whether the situation is an act of prejudice as
each situation may play out differently. It easy to tell through words, not through actions, and
each person has their own views on the situation.
