model columns and beams. Membrane elements are used to model regular slabs supported on walls /
beams. The non-regular slabs are modelled using shell elements. The RCC walls are modelled using
shell elements. Shear walls are meshed only for 1 st level at lowest floor with mesh size 1m x 1m
for better stress/strain handling in SAFE package used for foundation analysis/designs. The meshing of
shear walls for one level creates many nodes at base and hence the load distribution for the foundation
will not be concentrated at only ends of the walls and rather gets distributed evenly.

According to IS: 1893 part 1- 2002, the drift limit is 0.004 times the storey height under dynamic loads
and will be achieved. The lateral sway at the top for wind loads should not exceed H/500 where H is the
total height of the building. These values are adhered to.

Columns are designed using design module of ETABS software. The columns are designed for axial
force and bi-axial moments as per IS: 456-2000 using Limit State Method (LSM).
9.5 DESIGN OF STAIRS AND RAMPS
The stairs are not modelled in ETABS. The analysis and design of stairs are made using spread sheets or
hand calculations. However the load due to staircase is considered by modelling one way slab in ETABS.
