This is the 50min experience design plan- The one I lead was a condensed version

Experience Design:
1. The students will discuss what they know about the Disney movie Moana and if they know what the movie is
about.
a. The students will talk about the main character and the culture she is a part of.
2. The students will talk about what it means to be Polynesian.
a. Ultimately the students will learn about the tradition of sailing in the Polynesian islands.
3. The students will discuss the meaning of the lyrics to the song We Know the Way also known as Opetaia
FoaI, specifically the chorus translated from the Polynesian language, Tokelauan.
[Hook 1: Chorus, Opetaia Foa'i]
[Translation from Tokelauan]
Aue, aue
Oh! Oh!
Nuku i mua
There is land up ahead
Te manulele e tataki e
A bird in flight to take us there
Aue, aue
Oh! Oh!
Te fenua te mlie
This beautiful land
Nae ko hakilia mo kaiga e
The place I was looking for, we will make our home

4. The students will listen to the music video from the movie so that they may begin envisioning the imagery
behind the song and hear it before the activity begins.
5. The students will read the words written on the board with the teacher that represent the pattern movements for
todays activity.
a. The students will do this while the teacher claps the amount to beats/counts for each pattern movement.
6. The students will then participate in Weikart's process for the activities while the song is playing.
a. Say, Say & Do, Whisper & Do, Think & Do
b. The students will repeat as necessary.
7. The students will listen to the songs chorus again, this time thinking about how they can create their own
movements to the words.
a. The teacher will also pull up the meaning to the words of the song again so that the students can refer to it.
b. The students will have approximately five minutes to do so while the teacher walks around to help anyone.
c. If the students have trouble coming up with ideas, the teacher and students can take a moment to brainstorm
some aspects of the song that the students can take into account when creating movements. (meaning, Dynamics,
tempo, feeling (minor/major) of the music, etc.)
8. After five minutes, a student to share with the class what his/her movement for the first section was.
a. The class will repeat after the student, doing the movement that he/she created.
b. The students will repeat this step until every original movement has a new name and movement.
9. The teacher will then write the new pattern names on the board and play the chorus of the song again to that the
students can now do the new movements.
10. The class will repeat as necessary.
If I needed to make this lesson longer, I would extend the lesson by then asking students to get into groups
and create movements to another section of the song.

Assessments
I can assess the students by observing their patterns created to the music.
I can also assess students by their participation in discussions about the topic.
