THE MEANING OF BEING GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP

When we talk about Global Citizenship, half of us will have a question in their mind,
what is global citizenship, what the advantage for us, what we need to be part of global
citizenship, who can be part of global citizenship, etc. This question is a common question for
people who never heard it before. Now, I would like to answer that question.

First of all, what is global citizenship? A global citizen is someone who identifies with
being part of an emerging world community and whose actions contribute to building this
communitys values and practices. (Israel 2013). On the other side, according to Hannah Arendt
as famous philosopher from Germany say Global Citizenship is an ethic of care for the world.
So, Global citizenship can be defined as a moral and ethical disposition which can guide the
understanding of individuals or groups of local and global contexts, and remind them of their
relative responsibilities within various communities.

After we know about global citizenship, of course we still have a question in our mind
such as the advantage of global citizenship in our daily life? Why we should being part of global
citizen? Global citizenship is someone who have sense to be more aware of other cultures and
beliefs, more accepting the difference and diversity, so that we can live with less discrimination
and prejudice in the world (Nick 2010). As we can see from the advantage of global citizenship,
Global citizenship is taking the important things in our society, if we have a consideration as part
of global citizenship, we could get a great future where there is less discrimination and prejudice,
to aim this goal we should have a characteristic of global citizenship.

The characteristic for everyone who have spirit of global citizenship as offered by
Oxfam: he/she is aware of the wider world and has a sense of their own role as a world citizen,
respects and values diversity, has an understanding of how the world works, is outraged by social
injustice, participates in the community at a range of levels, from the local to the global, is
willing to act to make the world a more equitable and sustainable place, takes responsibility for
their actions (Ideas Forum 2013). Now all we can do to have that characteristic in our life is open
our heart to accept every diversity and difference , Lets being part of Global Citizenship!!
