Yousef Gerson, Elliot (October 2, 2015 at 1:48 PM ‘The Aspen institute Stevens Initiative Partnership Details Te: otaiba7@hotmsicom, Ce: Ingber, Melissa, Al, Maysam Dear Ambassador Al Otaiba, ‘Thank you for your support for the Aspen Institute as we take on the role of managing director of the Stevens Initiative. The Institute is thrilled to be a part of this important multilateral public-private partnership to increase people-to-people educational exchanges between youth in the United States and the Middle East and North Africa. It was great to have Dr. Al Oraimi with us yesterday for what was an invaluable conversation on enhancing understanding between the US and the MENA region, Your ‘Embassy's participation was deeply appreciated by the Initiative’s council of advisors, including Anne Stevens, who shared. ‘with us your inspiring call to building virtual bridges, rather than none at all, between our societies. We are excited to share with you that we have officially opened the first round of the award competition for organizations to administer virtual exchanges. The Initiative may support in-person exchanges to complement participants’ virtual exchange experience. U.S. organizations are eligible to apply for awards during the first cycle ofthe competition, and organizations in other countries will be eligible o apply for awards during the next cycle in 2016. We will keep your Embassy informed and will work with your staff to ensure that organizations across the region are aware of our second cycle and encouraged to apply. [As we discussed, we have received intial funding from the United States Department of State and private funding from the Bezos Family Foundation. The Institute is ready to receive and manage additional funding to support the Initiative and we are now in the process of following up on commitments made by other interested governments and organizations. To facilitate this process, we have drafted a simple letter to establish te relationship between the UAE and the Institute to act as the steward of ‘your funds forthe Stevens Initiative. We prepared the attached document based on our understanding that the UAE pledged 6 ‘million US dollars over @ 3 year period to support the Initiative. We further understand that your pledge proposed a payment of 2 million in 2014 and another 2 million in 2015. Given thatthe State Department funding requires a 30 month eycle which began in August 2015, it would be ideal to receive the majority of your funding in 2015, if at all possible. If we have, in any ‘way, misunderstood your pledge for the Initiative, please let us know and we do apologize for any miscommunication. Likewise, if you have any questions on the letter or seek modifications, please let us know and we would be happy to discuss it further with your staf. Finally, given the importance of our initiative, we would like to visit the UAE Dec 6-10 and meet with government and educational partners to discuss the Stevens Initiative and inform our strategy on how this program can meet the priorities of ‘educators and students in the UAB. The UAE is an important partner in ths initiative and we look forward to working with you and organizations within your country to increase virtual and physical exchanges. We welcome the opportunity to discuss this ‘in more depth with your staff, and we would like to thank you, once again, for your generous commitment to the Stevens Initiative, All best, Elliot Gerson, Elliot october 2, 2015.1 RE: The Aspen institute Stevens Initiative Partnership To: Youset Al Otalba, Ce: Ingber, Melissa, Al, Maysam, Omar Al Shams ‘Wondertul, And it was great to have your cultural attaché there yesterday Just so you wil know, | wll bein Abu Dhabi for two reasons in Dacernber, tis, and also to meet wih Tamkeen regarding the ldeasLab (modeled ‘on the Aspen Ideas festival) we wil stage next October at NYUAD. ‘Aubest, Eliot ‘Sent by handheld device; apologies for ypos and autocorrect errors. =~ Original messag From: Youset Al Otaiba Dato: 1010/2015 4:54 PM (GMT-05:00) ‘To: "Gerson, Ell” (Co: "Ingber, Mois , "AK, Maysam” ‘Subject: RE: The Aspen Institute Stevens Intative Partnership Exot, “Thank you forthe update.
